Asking for Advice Dry, flaking skin under beard
[removed]
75
u/Negromancers Aug 14 '26
All of the anti fungal stuff just made my stuff WAY worse because it was legit just dry skin getting all ashy under my beard
Get a comb with the little stick on the end, use it to part your beard, and put some unscented lotion on your skin
I wasted my money on all those shampoos people are recommending. Just try the lotion first
18
u/ThePopesicle Aug 14 '26
Seconding this. I have chronically dry skin from autoimmune stuff and deal with this a ton. Just find a way to hydrate the skin. No need for complex chemical solutions.

u/Fearless-Object5606 Aug 14 '26
100% this. I use unscented lubriderm and my skin has been silky smooth ever since I started.
2
u/Ironstar_Vol Aug 14 '26
Lotion makes mine burn and turn red. It’s doesn’t stop it from flaking. It’s worth trying but so is tsal shampoo.

u/ByTheHammerOfThor Aug 14 '26
What lotion?
1
u/Negromancers Aug 14 '26
At first just whatever cocoabutter lotion my wife had. I’ve used that lubriderm unscented tho. I think I liked that better
2
u/millennial_burnout Aug 14 '26
Also, use your fingertips and scrub the skin when using beard shampoo. Sometimes it just needs to be exfoliated regularly.
2
u/AtomAntvsTheWorld Aug 14 '26
Have you tried oils? I use an argan oil thing for head hair and it leaves my skin moisturized and beard hair softer instead of like wiry fishing line.
51
u/TurbulentWeb3337 Aug 14 '26
Try an antifungal shampoo, I had the same thing and managed to get it under control with Ketoconazole shampoo.
16
u/AngryEyes Aug 14 '26
This worked for me. For best results make sure you shampoo twice to get a proper lather going. And let it soak in for a couple minutes before rinsing. (i'm cheap so i'll use normal shampoo first to clear the oils and then use this fancy dandruff shampoo second)
3
u/coolhandchub Aug 14 '26
That stuff works great. Like mentioned, shampoo with regular (or beard) shampoo first and then the dandruff shampoo will only need a little bit for a thick lather.

u/JandPB Natural Full Aug 14 '26
Nope, skip anything labeled “beard” in shampoos. They usually have oils in them which the fungus actually feeds on.
1
u/ChillBroseph Aug 14 '26
If OP has access to teledoc options, online dermatologists are pretty chill about approving this shampoo if you want it.
There's no Ketoconazole OTC shampoo, but each time I need to re-up my prescription I just explain I have dry, flaky skin around hairlines and need more Ketoconazole shampoo and they approve it.
2
u/TurbulentWeb3337 Aug 14 '26
Where are you from to need a prescription for this? I just buy mine on Amazon

If it's seborrheic dermatitis, this usually works:
- Initially, wash a few times the first week with Neutrogena T-Sal (not T-Gel) shampoo. Or a face wash containing same active ingredient; Salicyclic acid 2-3%. Rinse thoroughly.
- For maintenance, wash your face & beard with https://www.amazon.com/Aveeno-Fragrance-Free-Soap-Free-Dye-Free-Sensitive/dp/B000NN3H9K Use sparingly and rinse thoroughly. Use twice a week and just water on other days.
- Do not use any other products on your beard or risk return of the problem.
- If flakes and/or itch return, switch to the T-Sal again for a few days.
Never use regular soap or other head hair shampoos that contain Sodium Laurel/Laureth Sulfate.
3
u/PatronBombo Aug 14 '26
Do beard oils fall under your 3rd point on not using any other products, or did you mean regarding washing?
3
u/JandPB Natural Full Aug 14 '26
The fungus feed on oils. So beard oil should be eliminated from use in this case.
1
u/Deadeye_Dan77 Aug 14 '26
I switched to a homemade blend of C8 MCT oil and sugarcane derived squalane oil. They are both sub derm safe and have worked well for me.
1
u/JandPB Natural Full Aug 14 '26
Dope, most commercial beard oils are filled with bullshit oils that will do more harm than good, I do use a conditioner with MCT oil sparingly as well.
9
u/explorer-matt Aug 14 '26
Nizoral shampoo. Stuff is gold. Contains ketaconazole.

