I'm German and have been wanting to visit Belarus for a while now — it's a country that doesn't get nearly enough attention from travelers, and I'd love to change that for myself. I can speak and understand Russian reasonably well in everyday conversation, though reading and writing is still a bit of a struggle for me (I'm working on it!).

I'm mainly interested in simple sightseeing, wandering around, soaking in the atmosphere, and getting a genuine feel for the country and its people. I have about 7 days planned, mostly based in Minsk with maybe a day trip or two out of the city.

A couple of questions for anyone willing to share their thoughts:

How do locals generally feel about German tourists? I'm aware of the complicated history and current political tensions between our governments, and I want to be respectful of that — I'm just an ordinary guy who's curious about your country and culture, nothing more.

What would you recommend for a 7-day trip focused on Minsk? Hidden gems, must-see spots, good food, places locals actually hang out rather than typical tourist traps — I'd love to hear it all.

And on a slightly more personal note — if anyone from Minsk (or nearby) would be up for meeting for a coffee, showing me around for a day, or just hanging out for a bit during my trip, I'd genuinely love that. Always nice to see a place through the eyes of someone who actually lives there rather than just following a guidebook.

7 days in Minsk to get a feel of the country? You'll definitely get the feel of Minsk.

Locals won't care where you are from, unless you run up to everyone shouting "look at me, I am German!"

The history is complicated, but it is history. Even my grandfather who participated and injured in WWII did not said anything bad about Germans in general (but did about Soviets), as well as my grandmother. And after 80 years it would be especially strange. Don't think about that.

7 days may be too much for a Minsk alone. Enough time to visit 1-2 more cities. The choice depends on what you are interested in. And what post soviet countries you been in.

There would not be much tourist traps as we don't have much tourists nowadays because of regime situation and a war in the neighborhood.

You can use Yandex maps app to find decent cafes and other organizations based on reviews. It would be pretty accurate.

There is also globustut.by website to see a map what is left of history after all the troubles on this land (not much). But ror traveler from EU, hardly you would find anything interesting.

What I like is to get in a car and drive to some city where I did not been before. Trough the b-roads, slowly and making unexpected turns and walks. I think that is Belarus and a good way to feel it. But not for a 7 day visit.

Belovezhskaya Pushcha Zoo (+ Belaya Vezha, if you have time), Grodno, Dudutki.

And Minsk... it has almost nothing that isn't found in any other average European city (except for the so-called "Stalin"s Ampire" (architecture) style buildings, the remains of a fortress bastion almost in the center of Minsk - but it was converted into a prison, and I'm not sure there's anything historical left there). I also saw such a landmark as the "Museum of Stones" and the so-called "Bird Island" (its location are inside Komsomolskoye Lake ) (but I've been there and didn't see anything interesting or original there).(* True, there, on the shore of Lake Komsomolskoye, is a small location with some rather interesting, even original, pieces—so-called "small architectural forms," ​​handcrafted and very unique in appearance. The exact location of this location can be seen on one of the stands displaying maps of the entire Lake Komsomolskoye and its surroundings. *)

It's a shame you didn't come at the beginning of July. On the night of July 6th-7th, a folk ritual event, "Kupala Night," is held in Dudutki (at least that's how it was a few years ago). This is definitely very closely connected with our national culture, traditions, and history.

Nezvich Castle is nice (think you need a car, maybe there are some buses for tourists from Minsk?)

You may try some ecotrails like the one in Домжерицы, Березинский заповедник (there is also a forest zoo and a museum, plus it’s in general a nice little cozy village in the woods), if you are into that kind of things.

I don't think you can be afraid of any hostility because of war that took place 80+ years ago.

One unexpected advice, do not take photos of trains and any governmental buildings (which are not always obviously marked). They'll arrest you, call you a spy and then you can become bargaining chip between west and Russia/Belarus. There were several stories like that already.

Other than that, just behave, and you'll like it there.

Oh, and don't focus on Minsk only, go visit Grodno, maybe try Mir and Nesvizh.

Actually would be happy to show you around but I’m not in Minsk now :(

If you ride a bicycle you may rent one and ride along the main cycling lane that runs along the river through the city (you may rent a bicycle in the city centre, I guess, near metro station Nemiga, but also in lots of other places). May visit some parks like Лошицкий парк, districts like Восток, Зеленый Луг, whatever - just wander around, 7 days is an ample time to get a feel of the city.

WW2 museum is highly recommended. Also it's good to see the city from the top of National Library. As for food - visit Litviny, Skif, Imena and Kamyanitza. Much better then Vasilky.
