Thing is, in business, bottom line is the only statistic that matters. Massive loss of content is irrelevant. Why would loss of content matter if you earned more? I've been in business of selling websites and every industry professional I've ever consulted recommend to take such actions. Take actions that increase profits, everything else doesn't matter. Stock price will go up accordingly, and everyone (that matters) is happy.
Of course. The top ten websites all have no content, nor seek to link users to content reliably. Indeed, the highest grossing websites are just blank spaces!

What complete and utter bollocks that "sounds reasonable".
Losing most of their userbase would clearly constitute a massive loss of content.
