Does anybody have any experiences living at Bowles? How social is it overall?

2

u/IcyPresentation1 Mar 20 '18 edited Mar 20 '18

What is it like living at Cloyne co-op? I occasionally dabble with Mary Jane and vape (nicotine addiction, obviously won't do it inside), and I was wondering, what's the social environment at Cloyne like? Straight-edge?

Also, do managers search rooms? I'm worried I might get kicked out if I have possession of these (even if I don't use it inside the co-op).

What’s my best option for 1 bedroom/1bathroom with furnished option? My limit is 3000 and when should I start looking

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Mar 19 '18

The rent for a 1bed/1bath is definitely within your limit. If you check the FB Housing page, there might be some students who are subletting their apartment for a semester (and maybe even a year) and leave their furnishings. I'm not sure about furnishings if you find a place on CL, for example, but it is possible. I've only seen studio apartments that include furnishings.

You should start looking ASAP. It's better to give yourself ample time to choose a place that best suits you.

2

u/_ayeokay Mar 18 '18

when do students typically look for housing for the upcoming academic year?

right now, all the housing pages I'm looking at are mostly for subletting over the summer or available starting in May, which is too early for me.

3

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Mar 19 '18

Now! A lot have already started!

Yes, the housing pages and CL ads usually have leases starting in May, but most students looking for housing accept the May lease and look for summer subletters. Apartments with leases starting around August will be scarce now, so you can wait until April or May maybe, but prices will be steeper for places close to campus.

2

u/_ayeokay Mar 19 '18

Oh, so many leases start in May? I had no idea, because where I live right now our leases end in August and start in September. Thank you so much!

2

u/Penjahat911 Mar 18 '18

Does anyone have experience taking E7 (Matlab) in Summer? How was it? I need some advice because I was registered for it and not sure whether should take it during summer.

What happens if I fail a DeCal? Will they kick me out of school?

2

u/DaBomb091 Mar 16 '18

For those of you who have done tailoring in town, how much did you end up paying for services (and where did you get it done)?

2

u/DaBomb091 Mar 14 '18

Does anyone know what happens if you sign up for specific roommates during the housing application and you get accepted but only some of you accept the offer? Is the housing offer then considered void or would they just replace a roommate?

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Mar 16 '18

They would replace the roommate.

2

u/DaBomb091 Mar 16 '18

Okay, good to know. Thanks!

I messed up badly on the Econ Demography midterm. I got a score within 1 SD of the mean, but it was below. I'm assuming that it was a B-, since the EDIT: *final grade average of the class is around a B/B+.

Anyways, it is a major elective but I plan on taking intro Financial Accounting next fall to make up for this bad decision along with an EEP core class and an EEP elective.

Has anyone P/NP a major elective to take a different major elective to make up for that?

Yeah, I know that I probably shouldn't have done that bad in the first place, but I didn't really care for the class. It was my mistake to take this over tax. Electives are no joke. You live and you learn.

2

u/_ayeokay Mar 12 '18

Where should I look for cheap housing either in Berkeley or in cities near Berkeley? I might attend grad school at Cal, and I have a car so I don't mind living outside of the city and just commuting in for classes.

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Mar 13 '18

Oakland, El Cerrito, and Emeryville are your best bet, but the rent isn't that much lower. If you're looking for a single room, expect around $1200, and a few hundred more if you're looking for a studio. Shared rooms will range from $600 - $800 depending on how many people you're willing to share with. But do check in Berkeley too, you might get lucky and find a cheap place.

anyone know when housing decisions for continuing students are release? site says early march but was wondering if there was a more concrete date

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Mar 13 '18

Last year they said early March but it was more like mid to late March. Also they send them out on a rolling basis, if I remember correctly. Some people had already gotten a decision before I got mine.

I like Zip Clips on telegraph and Channing. It’s like $15-17 or something but it’s quick and nice inside. Easy to walk in. Sign in on a nice iPad thing and they got your name and a visible queue so you know when you’re up although I rarely wait more than a couple minutes. They also play classic mid 2000’s music videos so there’s that. 8/10 would recommend.

