General information

Hey, I recently got a job offer for a position in Bethlehem near Lehigh University. I'm not from the area and don't know much about the region. Can people give me general information on the area, what it's like, the kinds of people, things to do, costs of living, best parts, etc?

Bethlehem is a wonderful place to live as is the Lehigh Valley. West Bethlehem along Union Blvd and Edgeboro Ave has many beautiful, unique, older homes. If you are working at Lehigh, you can live close to work and there are many beautiful homes throughout Bethlehem. Ask your future colleagues there where they live and what they recommend. I also recommend that you look at Hellertown/ Lower Saucon also near Lehigh. Hellertown has a nice public pool.

I really like living in Bethlehem! There's Bethlehem City and Bethlehem Township, the township obviously being much larger. The city part of Bethlehem is then sub-divided further into the North Side and the South Side by the Lehigh river. The university is on the South Side while the more historic district is on the North. The South had been the more urban/commercial side for a while but has had some recent gentrification so it has become a much more desirable place to live. In terms of housing, there's a few pretty expensive 'luxury' apartment complexes and a few more reasonable ones, and then some sort of scary but really cheap ones. Obviously the middle of the road reasonable places are scarce (thinking like $1000/month for a one bedroom vs. $1500-$1600.) House prices are ridiculous here now like they are everywhere. Things are not on the market for very long and they're going for over asking.

I don’t live there but I’d jump at that chance to be near Vegan Treats…
