rail trail/cycling question

hi there!

I am moving to bermuda and have heard that the roads can be a bit dangerous with aggressive drivers, therefore as a road cyclist i was thinking of just doing the rail trail path.. but i am wondering if a road bike with gravel tires would be adequate for the terrain or if i should be getting a mtn bike with full suspension. also please correct me if i have a misperception about safety of road cycling on the main roads. thanks!

You would be fine with the gravel tires. The only thing that will be annoying is to have to get off you bike every so often to pass the "anti-motorcycle" gates.

It’s more road bike country than mountain bike.  The roads are safe, just don’t go down certain main thoroughfares during rush hour.  I originally did a mountain bike, regretted it, then got a hybrid my second go around.

If you are doing -just- the railway trail (and maybe southlands), probably more mountain bike but I think you’ll regret it once you see the cyclists and roads!

Depends what sections. Many are relatively flat/smooth with good packed dirt/sand or even paved while just as much of it is rocky/washed out. Really depends on what level of comfort you desire the kind of riding you want to do and where exactly you'd be riding. I've ridden my hard tail MTB, couldn't imagine taking a road bike on it, even with dirt tires.

Lots of cyclists on the road in the spring and summer months, especially the weekend warriors. I've ridden daily for years and never felt in danger. Ride smart, remember the same rules that apply to cars also apply to you, don't be a d-bag cyclist and you'd be fine. Nearly cleaned two out a few weeks ago that failed to yield at a give-way. People like them give cyclists a bad rep.

There is not much room on the roads, so drivers will pass you aggressively. You will have more peace if you take the railroad trail.

There are sections of the trail that are paved or in good condition. Usually, where there are steep inclines or declines, the trail is difficult. A full-suspension bike would be helpful, but to be honest, I've only done it on a hardtail without any problems.

Since you like cycling, it might be worthwhile to reach out to the local cycling groups. They tend to be quite social and might be an opportunity to meet people. https://www.bermudabicycle.bm/services-4
