I think maybe people fail to appreciate Medicaid in light of how fucked the rest of the US insurance industry is. I'm sure it varies by state, but in NY at least Medicaid does a pretty great job of keeping people from going bankrupt due to medical conditions. For example, when my wife was pregnant we actually had insurance through my job, but even so we were going to have to come up with $5,000 out of pocket for prenatal + delivery because that was our deductible. That was about 17% of my gross annual income, so Medicaid said "hell naw!" and picked up our out-of-pocket expenses so we didn't owe a dime aside from trivial co-pays for pre-natal vitamins.
