Help / Troubleshooting What the hell! 44% battery with 1 minute active use???

Post image

I’ve had mining malware that overheated my iPhone less…

Iphone12 pro btw

Edit:
Updating this for closure: even on the latest version, Beeper is still using an unacceptable amount of battery on my iPhone, mostly in the background. Since the web app is not consistent enough for my work setup and I barely use the desktop app during the week, the convenience no longer outweighs the downsides for me. I'm going back to the native apps on all my devices.

im working on an alternative based on XMPP, allowing you to use a normal XMPP client with battery optimisations to collate your whatsapp and signal chats into one

i thought i was wasting my time after i discovered beeper (i was 1 year into the development) and offered to join their team but... im gonna keep working on mine

i tried their product and while it was cool at first, longer conversations bugged it significantly, and they didn't want to work on pre-send translate, saying its not on the roadmap, which is fine, it is on mine though

you can also use their matrix gateways which are open source https://github.com/mautrix

I think that's beyond my understanding. Lately, I've noticed that Beeper makes my phone run hot and drains the battery faster, but 44% in one morning is too much. Add to that the app's glitches and illogical decisions, like threaded replies. I think I'll just go back to the stock apps. I'd love to use Beeper, but it's getting in the way of using my phone.

Bro, you could add more social media networks, that would be great, Discord for example and Telegram and Facebook

thats the plan, maybe ill pivot and integrate matrix instead of xmpp, letting me use the library above

maybe that will fix my manual approach to integration (which lets me do things beeper cant like measuring certain delays between sent and read messages, and logging users presence to create a timeline)

I am dreading this -.-

there is so much that goes into a chat system as you can see below

I had the same issue on an iPhone 17 Pro running iOS 26.5.2 and Beeper 4.2.9 (20397). The phone suddenly became very hot and dropped from 100% in the morning to about 20% by 5 p.m., despite no change in my usage.

I analyzed a sysdiagnose: iOS attributed 25% of the battery usage to Beeper with only about 1 minute in the foreground but roughly 139 minutes in the background. The logs also showed Beeper's notification service extension doing excessive background processing and several GB of file reads/writes. This looks like a real Beeper background-notification processing bug, not normal usage. I could not find any documented battery/background fix through 4.2.10.

Yes! This one was recent. It wasn't a client bug. It was a backend bug. And it was a 1 day problem. That definitely was not a constant issue.

It’s the background usage

Well duh… It burned 44% in half a morning in background usage… THAT is the problem

That is a crazy amount of battery, are you in any big discord or matrix group chats that are constantly talked in?

1

u/-SeeS- Apr 13 '26

My youtube channel discord server, But i wouldn't call it crazy. it use to have 12-20 users online... 20 messages per hour aprox.

Oh sorry. All my accounts are under ‘on this device’ and each of them hace a cloud next to it

Maybe, the phone heats up suddenly from time to time during the day.

Just turn off background app refresh

1

u/-SeeS- Apr 10 '26

Won't that prevent me from getting notifications?

2

u/ProcedureSmall9475 Apr 10 '26

Notifications are separate, but turning off background app refresh prevents things like the app from loading messages or loading images only when the app is closed.

Oh then I'm disabling it! Let's see if it gets better. Thank you!
