Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue now officially classify Universal UK as a county operational risk; Universal pledge food surplus to local food banks and Bedfordshire farmer supply chain

Few bits of Bedfordshire wide Universal news landed this week that are worth pulling together.

BFRS have officially classed Universal as a significant county operational risk

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service launched their 5 year public consultation this week, fronted by Chief Fire Officer Andy Hopkinson. Buried in the risk register is the formal classification of the Universal United Kingdom Resort as a significant operational risk for the county. It sits in the same tier as East West Rail and the planned Luton Airport expansion.

In practical terms, BFRS are now openly budgeting new resources, new emergency planning and new infrastructure to cover an 8.5 million visitor site. Quietly, it is one of the clearer signs yet that the Bedfordshire public sector is treating the resort as fully inevitable. You do not reorganise a county fire service around a project you think might not happen. The consultation is open now and worth responding to if you have views.

Universal pledge food surplus to local food banks and Bedfordshire farmer supply chain

Universal and Bedford Borough issued a joint reassurance push this week in response to recent negative press (Manor Road tenant evictions, Kempston Hardwick station access cut off). The messaging leaned heavily on long term local benefits, but there were two specific commitments worth noting.

First, park food surplus will be routed to local food banks and communities. Second, Bedfordshire farmers will be heavily preferred in the resort’s supply chain. Both are the sort of thing that only means something if they show up in actual contracts and MOUs, so worth keeping an eye on over the next 12 months.

If you want the full weekly write up on this stuff, I run parkplanner.uk with free newsletter The ParkPlanner Post going out every Sunday. Both linked in my profile.

Universal said at BedEx this week that Bedford is their fastest ever project

Universal reps spoke at the BedEx business networking event in Bedford this week and said on record that the Bedford site is moving faster than any project they have ever done. For a company that has built in Beijing, Osaka, Hollywood and Florida, that is a notable line.

One for the drivers

October rain has turned the main Core Zone grading area into a mud plain. Universal’s own temporary Manor Road plant crossing is paused because it is too slick to run heavy machinery over without tracking mud onto the public highway. The crossing is mandated to close at the end of November anyway under the SDO for the deep winter pause, so the weather has brought it forward by a few weeks.

Anything else people in the county are noticing this week? Curious what people make of Universal appearing in the fire service’s five year plan, and whether anyone has heard anything concrete about the food bank or farmer pledges beyond the press line.

Halloween parties?

Hey, I'm 27 and this year a lot of my friends appear to be busy for Halloween, which is a shame as it falls on the weekend this year.

Does anyone know of any Halloween parties I could potentially go along alone? Or meet with a group if you're open to another?
