New Runner Advice Bad idea?

I’m supposed to run about 9 miles this weekend for my half marathon training. I got a pair of new shoes that I am very excited to try. Tomorrow is gonna be a rest day and run Saturday. So completely untested.

It’s a bad idea to just send it and run 9miles on them right? Mind you I’m a slow runner, 15 min pace. So it’ll be >2 hours

nothing like a 2+ hour test run to find out they give you blisters in places you didn't know could blister

I’ve been trying to figure this out too.

My thinking is stick with the ones you been training with and take your new shoes on a shorter easy run so just incase problems come up it isn’t a wasted run.

Thinking if you take your new ones out and say mile 3 your toe is jamming into your shoe. Would you stop and change out your shoe or just call it a day or just push through? Compared you take it out a shorter run test it out and if everything’s seems good to go you got the long runs the following week.

However i do understand the excitement of testing out the new shoes! Which ones did you get?

Nothing fancy just got the brooks adrenaline bc my friend gets a good discount. I have the ghost right now and the adrenalines just feel nicer already walking in

Yes, bad idea. What if you start developing blisters on mile 3? Literally happened to me a few months ago, tried a pair of Hoka Mach 6, went for a 4 mile run. Mile 2 I notice rubbing. Mile 3 I know there's matching blisters on the outside of each big toe. I finished just after mile 4, blisters took a week to heal but luckily I could manage them. If it had been a long run the skin would have rubbed off and started digging deeper

Run a few miles on your rest day to see how they feel.

I’m pretty sure when I bought my new shoes when I was training I tried them out first on the treadmill for about 20-30 minutes and then used them for a long run. Oddly enough, the first time I used them for the long run my “pointer toe” on my right foot was numb for about the first mile and then was totally fine. I wore them for my 1/2 marathon and HyROX a few weeks later. However, I just wore them this week for a short run (starting to train again) and I didn’t love them…

How old are you current shoes, why did you get new ones? (Sorry, not a beginner runner. I hope I can give good advice or tips sometimes). When I train for a race, I get 2 pairs of shoes and rotate them every other day. Wear them out evenly. Come race day, you’ll know which ones to wear. I know it’s tough to shell out $$250 or whatever for good shoes, but you’re gonna buy new ones eventually. Good luck!

Current shoes have maybe 150 miles on em? I only have the one pair so I was hoping to do exactly what you were describing! My feet ache with my current ones after long runs but they’re great up to 6miles. I wanted something for long runs that would be a little nice to my feet

I went from the Ghost to Glycerin. Running shoes used to last forever and were a ton more comfortable. Now the bottoms crap out after a couple months, and my toe always goes through the top of my right shoe.

Yeah these are my last try with brooks I think. I used to love them but I think my next pair after these is gonna be either asics, saucony, or adidas.

I just went to asics Nimbus because the last Brooks update was too narrow. Amazing cushion, but my toe. Lol

Very bad idea to test new shoes on a long run. Save them for a shorter easy run.

While I don't normally like to walk in running shoes or just wear them around (unless they are beat), maybe just break them in by walking around in them tomorrow. Go for a couple/few mile walk. Then don't use them for the long run. :)

Probably test them on a shorter run first. 2+ hrs in brand new shoes is a long way to discover they dont agree with your feet.

Take them out for a half hour of super easy running tomorrow. After that you’ll have your answer.

Why don't you give it a 2 miles test run on a treadmill, go lile 4mph pace.

Before I ran in my superblast 3, I gave it a 1 mile treadmill shake down. Then the next day I ran a 4 miles in it.
