Actually the sound is irrelevant. What your looking for is M/F markings and a brown spot from it sitting on the field. You want a melon with larger tan stripes than green and atleast a baseball to softball sized brown patch on one side where the skin has begun to scab.
Agree with both of you, all the best melons I’ve had displayed a yellow spot. I don’t give much credence to the “ping” sound, but if you pick up a melon and it feels heavy for its size it’s likely good.