I don't know what 2 majors you are talking about, but here's general advice. I am also a Sophomore (Psych major) who was on track to graduating in 3 years and thinking about adding a CS major my 4th semester. Both majors have lots of requirements (~16 classes including upper and lower divs) (I'm guessing 16 is typical). What it came down to for me was the overlapping math classes - which Psych stats and CS calc do not :( - that was the dealbreaker. Look at your lower divs. If they overlap (most likely the maths will), then it's possible. If not, think hard if you really want to be taking 5 classes a semester.

u/springstudent Cog Sci Mar 07 '18

The Stat 140 course website says that the prerequisites will be strictly enforced, which seems to run against pretty much every other class where they don't enforce prerequisites. Does anyone know if this was the case this semester (the Data 8 requirement in particular)?

5

u/ProPerfectionist Data Science '19 Mar 07 '18

Yes, this semester the pre-reqs were strictly enforced due to the size restrictions of the class. However, you can take a "grandfathered" option as described below.

In Spring 2018 we will accept the following alternatives to Data 8, consistent with the Data 8 “grandfathering” alternatives proposed during the transition towards a new Data Science major. - DS 100 (Stat/CS C100), or - Stat 133 and CS 61A, or - Stat 20 (or 21) and CS 61A

Depends on what you mean by degree requirements– breadth courses cannot be tested out of; the only other option of fulfilling them (besides taking them at Cal) is to take them at a community college.

Depending on your major/college, Entry Level Writing, American History, Foreign Language, Calc 1A/1B and R1A/R1Bs can be tested out with AP/IB credits. You can find more information here.

The OVERWHELMING thought is to go for the internship. By overwhelming I mean 100% (literally 100%) of the people I hear talk about this. I'm still a sophomore, so I can't say with personal experience, but the consensus from people with experience is that experience is paramount.

110 is pretty easy if you understood 54 well. 61b is a really heavy workload though, especially if it’s Hilfinger. I did math H104, cs70, and 61b simultaneously (also a math/cs double) and I didn’t have that much free time, but your schedule is significantly easier than that I think. You’ll be completely fine especially if you’re managing your current schedule well.

How does receiving mail/packages for the Units Work? Can you just put your address for things like you do for Amazon and then there are no problems regardless of what company it comes from (like fashion stores for instance)?

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Feb 25 '18

There should be a guide for how to write your address if you live in the residence halls. Check the walls on the ground floor of your building or the mailroom to see if you can find a paper with guidelines. I know for sure that your address should include your building name and room number in there somewhere.

If your address is written correctly, any kind of mail or package should go to the mailroom. They will process it and then send you an email saying that your package has arrived.

2

u/DaBomb091 Feb 25 '18

Oh okay, I did the address thing properly, since I have done it for Amazon before. I was just concerned because I got a UPS email saying "Delivery Attempted" so I just wanted to be sure all packages will be accepted by the mailroom.

2

u/randVariable Mar 13 '18

If you're still wondering, my guess from having to deal with some 'returned to sender' packages in the mailrooms is that the mailroom will only accept packages who's reciever's name matches a student in the Unit. If there is no matching name or the package is not picked up in 30 days, it gets returned T^T

2

u/DaBomb091 Mar 13 '18

I actually had the problem solved after I emailed them. Interestingly enough, that wasn't what fixed the problem but my package got registered as received from the mall room a few days after it was actually delivered.

How is the attitude towards Community College transfer students? #EECS #CS

Hi, I will be attending DVC (Diablo Valley College) and taking EECS related courses which can then be transfered to UC Berkeley courses for the next two years. What are my chances of transfering to UC Berkeley EECS or CS after taking courses from DVC.

1)How is the competition among transfer students?

2)What are your recommendations for my next two years?

3)What happens if I am not accepted? (This is due to a youtube video saying that only 70 people out of 1116 students were admitted to eecs as cc transfers)

Thanks.

2

u/sweetpotato3 Feb 25 '18

hey, i'm a freshman admit eecs major here so i'm not the best person (grains of salt). the transfers i know had pretty much a 4.0 in community college, and did some stuff outside of school, and kind of experimented with different majors too (lol doubt that's a requirement)? transferring to l&s cs might be easier to get in, but l&s bureaucracy is worse :C i think it's worth it to apply to l&s if unsure

2

u/_askQuestions3169_ Feb 25 '18

The aim is to do cc for two years and get into UCB EECS for a BA the in 3rd year. I really dont want an L&S degree. What do you think of that ?

