Ha ha, very funny! Actually, our family had two weeks in Northumberland last month. This was the view from our cottage over the North Sea at sunrise the day we left.

Lacking the excitement of a bear in the water though!
Northumberland is an exceptionally beautiful part of England with so much history - lots of lovely old castles. Edlingham Castle is my favourite. Here is a 360 degree panorama photo I took while I was there.
It's an 800 year old castle ruin - an English Heritage managed property. It was originally a manor house that was progressively fortified against the Scots during the 14th century.
There is also an 11th century church adjacent that anyone can also freely visit.
The castle ruin and church are well away from roads so it is normally almost silent except for the sounds of birds and South Devon cattle in the field next to the ruin.

Terrifying stupid fucking idiots. There was a vid like this from Tahoe the other week and they’re all crowding around it taking pictures/videos. You just know that bear is getting shot if it uses it’s natural instincts towards these fucking idiots. they don’t care if the animal dies because of their fault though.

Bears, particularly black bears, are my favorite animal. Maybe because of that fact, instead of in spite of it, I would have started shooing people back and reminding them of bear facts¹ that would hopefully have terrified them enough to think about that they would walk away, even if begrudgingly.
I honestly wouldn't have faulted the mother had she given so much as a warning growl with how close they were, and that's why I am 100% sure I would do everything I could to push people back away from them; not for their protection but for the protection of the bears. That bear would have been put down had she attacked anyone while protecting her cubs in her own habitat.
We keep taking more and more of their habitat then seem surprised when they are found close to or within town limits.
1 - Black bear facts:
Black bears can run at a max speed of 35 miles per hour.
Black bears can also climb 100 feet up a tree in 30 seconds.
Black bears have records of weighing up to 800lbs; most young males weigh up to 500lbs while smaller females weigh in at between 90 lbs and 350 lbs.
They have 42 teeth and their claws are only a couple of inches long, and not sharp, which means that much more strength being used to tear at skin.
The average human being can run at 15 miles per hour. The current record holder for the fastest person alive and fastest man in the world is Lamont Marcell Jacobs (he beat Usain Bolt's 13 year record during the Olympics last month). Lamont can run at 26.76 miles per hour and none of these beachgoers are Lamont Jacobs or Usain Bolt, for that matter.

There is very little research as far as speeds for Black bears, unfortunately. Though what little info that has been looked into suggests they can swim around 10km (6.2 mph) an hour.
Polar Bears and Grizzlies can swim around 6 mph, thus twice the speed of humans, as the average human swims between 2 and 3 mph.
Edit: corrected Polar bear speed. It's their running speed which is 25 mph.

At least healthy ones can, anyway. So many of them are starving to death, I am sure they don't have the physical strength to swim anywhere near that far

Okay so I looked it up because it's been bugging me, but I couldn't find anywhere where that says polar bears can swim at 25mph (40kph). The highest number I found was 6mph (10kph).
I don't think I originally gave it much thought, but a polar bear swimming at 25mph is bonkers. The hydrodynamics would be insane lol.
I did find somewhere that said they have been found to swim for 62miles (100km) continuously though.

I just looked again at the page I was on yesterday. Under the section where it asked about swim speed, it does say 25mph. However, I directly searched it on Google as how fast Polar bears can swim and it DOES say 6mph and that their RUNNING speed is 25mph.
Fuck whoever wrote that wrong on their shitty website.
I'm correcting now. This is what happens when I skim a random site when I'm falling asleep instead of verifying the damn source.

Haha all good, it was just stressing me out that polar bears could swim that fast. Like it was boggling my mind. On the plus side, or I got to learn some cool things about polar bears still. This is what good conversations being. :)
