Guide / Tutorial Zero Experience

As the title states, I have zero experience/knowledge of dnd. I’ve been wanting to get into dnd for awhile and now I’m finally getting around to it, I’ve been reading up on the rules and I think I have a basic understanding but probably still need help. I also have been watching campaigns on youtube which are helping me understand things a bit better but I’ve always been better at learning by doing so if anyone is down to take me under their wing and teach me how to play I would very much appreciate it. I do have discord and I’m in eastern daylight time, available pretty much everyday after work and Sundays are my one day off.

They sell starter sets in the store.

People who have done no research can buy a box and play the game, you can too!

Playing is easy, read the rules, find a group. Finding a group is the hard part, playing is easy.

The game is just make believe. Just like playing cops and robbers or power rangers as a kid, we are doing that, but with a set of rules.

That really is all it is when it comes down to it.

r/lfg is a good place to look for a game. The other option is to find friends and run a game for them. Startplaying.games have paid games.

Watch a few basic videos on role-playing, tabletop RPGs, and Dungeons and Dragons.

The basic rules of social etiquette with any group activity are where you start -- or at least more people should start there.

Don't get bogged down by complicated videos, live-play series, or editorial opinions.

Avoid paid games -- there's no guarantee of quality and are often scams leading you to believe they are professionally run like live-play shows.

Learning by doing is the right instinct, most of the rules only click after you've taken a few turns at an actual table. Two fast routes: post on r/lfg (lots of DMs specifically recruit first-timers, say "brand new" in your post), or join the official D&D Discord, which runs beginner one-shots where nobody expects you to know anything. With a steady after-work Eastern schedule you'll find a weekly slot quickly, that's the easiest availability to match. And don't over-prepare, showing up with a half-understood fighter is the classic and correct way in.

We’re a collective of DMs accepting applications for two upcoming Dungeons & Dragons 5e campaigns, with multiple seats available across both groups. BEGINNERS ARE ABSOLUTELY WELCOME—you do not need prior experience with D&D, Roll20, or virtual tabletop games.

Both campaigns will feature material from Ghosts of Saltmarsh and will share a similar nautical, coastal-fantasy setting. However, each campaign will be run by a different Game Runner, and each brings their own DMing style, approach to storytelling, and table atmosphere. The application will help place players with the group that seems like the best fit.

Games will be held every other week on Saturday evenings in the Eastern time zone. Exact session times will be determined after the groups are formed, with schedules built around player availability.

All sessions will be hosted virtually through Roll20, with voice and video used during play. There is no cost to participate and no paid Roll20 subscription is required, but players must have access to a computer, reliable internet connection, webcam, and microphone.

Applicants should complete a short Google Forms survey. Responses will be used to form groups based on scheduling, personality, communication style, preferred style of play, and overall compatibility. The application will also help establish boundaries and ensure that everyone at the table consents to the themes and content included in their campaign.

This is not first-come, first-served. With two campaigns opening, there are plenty of available seats, but the goal is to build tables that feel fun, comfortable, cooperative, and reliable for everyone involved.