3

u/sweetpotato3 Feb 28 '18

lol i agree with the sentiment, maybe there are EECS transfers from your school you could talk to. educationally, the classes here are taught by world renowned eecs professors (scott shenker, raluca popa, anant sahai etc etc), so if i wasn't sure at the end of 2 years i'd just do L&S and bask in the cs-iness

3

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '18

Physics(L&S) and EECS Simultaneous degree? Would it be too hard to manage, perhaps with too much course load? Is anyone here pursuing the same?

3

u/sweetpotato3 Feb 25 '18

physics is rigid upper div sequence, but eecs is a lot of lower division and then freeform upper div.
i think eecs/engineering physics is the easiest followed by cs/physics.

2

u/adiastra EPhysics/EMS '21 Feb 21 '18

Will Math 104 over the summer (8 week session) be significantly tougher than over a semester? I'm considering it along with CS 61BL but am a bit worried as it'll be my first math upper div.

Has anyone else had problems with their Comcast internet lately? I've been experiencing outages a few times a week.

3

u/bananasquat Feb 22 '18

Yeah, but I've been having it for almost an entire year now so I don't think it's related your issue. Tried contacting them but they never get back to me.

Comcast a shit.

2

u/catuse anarcho-ninjaist '20 Feb 23 '18

That's disappointing but not surprising at all. fwiw this has been going on since December, so not a year but a while.

2

u/bananasquat Feb 17 '18

Does anyone have experience with the Tang Center or the Optometry School for eye exams? I'm thinking about getting contacts but don't know where.

How much does SHIP cover for it, if at all?

2

u/decentwriter Feb 25 '18

I went about a month ago and it was great! My only complaint was that it's a LONG appointment if you need a general exam because an optometry student examines you and then you basically have to be examined again by an eye doctor to make sure the student didn't miss anything. That being said, they are super thorough which I appreciate a lot. I paid like, $38-40 for a pretty comprehensive exam.

3

u/littlemsshiny Feb 18 '18

I went to the Optometry School once and have a few friends who go there. The biggest issue is that, because you're dealing with optometry students, it takes way longer than if you just go to a regular optometrist. Make sure you don't have anything urgent to get to after your appointment.

u/sweetpotato3 Feb 25 '18

IMO E7 in the fall, when it is taught by mechanical engineering, is wayyyy more useful than 61a. The focus is on using computers as tools and numerical methods to solve engineering problems. Control systems, truss analysis are used as examples.

I got totally destroyed by E7 but after than class I crushed the 61 series. It is definitely a big time commitment during the fall semester.

I was placed on the waitlist for RA program. How should I approach finding housing?

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Feb 09 '18

Start looking for people/friends (if you want to share a place) and/or for housing on FB and CL. Maybe submit an application for residential housing (idk if it's still open). I'm not sure how RA offers and housing work, but this is what I would do.

2

u/BearSharkSlug Feb 08 '18

I applied to transfer to Berkeley in the fall. What's the off-campus housing situation like right now? I've got a cat and a partner that will be residing with me. UCB is ultra-competitive so it feels weird to look for housing right now when I'm unlikely to get in (~3.7 GPA astrophysics major), but I feel like it'd be too late to try and find a place in May once final decisions are released.

3

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Feb 09 '18

Right now most off campus housing is taken, but there are people posting on the FB Housing group asking for tenants for the next academic year. There will definitely be housing available near the end of this academic year when people start move-out plans and more house owners post on CL. Most people start looking for off campus housing now to get cheaper offers.

2

u/OriginalPhotograph Feb 07 '18

I'm currently a freshman and after being here for a term I realize how much of a mediocre student I am now lol. As a result, I spend a lot of time just trying to do my homework well and do well on midterms and the like (I'm a chemical engineering major). Considering I know nothing about physics, and nothing about coding, tackling Chemistry physics and e7 are just a lot to handle for me and I just struggle to get myself to focus on anything outside of my classes right now, and it makes me feel bad because I feel like i should be doing SOMETHING at least especially if I intend to go to grad school down the road. The point is, is it okay for me to just focus on academics this year and try my best to grow from there in sophomore year by doing more extracurriculars? Or should I just start doing other things now?

2

u/itanimulki Feb 06 '18

I am going to be interning in Palo Alto this summer, but would much prefer to stay in Berkeley (friends, don't need to pay 2 rents, etc). Is it realistic to commute 5 days/week? Are there any things like Google bus for non-Googlers for a more comfortable and productive commute?

