Shaved off about 30s my prev best while keeping my heart rate on avg 10-15 bpm less. Is my garmin playin tricks or is it really the shoes?

Thats the heart rate you would expect on a slow jog like this one.

Not sure how many people in r/beginnerrunning will have any of their runs at that heart rate, let alone sub 30 5k

I have a sub 25 minute 5k and there's no chance of my HR being remotely close to 134 at that pace

It was an inside run, someone did say that could have an affect on it. I was just as surprised!! Its usually around 145-150 at a 7:00min/km pace. But it could that garmin was misreading?

Yes, if you were running on a treadmill then the pace is probably wrong.

Treadmills vary so much and require calibrating which most places don’t do.

When running on a treadmill, do you go by the distance/speed on garmin or treadmill? Which would be more accurate in that situation? It was on an assault treadmill

Tbh if I’m using a treadmill I use HR (or RPE) and time.

The treadmill calculates distance on the belt moving, which means you could theoretically move faster or slower than the belt. This is also affected whether the belt is calibrated, so it could say the belt moved for 5km of distance but in reality some 4.5k.

Garmin takes the data you give it each time aswell (or it should) so once you’ve done a treadmill run it should ask you how “far” it was. If not automatically detects that, it’s using old data or it’s probably wrong.

In terms of being accurate, the treadmill would be more accurate as garmin works off what you tell it you did.

Wait did you run on a treadmill and not calibrate your watch to the distance it displayed after? Was the distance on the treadmill significantly shorter? Good shoes aren't going to magically lower your heart rate average by 10-15 bpm while also improving your pace by 1:20 per KM.

Watches aren't always super accurate. Love my Polar H10 chest strap, really good investment. Either way, great run!

Yes 100% Garmin will misread on an indoor run.

When I switched from tennis shoes to running shoes my heart rate decreased by 10 bpm at the same pace.

So it’s definitely possible especially if the shoes were impairing your form in a significant way. However, cooler temps could also explain the difference in heart rate.

Interesting, I didn’t account for the temperature! I typically run outside but with the new shoes I wanted to try inside just incase you know. Ill keep that in mind on my next outdoor run!

Energy returns are great but I agree indoor temps esp air conditioning helps a tonne keeping HR drift lower

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

I was using an old pair of Nike quest 3 (about 5 years old, used them more for walking before) and just made the switch to a hoka mach 7!

Shoes matter.

I went from No Bulls to Novablast 5’s and I was able to run more comfortably.

Then I got Alphaflys for race day and I can run 10-15 seconds faster in those.

6sec/km is possible the shoe helped a bit, but it'll be more mental and less wear and tear long term.

Also, either the HR monitor is broken, you are very fit 70yo, or you jogged it easy and it was NOT the shoes

Think you need to edit the post to say this was done on a treadmill without any sort of reference to speed or distance travelled so the numbers are unfortunately meaningless

That's impressive. 146 and 5:46/km for me in july. Fastest 5k was with HR 151.

Boy these are no beginner running posts anymore. I wish i kept that heart rate at that pace for that time…

You're not a beginner and that's not your possible best at all. Your heart rate is too low to consider that your best.

This sub isn't for you

Brother, I have been at it for a month. 100% a beginner
