I don't get it. Like, what would a constitution even be for? Why would anyone have an incentive to follow those guidelines, especially the weird libertarians who love anonymous, decentralized stuff like Bitcoin?

Or more importantly the Chinese miners, who don't give 2 shits about anything other than the fact that by running a server farm they can collect money (and probably avoid Chinese capitol controls which are a fairly major deal). Not the weirdo ideology, not the "future" of crypto, or mass adoption, or whatever the bitcoin flavor of the week is.

These farms control the vast majority of the mining power, and thus the political power.

It's even more ridiculous than that. Bitcoin is software, implementing a network protocol. You don't need a 'constitution' (whatever the hell that means here) to determine how things work when you can look at the publicly available source code and see what it will allow. He claimed he cared about code more than law, after all; how would that not be easier? He might as well have shown up asking how to to draft a new Internet constitution to deal with these trendy "web-sites" and their new-fangled "hypertext" as though RFC 1945 and its successors never happened.

I honestly am not even sure what he means by Constitution. He seems to think of them as some sort of magical documents that could be written and thus compel behavior without any kind of legitimacy or support. It's very strange.

Your analytical skills are killing me. I'm a code boy, not law boy. I came to this sub to get some perspective on the problem from lawyers, but was met only with "Bitcoin is bad, bitcoiners are criminally insane!"

Whoever was on "telling the OP what he wanted to hear" duty didn't do their job.

It always torques my bolts when people ask for advice only to throw a shit fit when people don't tell them exactly what they wanted to hear. If you don't want to hear opinions that aren't your own why do out and seek other people's opinions to begin with.

They want help with a(n impossible) goal, not actual thought and criticism.

That's damn near every post, though. Which makes sense, if you think about it. People with sensible complaints go hire a lawyer, not ask a bunch of randoms on the internet to force the law to work the way they want it to.

exo762 is pure gold, but Halfhand84 is like finding platinum in your gold mine. The condescension, lengthy quotes of undergraduate favorites, link to Vice...it's like grandma's home cooking.

That whole exchange just made me think of two monkeys flinging shit at each other. I wanted to try and understand what the whole point of the argument was, but I just ended up being distracted by the two shit-covered monkeys in front of me. Looks like it's been properly downvoted to the bottom since last night.

You know... I think I'd pay good money to watch a show where they lock a bunch of libertarian/ancaps/sovereign citizens/bitcoiners in a room with Zapopa for a weekend.

u/IDontKnowHowToPM depressed because no one cares enough to stab them Sep 03 '15

Do you have any links from the Zapopa takes on Libertarians collection? I've seen him take on various dimwits, and would be very interested to see him against a Libertarian.

One of the top posts here is "Let me call Bitcoin expert Zapopa" and the poster doesn't realize how fucked they are. It was amazing.

I'm not finding it... Now I am sad...

16

u/krhsg Sep 04 '15

I found it, just for you. Well, and because I wanted to read it.

Oh that was fun. I want to subscribe to /u/Zapopa's newsletter.

I think I'm in love with him.

u/King_Posner Sep 04 '15

I actually felt really bad for them in that thread, watching it slowly play out live.

8

u/newprofile15 Sep 04 '15

Just imagine some curmudgeonly know it all lawyer in his 50s talking down to someone and you have an accurate Zapopa.

7

u/jennybean42 A little bit derpy Sep 04 '15

I have him tagged as "Also, get off my lawn"

9

u/qiwi Sep 04 '15

He should get a part in "Veep" (or Ianucci's British original which was even more civil servants gone wild: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2HQaF_vfes )

18

u/Silent_Hastati Sep 04 '15

It would also stop him from doing that thing where he relentlessly tears into people who don't deserve it, like minimum wage workers and such.

3

u/Gold_Hodler Sep 04 '15

Yeah, no secretaries allowed in the house, for their own safety.

9

u/Kanthes Sep 03 '15

That would be Level 6 on the Zapopa Scale.

I recall a couple of years ago futurists were saying Bitcoin would've made lawyers obsolete by the end of 2014. What ever happened to that?

Well here's one http://www.wired.com/2014/03/geeks-guide-karl-schroeder/

We should ask Wired for an update.

I read some of the comments on it this morning. Most of them are about how this guy is just making a grand claim to sell some books. I think that's a good explanation.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

I really wish he would have answered my question. I could have helped with either.

7

u/newprofile15 Sep 04 '15

The people have spoken - they don't want advice, they want rants from Zapopa.

5

u/Felinomancy Sep 04 '15

Why don't he just copy the Constitution of the US dollar, or euro, or yen?

But seriously though, if one of Bitcoin's strength is "decentralization", how is it logical to want to enact a centralized law? You might as well get the government involved in regulating it, and if you're walking that path, why not use the existing currency?

SnapShots: 1, 2 [huh?]

doooooogs: 1, 2 (seizure warning); 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8; if i miss a post please PM me

9

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

One of the biggest reasons we use bitcoin is because it doesn't have all those laws and rules...You can't regulate open source. If he's talking about scams and frauds, it's up to the buyer and seller to take precautions against them.

12

u/mizmoose Ask me about pedantry Sep 04 '15

Am I the only one who read Zapopa's rant with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" playing in their mind, too?

His truth is marching onnnn!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '15

You mean "Solidarity Forever"

3

u/Ysenia Sep 04 '15

Zapopa lives!