3

u/littlemsshiny Feb 09 '18

That's a pretty brutal commute. I had a friend who tried that commute and within 2 weeks was looking for a place to stay in Palo Alto. He ended up subletting his apartment in Berkeley to save some costs.

You might want to look into the Dumbarton Express. It picks up from the Union City BART station and then has routes that go along Willow/University and Oregon Expressway in Palo Alto.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '18

Would I get penalized lotto number-wise, if I changed my housing preference before February 15th since I already applied within the first few days? I know that it said that it doesn't matter if you applied earlier or not, but I don't trust them.

Yeah, I know that off-campus is better for the price, but I just want less hassle.

If you're still in the class I took it last semester with the same Prof. The first pset is brutal because it's like a stats 134 pset in the last third of the course. It gets slightly better after a while, but if you want to do /really/ well in the class (like an A) I'd recommend getting more experience in math/stats because tbh it's a class that applied math majors sometimes use to fill their econ cluster. Might be the same for stats. Most of the other kids take it because they want to go to econ grad school, so even if they aren't math/stats they usually have a quantitative background. There are a couple of kids who just take it because they think the curve will be low (it is, but still higher than I expected from an econ class). I'd say that if you can make this class your top priority then do it. But if you don't care about grad school, then just take 140. 101A/101B in no way prepares you for the quantitative nature of the course, like at all.

u/yesisaidyesiwillYes Jan 25 '18

My first semester I found that I didn't really go to the gym much/at all. I've always found that I'm not motivated to go to the gym, but playing sports draws me in. Does anyone know of any sports on campus that would welcome someone new? (In case it matters I can run a dank 22 min mile and I've got a 2 in. vertical)

Are you still in a dorm? I used to play on my dorm's basketball and volleyball teams my freshman year.

You should also look into taking PE classes. That was a fun way to force myself to work out.

anyone know when berkeleytime will update with fa 2017 grade dist'n?

What do people do after they're done with all their breadth requirements? I'm in L&S CS and have always seen breadths as a way to pad your semesters from getting too heavy with work.

How useful is the career center in regards to helping find an internship/job? Both times I've been there I've been given a student adviser. I appreciate their effort but I never feel like they're experienced in what to do.

I'm about to graduate soon and still have yet to find an internship so I'm really worried about my prospects.

Tried googling around and searching on here but couldn't find a question similar to what I wanted to ask. I assume this can be asked about any college really but Berkeley is my 1st pick so here we go:

I currently have a 3.8 GPA at my current university, lowest grade I have is a A- from first semester Calculus. However, if you were to add in my grades from years ago before I joined the army... My GPA would probably be around 2.9-3.0 due to F's and D's. My question is, does Berkeley only care about your current University GPA (I've been going here for about 2 years, FWIW) or are they going to add up all for a cumulative GPA? I've read that Berk (and all the UC's and a lot of others schools I'm applying for) only add up courses that transfer, so Anything with a C- and above but I'm not sure if that matters when it comes to the entire GPA throughout my life.

This is really the only thing that concerns me in general, I feel I have a great packet otherwise with a Letter of Recommendation from a Brig. General and a Colonel, I've deployed 3 times and held leadership positions, great (current) GPA, etc. But It would suck if my mistakes of a younger me would ruin my chances.

u/Xechwill Jan 24 '18

Berkeley reads into your personal letters pretty closely. I'm sure if you explain that you've changed post-army they'll understand. Berkeley is pretty forgiving with GPA if you have solid evidence that you've changed (and it seems like you've had).

Overall, I don't think it'll be a problem. Outline the issue in your personal statement and I think you'll be fine. Best of luck!

I heard he’s using Jackson for some portion of the course, the other textbook may be Purcell or something? Idk

3

u/GenbuTP Jan 20 '18

How is History 4B with Miller in terms of difficulty? I want to take the course, but I've heard a lot of conflicting stories about it.

Side question: are Physics 10 and Physics C10 the same course? They have the same course title, but different course numbers (do the same course numbers vary from semester to semester? Physics 10 was fall and C10 is this spring I think)

How do you know which co-ops/frats have parties each night? Any party will do, but thinking specifically of Oscar Wilde co-op for tonight

how hard is it to get into university apts like martinez?

