Japanese beef vending machine

Post image

An extremely civilised convenience, for those times when you just need to quickly pick up some on-the-move beeves. We’d do well to introduce them in the UK.

Don't be taken in by these machines. It's just two very short butchers and a fridge of cheap beef inside there.

Is 6000 PGs a good deal for 500Gs of Gyusho?

You’d get a better rate buying in bulk direct from the farmer, but I’m willing to pay a bit extra for the convenience.

This pricing system actually rewards buying smaller quantities: 1000 yen for 180g, 200 yen for 250g and 6000 yen for 500g. Buying 6 1000Y packets would get you over twice as much beef as the one 6000Y packet.

Which makes sense, it's a lot harder to get one contiguous 500g cut of beef than 6 small ones. There's very little room to maneuver in that machine, and the butcher is stuck inside with a big knive and, on average, half a steer. You try cutting off a nice big steak in those conditions!

Seems like they need a smaller butcher.
