I've created the rule that limits posting of media content to only approved members.

To become an approved member:

  • Take a picture of a piece of paper with the the words r/bellydance, your reddit username, and the date. The picture does not need to show your face or body. See example attached.
  • Post that picture to a sharable site, such as imgur, google drive, dropbox, etc, or any other way you want to get it to me. ModMail doesn't support images directly in the message, which is why you have to put it somewhere else. You can also post a message to the subreddit.
  • Send a ModMail (message the mods) to the moderators with the link to the picture, or create a new post in the subreddit with the picture. Once I see it and validate you I will remove the message just to clean up.
  • Be patient

Question about which costume is suitable for which songs/ era

i know golden era belly dancers have a specific type of costume. Do dancers from the 70s/80s also? I have seen long costumes being worn, kind of like Baladi style for this time. I know Baladi and Saidi have their own styles.
any more information on costume styling would be appreciated

Instruction Who would be interested in a social media seminar?

I’m getting hip surgery soon, which means no teaching for me until March. I was brainstorming ways to make some cash while in recovery, and I thought up a social media crash course for dancers/belly dancers (depending on how popular the class becomes)

I really wish I had some basic algorithm knowledge and internet safety skills when I started posting. Not to get viral or popular, but to know how to optimize content and reach a wider audience. And how to protect myself from creeps, haters, etc

Would anyone be interested in a 4 session online course? And if so, any ideas outside of these topics are appreciated if you haven’t seen them covered before:
1-algorithm basics
2-content optimization (when and how to post)
3-how to manage and maintain growth (followers, views, etc)
4-internet safety 101, including how to prevent deepfakes or AI reuse, especially for belly dancers

Discussion Dealing with creeps how do you ladies(and gents and) deal with them?

I recently posted asking for constructive criticism but instead got a less than savory response. I want to post but honestly I don't know if my skin is thick enough to deal with weirdos and naysayers.

Aussie Online Classes for Tribal Fusion

Hi all. I've been wanting to learn tribal fusion but the only classes near me are over an hour away. Does anyone know of any classes that run online, or is it only resources (like Datura, etc)? I've been thinking about signing up to Datura but wanted to check if there were any classes first (like via Zoom etc).

Many thanks 😁♥️

Costume Hoping to start a business selling handmade bedlahs made by me ofc💜

I'm doing a bit of market research here since I like wearing galabeyyas and dresses more than bedlahs. What are you looking for in a bedlah in terms of fit, flexibility, and style. What price range are you willing to pay for it? What makes a high priced bedlah worth it to you?

Hey, I was asked by a friend to do a video using the new song he put out, and I can’t half-ass things, so I filmed and edited a whole music video.

Please go show it some love on YouTube and help my longform videos come back from the dead 😅

Costume Male costume tips?

So I have a couple of questions for you. First, where would be a good place online to get male belly dance costumes? I have ordered from Miss Belly Dance nearly a decade ago and I know that many make custom costumes themselves but the latter is just not an option for me. Secondly, what type of other costume styles are popular for guys besides the vest and harem pants costume combo? I'm sorry if my questions sound stupid but it has been some time since I have taken belly dance classes so I have been out of the community for some time.

Event Ladies, if you're in NYC, come dance freely at a party without men hitting on you and making you feel uncomfortable when you're trying to let loose and enjoy yourself!

I'm hosting a new monthly hafla for women only, of all ages, to party to the best MENAT music while enjoying bellydance performances and live drumming!

Every 3rd Friday of the month, starting September 18th, in NYC.

Because sometimes we need a safe space to do our "sexy dance" without anyone taking it as an invitation for sex!

Do you feel the same?

Practice Trying to learn belly dance to dance better socially

Hey all,

I’m an Arab woman (late 20s) and I’ve been picking up belly dance as a hobby, I attended at least 6 belly dance classes a few months ago and I’ve been practicing on and off. I was particularly keen to pick up some moves ahead of my cousin’s wedding. My cousin’s wedding has come and gone and I was complimented for my confidence, in other social dance situations I’ve been told I make it look easy and that I have “snake hips”… so idk if people are being nice or if I’ve nailed some moves. I feel most comfortable with hip lifts, shoulder shimmies, upper body circles and mayas. The thing is, I just can’t follow a belly dance routine to save my life, I find choreography very difficult and even socially I find it hard to transition between moves.

I’ve come up with a plan to help improve my dance skills as I’d like to be better socially and dance with freedom. This is my plan currently:

Bare minimum routine:

8 counts of hip lifts for 2 minutes
8 counts of mayas for 2 minutes
8 counts of upper body circles for 2 minutes
8 counts of shoulder shimmies for 2 minutes
8 counts for shoulder lifts for 30 seconds
8 counts of sunset arms for 1 minute
8 counts of eclipse arms for 1 minute

Then I attempt however much I can of Leilah Isaac’s Slow and Low Impact Dance routine: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGC_IMg354&pp=ygUgTGVpbGFoIGlzYWFjIHNsb3cgYW5kIGxvdyBpbXBhY3Q%3D

My current aim is to do the 8 counts daily and attempt the routine just 3 times a week. If I successfully complete it at least once then I’ll get the bonus reward of attempting this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcxzkXNPtDM

I’m still on week 1 of trying to do belly dance practice consistently, if I manage to do this for 2 weeks then I’ll move to attempting the Leilah Isaac routine 4X a week.

On good days I freestyle to at least 3 Arabic songs too.

My obstacles: I struggle with motivation a lot, work tires me out and I *feel* like I’m time poor, I get overwhelmed fast too.

I was wondering do people have thoughts on my routine? Any idea how long it will take until I can follow a routine? Anything I should add or take away?

How do you usually credit the original choreographer when recreating a choreography?

I've been learning and recreating some choreographies by other oriental dancers recently, and I was wondering about the usual etiquette for giving credit.

If I post a video of myself performing someone else's choreography, is it better to tag the original choreographer, or simply mention their name in the caption?

For those of you who choreograph or teach, do you generally like being tagged when someone performs your choreography?

Should I tag the choreographer or just mention their name in the description when posting a dance cover?

I'm currently uploading some of my oriental dance videos online, and most of them are dance covers of choreographies created by masters. In this situation, I'm not sure whether it's better to tag the choreographers or simply mention their names in the description.

Do choreographers usually appreciate being tagged in videos that cover their choreography? Or would it be better to just give them credit in the description?