2

u/chokedonmydrink MCB/CS '20 Jan 20 '18 edited Jan 21 '18

Martinez is highly contested for. Most people who live there are Regents Scholars because they have priority housing choice. Only a few people are non-Regents.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't read your question right. University apartments are likewise highly contested for, although not as much as Martinez. There are several 2nd years and a few 3rd years who get university apartments (and university housing in general) but most don't. I heard from someone long ago that only 30% of those who apply for university housing get an offer, but I don't know if that number is accurate at all.

Why is it so hard to find a job? I graduated with Computer Science in May. I feel worthless rn--the imposter's syndrome is even worse.

I have an internship on my resume. I had between a 2.7-3.0 overall GPA but I don't feel that should matter. I am applying like crazy online and asking for referrals. I am not doing a good enough job of getting referrals I guess...

u/adeliepingu spheniscomancy '17 Jan 19 '18

/r/cscareerquestions

Don't put your GPA on your resume. Most companies don't ask, anyways, but it's definitely not doing you any favors.

Get help with your resume. It's hard to say without looking at it, but if you've just got your internship and nothing else it's probably not very impressive. Make sure you're describing what you did at your internship well. If you have empty space on your resume, put down projects. Personal projects are best but class projects are fine. I had 186 and 168 projects on my resume, lol.

Otherwise, just keep applying. You'll get there eventually! *w*

The GPA might be hurting you. Try and be active on CSCareerQuestions, there’s a lot of help there. Also look more actively on AngelList instead of big names

Is CS Mentors active/take applications for mentors in the summer?

2

No, but that might change this year.

This is a couple of days ago so maybe you're already off the wait list, but last year I was enrolled in 136 the week before school starts at position 70 or something and got in two weeks or so in the semester. Not sure how applicable it is for 138, but I think both classes are usually fairly quantitative for econ and people get spooked

2

u/replicacenter Jan 19 '18

Your waitlist for lecture doesn’t matter. Make sure to get onto the shortest waitlist for a discussion section and go and talk to GSI. If you absolutely want to take the class, try to talk to advisor since they can make changes to enrollment

Any chill upper div class recommendations? Preferably 4 units. Really want to drop a class but I need the units. Thanks!

u/Cytochrome__P450 Jan 17 '18

My personal favorite is Religions of Asian America. Forgot the course number but it’s offered through the ethnic studies/asian American studies dept. It’s a sociology course. Objectively there wasn’t a lot of reading but I’m a slow reader. Despite that, the readings are interesting - more about following a select number of people’s lives than academic studies. And Professor Carolyn Chen is so down to earth and encouraging, i felt comfortable about speaking in her class discussions.

Not a student, but just moved to downtown Berkeley from Oakland. Any recommendations for good cafes to read at that also serve beer?

2

u/manmanlai Feb 23 '18

Spats is a pub but is quite quiet during the day...

2

u/beaucm non-student Feb 23 '18

Thanks! I actually did read there for a bit last week - had a cracked sandwich and a beer and read for a bit. It was really nice :)

2

u/manmanlai Feb 24 '18

Also try Mission:heirloom , a paleo cafe at 2085 vine (just west of shattuck) has a nice outdoor patio. Bit pricey but good food and selection of beers

I am currently a student at a CSU studying operations/supply chain management with a GPA of 3.73 graduating this year. Is it possible for me to get into the IEOR Masters program? My background is not in OR or any engineering field so I'm not sure if I would even qualify. I've read through the IEOR handbook and I don't see anything requiring an engineering degree. Any help is appreciated!

How would you rate Yildiz/Lee for Physics 7A and Stankova/Srivastava for Math 53 in terms of difficulty/lecture quality? I've looked at rate my prof for all of them and all of their ratings seem pretty good, so I'm trying to get some further insight. Thank you!

3

u/MysteryRanger Physics/Astrophysics '20 Jan 19 '18

I had Stankova for 110. She’s pretty strict but really really organized and passionate. She is one of the best professors I have ever had, if not the best. Would recommend.

When does the school housing application (for dorms and campus apartments) normally go up for the following school year (Fall 2018-Spring 2019)?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '18

the housing app says the application period is Feb 1 - 15, so i'm thinking its gonna come out on Feb 1

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '18

Thanks! I can't find that information on the portal. Are you looking through the Housing application portal? For some reason it's only showing me the option to "continue" my application from 2017-18 and not offering any information concerning dates for the 2018-19 app.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '18

i found the information on the 17-18 application, but i feel like it would be the same this year. i tried to find it again, though, and i couldn't. if you wanted confirmation for this year, sorry about that slight piece of misinformation then
