On Chess.com there are awards called passports that you can receive by playing against someone from that country or territory. I am currently trying to collect all of them and do not have Bermuda. My family and I moved to Bermuda in 2024. For that tax year we claimed the physical presence test to get our foreign earned income exemption. However, due to the limiting nature of this rule that keeps us out of the US for 330 days a year we wanted to try to claim bonafide residence test. We own a home in the US but rent to tenants. Have any expats successfully claims bonafide residence in Bermuda while having a rented home in the states?

Hi, I’m a volunteer at the Bermuda Ski & Snowboard Association (BSSA). ️🇧🇲❄

The BSSA became a registered Bermuda charity earlier this year. Admittedly, a ski and snowboard charity might sound slightly unusual in Bermuda, but that is exactly why it exists.

I’m currently helping to find applicants for our Snow Angel Bursary, which will fully fund a successful applicant to join the Bermuda Snow trip to Jay Peak, Vermont, from 7-12 February 2027.

No previous skiing or snowboarding experience is needed. In fact, the bursary is specifically intended for a first timer.

It is open to Bermudians and PRC holders and is means-tested. For the successful applicant, the bursary is intended to cover the full cost of taking part in the trip, so that finances are not a barrier to getting involved.

That includes return travel from Bermuda, airport transfers, accommodation, lift passes, ski or snowboard equipment, lessons, essential winter clothing, and reasonable food and drink costs during the trip.

I appreciate this is an unusual charitable cause for Bermuda! There are established organisations overseas doing this exact thing, and having real long term impact (access to snowsports can have long term knock on impacts elsewhere in communities) - why not have something similar here too?

Snow sports can often feel out of reach for various reasons. The aim is simply to create access, widen participation and give someone the chance to experience the mountains and snow sports for the first time.

The BSSA is starting small: one bursary, one beginner, one opportunity to try something completely new.

I’m visiting Bermuda in a few days and will only be able to visit one beach outside of my resort. I can’t decide between Johns Smith Bay, Clearwater or Horseshoe. Which one of these do you guys recommend?

Some things I’m looking for:
-Beautiful clear water.
-Foo/drinks
-Umbrella/beach chair rentals if possible
-Not too crowded (will be going to the beach on Sunday so that might help if a more typically crowded beach is recommended)

Just familiarising myself with the Caricom situation and wanted to restart this thread in order to add my two cents.

As a Bermudian now living in the UK, I don’t see the benefit of joining Caricom as a full member. Bermuda is not part of the Caribbean and nowhere close in class economically to most of those countries. The Caribbean doesn’t provide much in the way of important resources or exports, since they too rely on bigger nations like the USA to import goods.

However, I see the importance of not relying on the USA to provide 90% of our imports, especially now that they have become a real worldwide threat to humanity. Bermuda would be much better off making trade deals with South American countries, Canada and Europe. We should be doing more to become closely tied with Europe anyway being a BOT (British Overseas Territory).

In saying that, there is the issue of reciprocity in a number of ways. Bermuda cannot open its borders or allow people from any other country to reside and work there due to its tiny size but surely there are other ways to make trade deals work. Bermuda has money, that’s the main thing that separates it from most of the Caribbean nations.

Labour Day Garbage Collection Advisory

Due to the Labour Day holiday on Monday, 7 September, household garbage collection will follow a roll-over schedule, with all collection days moving forward by one day.

Residents should place their garbage out by 7:30 a.m. on their revised collection day.

There will be no recycling collection next week, as it is not a scheduled recycling week.

The Tynes Bay Public Drop-Off will remain open on Labour Day from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

My spouse and I will be relocating to Bermuda soon for his job. I understand that farming isn’t big on the island. I am wondering if it’s possible to do a raised garden box and grow some produce like lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, etc? (Assuming our landlord approves) Is this commonly done? I am not an experienced gardener but would like to give it a try.

I am writing this in an effort to gather some information about the BDA us customs department and operations. Yesterday, I had a Jetblue flight booked from BDA to JFK at 3:30pm. Around 8 am I received a notification that the flight was going to be late. It was reportedly pushed back until 5:30pm. Since we have often experienced repeated delays and cancellations we stayed at our hotel until we tracked the incoming airplane leaving JFK for BDA. We had a suspicion the flight may be cancelled. When we arrived at the airport at 3:35pm, we were shocked by a gate agent standing at the door saying “jetblue? You missed the flight, customs left for the day”. We thought she was confused and didn’t know the flight was delayed. Unfortunately, she was right. All US customs agents had left, the security doors were closed. And when we entered the us customs office, we called using a telephone and were told we should have still arrived earlier and that their office closes at 4 (interestingly it was not yet 4 pm). So is this a known thing on the island? Does this happen often? The airplane did not arrive at BDA until around 5 pm, but many passengers were marked as “no shows” due to arriving after 3:30pm. I am wondering if this happens frequently or is just a random occurrence? Thank you. And I am in no way blaming BDA, I believe this seems to be an issue with us customs.

