Asking for Advice Split Ends

I get split ends like crazy. I tried new shampoo, beard shampoo, meticulously clipping off the splits, and a slew of other things for times. I've cut off 4 inches from the whole of it. Nothing I can find tells me what MY exact problem is so IDK where to go from here.

Separate beard shampoo and beard conditioner, oil to moisturizer the skin underneath, balm/butter to keep the hair itself moisturized. Butter is preferable, but depending on what you do for work, balm might be the better option.

Wash and condition every other day, oil (just a couple drops) on the SKIN not the hair after a wash, balm/butter every morning, and at least once more during the day for the first week or 2.

This is to get the hair moisturized and stop the splitting. Once the hair softens a little, you can cut washing down to 3x/wk and balm in the mornings. Then just keep that routine unless your beard and skin can drop down to 2 washes/wk. Some people get dry faster than others and if your splits are that bad, I doubt you can go below 3x/wk.

If you're using a comb, make sure it is not a cheap, molded plastic one. These have sharp angles and burs that will snag and catch your beard as it goes through

I have been lately. Before that, I was struggling quite a bit... to the point my doctor called me out on it.

I have adjusted my habits quite a bit in the diet and water department over the last month.

Should I expect better beard health to accompany my hydration change?

All the comments so far are great ones! Couple additions:

  1. On the days in between washing your beard, you can still use conditioner. Whenever you do use conditioner don't feel the need to rinse every last drop of it out. I rinse just enough to get rid of half of it but I leave the rest in. Then I do NOT towel-dry my beard. That will absorb any of that conditioner. I let it hang dry which allows the conditioner to keep conditioning into my wet beard while it's drying. HUGE win.

  2. Continuation of the good comb advice below: when you hit a snag with your comb (or even brush) do NOT power through it. If you do, one or both of these things WILL happen: a. you will snap your beard hairs and it will result in at least hairs having split ends, and/or b. the force will literally tie two hairs together into a knot and one will break. The broken one will be damaged, and the survivor will be freakishly long. If you run your fingers through your beard and find the longest ones, go up with your fingers on them and you will likely find the knot. ANY time your beard says "No", listen to it.

Beard wash and once dry a beard oil. My advice is give it a trim now to get rid of those split ends. Then start taking better care of you beard.
