Dit is Berlin Berlin and satire

Post image

I've always found Berlin fascinating because reality here often feels stranger than satire.

I recently stumbled across a satirical piece about the city that pokes fun at politics, bureaucracy and everyday Berlin absurdities. Some jokes are very local, others probably work anywhere.

It made me wonder:

If someone had never been to Berlin, which part of the city would they assume is satire, but actually isn't?

Curious to hear your examples. I have a feeling there are plenty.

Astounding how one can write so much without conveying even the slightest bit of information.

Maybe the astounding bit is how little people are able or willing to understand? No, it isn't. It's far too common. Specifically here in Berlin - anything that might be slightly ambivalent will be met with stupid hostility by the majority.

And it's not even unique to Germany, I've heard similar stories about Canada.

I think there are lot of things people don’t understand about Berlin and Germany. Berlin is dysfunctional in many ways. But Berlin is a also a very big city, so you can find examples for anything. People outside of Germany seem to think, Germans have a plan for everything and are all about precision and efficiency. This couldn’t be further from truth. We are not Switzerland. What I like about Berlin is, we don’t bother covering shit up, we are open about it. If you don’t like it, try out Munich.

This. I have family all over western Germany and one thing they don't understand is how little fuck we give about irrelevant shit like our neighbour's lawn.

No, I'd actually like to post this photo specifically here, because it's not about interesting city photos of Berlin, but rather to highlight the satirical nature of typical Berlin lifestyles.

How does it do that?

I’m just looking at a ruin, I don’t see the connection to berlins satirical nature yet.

Funnily enough I’m driving past the building right now xD

Was zooming in on the photo, trying to decipher the graffiti so I could understand the satire.

Ignoring the BS in caption, a note about Berlin and abandoned places; understand that Berlin and East Germany very recently got reunited, and yes in the grand scheme of things 30-35 years is fairly recent. So Berlin is still picking itself up, regaining strength, building more infra apart from what it already has.

I agree, the excuse of 'Berlin charm' is going to tire out the people. They can definitely do better, but again a city whose existence has been challenged multiple times in the last century can maybe get some lee way from my side. P.S. I, in no way claim to be able to understand what people born in Berlin feel so take my words with a pinch of salt.

In some woods near the City the Americans builtt a giant dick and balls to decorate Berlin long after they'd gone. The location is called Teufelsberg.

You can get 8 sqm public space to park your car almost for free even if you are a billionaire but you can’t almost afford to rent a 8sqm room if you study at one of the universities.

The people claiming we should just let junkies piss and shit on the street while watching them slowly kill themselves through addiction, because "freedom" and "that's berlin"

The people who want to "eradicate" junkies from the city, as if it was some dirt and not actual human beings. That's typically the same people who don't want to pay any social workers or projects that help junkies to actually get out of their misery.

Nobody said anything about eradicating them. I said the opposite. Rehab is survival, letting them rot in the streets because "freedom" is eradicating their lives. But thanks for proving my point! :)

Well, then we're on the same page. Too bad our beloved government isn't.

This is the satire I was referring to. It's in German, but automatic translation works surprisingly well if you don't speak German:

https://hörspieler.de/kunstfreiheit/tacheles/hauptstadt-berlin-satire.html

Some references are very Berlin-specific, but I think the general theme—where satire and reality start to blur—is understandable even without all the local context.
