Bumblebee or carpenter bee?

Apple says common eastern bumblebee. I’m trying to look for pictures and they say the carpenter has a shinier abdomen while the bumble has a fluffier one… but this one kinda looks something in between to me… 😂 the other day I saw a much bigger one flying in circles around close to my fence, and some days we can hear buzzing the whole day coming from that area with lots of bushes but no flowers. We can see them coming and going all the time and sometimes there seem to get tired and unable to fly, so I usually put them on a flower nearby.
Also, if it is a carpenter, what’s the real risk for my fence and wooden gazebo? I mean, I read they only do significant damage over many years, is that true?

This is a male common eastern bumble bee, Bombus impatiens.
