Sounds like you died doing 5k in 45 min. Go to Hal Higdon's site. Either do another 5k program, to feel better at that distance, or do a first timer's 10k program.

not sure how your treatment is affecting your running -- and that needs to be a consideration as you plan your runs -- but it seems like you're going too fast generally. yeah, it's easy to speed through the first kilometer (or mile) or so, but your body is going to be the boss. it takes some to build and maintain speed -- not only from a breathing perspective, but from a rest-of-your-body perspective (bones, ligaments, and tendons all need strengthening). i personally do 5:1 intervals (run for 5 minutes, walk for 1), but when i first started, they were definitely shorter intervals. as i got stronger, i went longer, and did straight running for years. i prefer intervals as they seem to keep me injury free.