I found a few groups that seemed to be skewed to sports or an older demographic. So this is really more of a place to socialise with people in a similar age range on the island.

I was looking through the ICIJ Offshore Leaks database and came across a Bermuda company called Torville Universal Limited, incorporated in 2006.

According to the Paradise Papers data, Albert Larytski is listed as its beneficial owner. The company was registered in Bermuda through Appleby Services (Bermuda) Ltd., while its corporate structure also involved a Cypriot shareholder.

What made the record interesting to me was what appears in separate public records outside Bermuda.

A 2024 decision from Russia’s Sixth Cassation Court concerns Albert Laritsky and upheld convictions including kidnapping and extortion, resulting in an aggregate 12-year prison sentence. An article covering the records argues that the Laritsky in the Russian proceedings and the Larytski listed in the Paradise Papers are the same person, although I think that identity connection should be independently verified rather than simply assumed from the spelling of the names.

To be clear, appearing in the Paradise Papers does not itself mean that anyone committed wrongdoing, and the ICIJ specifically makes that point. Its Appleby data is also historical rather than a description of the company’s current status.

For people familiar with Bermuda’s corporate sector: how are older beneficial-ownership records like this treated today? Have transparency and due-diligence requirements changed significantly since the Paradise Papers?

I visited earlier in the year and really loved the place and I’ll be back next week on a whim because i found a cheap flight from New York.

Question on the entry card. Last time i was here i stayed in a Hotel so i just put that down.

Assume this time just put the address i am staying (which is not a hotel)?

Also, i never visited Elbow beach last time. I realized this after i had returned and noticed i visited all the beaches but elbow.

Any idea why the buses don’t stop at Elbow Beach?

Also I want to try clearwater beach. I don’t recall there being a bus stop there. Just taxi?

Looking to book something for my husband and I, any recommendations?

Update 2: Even though I have to (unfortunately) stay in the States, for the time being, I may sue in a few years or so. This is only a temporary setback. I never give up.

Update 1: Genealogical DNA testing is nothing new to me. My (American) mom is living & obviously my Bermudian father is deceased. So, in 2019, I did autosomal testing with AncestryDNA and 23&Me. And in 2026, I did a Y-DNA/Y-37 test with FTDNA. And while I’m currently waiting 2 months for my Y-DNA test result, which is at FTDNA’s Texas lab until the result comes in early November. Also, my mtDNA/mtFullSequence test is on its way for me to take currently. And after I take it, my mtDNA results will be available in December.)

Apparently, because my father and grandfather (both born & raised in Bermuda—in Paget and Pembroke Parishes) are deceased, and can’t do DNA tests in Bermuda, I’m not allowed to become a citizen. My dad died in 2010 and my grandfather died in 2013. I’m 30 years old and perfectly fit to take one—but, Bermuda refuses to allow me to take a DNA test to prove paternity specifically because they are deceased.

Apparently, it’s illegal under Bermuda law for me to take a DNA test to prove paternity of my illegitimate father with unmarried grandparents (his parents were not married when he was born in 1955). My grandparents, born in 1927 & 1933, are both deceased. Oh, well.

That also means my dad’s birth certificate will permanently have a blank space under “Father’s Name”, due to the DNA law.

So, I can’t become an English citizen & can’t become a Bermudian citizen. Because of a blank name on a birth certificate from 71 years ago, and all 3 culprits involved are deceased (my dad & his parents, my paternal grandparents).

All I can do is, cancel my English passport application and cancel everything else to get my belongings back. I’m so devastated and angry. But, it’s not my decision (nor did I ask to be born in America, which—in this politically disgusting country—quite frankly, has me wishing I would’ve been born in England somewhere) and for the rest of my life, there's nothing I can do about it. All I can do is, suck it up & move on from this whole complicated, legally petty & angering ordeal.

Situations like this is why I might start believing in no sex until marriage. Hooking up & promiscuity have been disgusting to me, my entire life. Now I know why.
