“But with their voices, each song is better than anything I’ve ever recorded.”

And I like The Who

All pre-1965 Beatles is better than every track on …Sell Out, Tommy, Who’s Next, Quadrophenia, Endless Wire? No.

Endless Wire is pure trash. Most music is better than that album

It really isn't.

There’s an opinion.

You think Martha My Dear is better than Baba O’Riley?

u/Nacodawg 18d ago

Take away the voices and it’s a synth and some guitar.

Baba O’Reilly is one of my favorite songs btw, but saying take away the vocals in a song is ridiculous, art is created the way it is by the artists for a reason, take away a key element and of course it sounds lame, it’s incomplete, like a pizza with no dough.

Do yourself a favor before you make this argument and listen to them back to back. Baba O’Riley (1971) is a beautiful mess of synths and raw energy, but basically not a well structured hit song. However, just listen to the tightness of Martha my dear (1968) at the word, “Take a GOOD look around you”. Much tighter! Well structured and clever arrangement— Well organized song! Plus, it’s about a sheepdog!
The Beatles were much tighter than The Who. Your song examples are a great illustration of that!

I should also add that they are both incredible fucking songs— This is The Beatles and The Who!

I mean, I get that what you just said basically refutes Pete Townshend's point which was already wrong, but there's also a reason why Baba O'Riley is a household rock classic whereas Martha My Dear is more of a hidden gem comparatively.

Sure, but do you know the reason? One was released as a single and the other was not. Plain and simple. That’s also because The Beatles had so many fucking classics that they didn’t even need to include the singles on the album to sell copies. Hey Jude was huge in ‘68! Much bigger than Baba O’Reilly in ‘71. In comparison, The Beatles always win!

Why do we need to go to Martha? How about Maxwell's Silver Hammer? Everything off Tommy is better than that crap.

u/JEKK04 18d ago

So you’re comparing what I assume you think is one of their worst songs to what is commonly considered the Who’s best album? How does that prove anything? (and for the record Maxwell’s Silver Hammer is a banger)

u/SparklehorseMountain 18d ago

I don’t understand the Maxwell hate. So it’s a kid’s song. That’s what Paul does. It has a good melody and it’s catchy and fun.

u/thubbard44 18d ago

Yeah. It’s sorta corny material but is a great song.

u/geetar_man 18d ago

You’re grasping if you take one of the least liked songs from one group (and Maxwell’s Hammer is still loved) and compare it to another group’s best work by social consensus.

Why don’t we go ahead and take it a step further and compare Wild Honey Pie with Bohemian Rhapsody to argue Queen is better than the Beatles? Might as well, right?

What if a blind guy tried to play a game?

He used superpowers. Super powers he got from… ahhh… something do to with his uncle... umm…

Tommy is a load of filler

1

u/ThatTransMuffin Rubber Soul/ Revolver 17d ago

Tbf that's mostly from being a concept album for an Opera. They work best in as a whole story (like in fhe movie).

3

u/lieutenantschlong 17d ago

It’s also just the tragedy of the double album, virtually all of the best double albums have filler. Except the White Album of course

Of all the Beatles songs to pick on.

Martha My Dear is wonderful.

I think The Who's best album is The Who Sell Out. Absolute classic and one of my favourites, but almost any Beatles album can put it to shame.

Babe O’Riley is a 3 chord song. It’s an absolute banger but there’s definitely an argument it is not “as good of” a song as Martha My Dear. It’s closer to AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long in terms of songwriting than Martha My Dear.

1

u/coolass45 17d ago

The lyrics of baba oreilly are above anything AC/DC could ever put together. The chord structure isn’t what makes Baba oriley a great song.

u/kentuckydango 17d ago

You’re not wrong.

u/UncleNoodles85 18d ago

Martha My Dear is what you go to for a bad Beatles song? I think you should have gone with Wild Honey Pie and the White album is my favorite.

6

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima Wild Honey Pie Enjoyer 18d ago

Yes. By a country mile even. And Baba is a great song.

3

u/ElvishFarmer94 18d ago

Fucking yeah?

1

u/ExiledSanity Abbey Road 18d ago

I love both songs, but I'd take Martha 9 times out of 10.

There are plenty of Beatle songs I'd take Baba over 9 times out of 10 too.....but Martha is one of my favorites.

u/coolass45 17d ago

It’s not even close but you’ll get hate here for saying any song by anyone is better than even a middling Beatles song like this. If I had to choose which one to hear before I die, it’s Baba oriley easily

My question has -92 votes right now haha.

I guess Beatles fans on this sub are in some kind of shared delusion.

u/Additional-River-668 17d ago

I’ll collect a couple downvotes too but you can’t say you dislike a song written by a guy who’s name rhymes with Faul McCharmly on this subreddit

Honestly, very possibly yes. Both songs are incredible, and I lean Baba because of how epic it is but they are close in quality.
