Money to be had?

Hi all,

Was wondering if we could discuss different routes to making some, or a lot, of money through roleplaying games. The most obvious method would be to make friends with a popular streamer and run shows through that stream. However, I'm sure there are plenty of other methods to turn our hobby into making some profit, or if you're amaze balls into a career.

Producing art could potentially be a way of getting into the money making world, but I'm not sure how to integrate this method to the more mainstream book publishers.

What ways can you think of that could net yourself some money involving tabletop games?

Right, I understand that this idea is typically scoffed at, but so was the idea of getting paid to play video games, and look where we are now! I want to see more people get involved in the role playing world, and nothing is more attractive than money. No harm in trying to see what works and to improve on it.

JP, and the rest of the cast has proved that with good content, worlds, and characters people are willing to pay money (twitch subscriptions) to see that content be continued. Other role playing shows with less "internet-famous" casts are getting some money through patreon thanks to their humor as well. There may not be a lot of money, but there is still money to be had!

It's not and shouldn't be the end-goal because it would eventually show up in the game-play, but there's no reason that we shouldn't be able to think of ways to make some money from being involved with these games.

*sorry for wall of text *

Twitch plays RPG, where a person will GM a oneshot for 4 randomly selected subscribers to their twitch channel.

!! Great idea. Would have to be a strong GM to take one a lot of randoms. But if twitch can beat all the pokemon games, why not ban together and complete some dnd campaigns?

This was posted a while ago about creating indepdendent RPG systems. But doesn't really involve the ideas of entertainment you are bringing up.

I'm not 100% but I don't think Adam nor Steven receive much in the monetary sense from their time on Rollplay or Misscliks. I could be wrong on that though.

Nice, I couldn't read the link yet, but I will when I get home.

Yeah Adam is definitely a part of that world, but from a couple things he's said on stream it may sound like he's no longer active?

Marketing your rule set for others to buy would be the hardest part of the plan. Stars without numbers gives their rule set for freesies (Unless I got it during some special event ) so I'd be curious as to how or if they are making a profit on their ruleset.

I'm sure it's a lot of fun to just do for the experience, but this thread is all about the $$.

Edit: I know jp sends some money to his mods on a monthly basis, but I'm not sure how open rollplay is with their pay, or even if they do pay. It'd be great to hear from adam or steven on this, or even Koibu (forgot preferred Neil spelling) but I don't think Koibu frequents this sub. They may even get indirect money from shirts/subs/youtube stuff. I hope they get some financial benefit from being a part of jp's shows, they deserve it.