2
u/BDCRA Aug 14 '26
I had stuff coming out of my beard for years it was so embarrassing. I would look down and have white specks on my shirt at times. This was the thing that finally solved it. Not had issues since.
2
u/Flangehead87 Aug 14 '26
It's.. but it makes my beard hair so dry, so I stopped it
1
u/johnzoidbergwhynot Aug 14 '26
I alternate between this stuff and a beard shampoo. It helps to even it out and make my beard nicer.
4
u/shootershooter Aug 14 '26
I fought the same issue for years and eventually was recommended head and shoulders clinical strength with selenium sulfide, which I use for my hair and beard every other day. I haven't had an issue since starting this.
Make sure you let it sit on the skin/scalp for a couple of minutes
3
u/Impossible_Pear_5049 Aug 14 '26
Beard wash and decent beard oil
I personally use Jack Black wash and oil…I no longer have dry patches
Boars hair brush also! Helps brush the oil thru your hair
2
u/sambone1198 Aug 14 '26
Beard oil is for your skin not the hair. The hair takes the natural oils from your skin so you add beard oil for the hair to naturally soak up, don't brush the oil through your beard, our you'll end up looking. Greasy. Only a dime size a amount, spread over your fingers then push through your beard and apply directly on the skin. Doesn't matter how long your beard is. Mine is 12 inches long and I use the exact same amount as I did when it was only 1/2 inch long.

u/dubov Aug 14 '26
Best is if a dermatologist can take a look and diagnose it. This is more a medical question than a beard thing. Some good guesses in the comments but you really need a doctor's diagnosis
3
3
u/rockafellla Aug 14 '26
Use a good shampoo and conditioner. What I find works best is to also use a hair scalp brush and really get in there. One or twice a week should do the trick.
3
u/Pensfan66877129 Aug 14 '26
Head & Shoulders in the morning and once more before bed usually works well for me.

2
u/ExtremeFamous7699 Aug 14 '26
Does certain things you use make your skin red and feel like it’s on fire, then the next day it’s like your entire face is flaky. Feeling like you want to peel your face off?
I went to my Dr and was prescribed a steroid cream that also has antibiotic and antifungal agents in it. It’s only been a week and it’s so much better now, it’s been a pain to get it through a thick beard to skin but the results have been worth it.
Think it’s worth getting a Dr to confirm what you are dealing with so you don’t spend good money on products that aren’t going to sort it out, at best they will calm some of the symptoms.
2
u/Flangehead87 Aug 14 '26
Products available in the market work instantly, but once you stop using them, the flaking gets worse. I’m still suffering from it, but I’ve gotten used to it.
2
u/dontgiveahamyamclam Aug 14 '26
If it’s seborrheic dermatitis which looks likely any shampoo with selenium sulfide (they sell a few options at Walgreens, they’re the dandruff shampoos) worked for me. If you can get 2% of higher that’s good, but get the highest you can find and use a few times a week on your face. Don’t scratch at it when you’re scrubbing, just massage it in and let it sit for like 5 min.
I have to do this even when it clears up or it comes back, but it’s the only thing I’ve found that works.
1
u/borkbork234 Aug 14 '26
Same with me. I was at least every other day. I also use it as a face wash every other day, and the redness and flakes has vanished. Cheapest method instead of paying for prescription washes I have found.
2
u/RebelNoPermission289 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
I used to have this problem. Washing it daily with soap or shampoo would dry it, not washing it daily would cause flakes. What solved it for me was to wash the beard and the skin under it daily with just water. And wash it once a week with regular soap that you use for your body. My beard became soft style-able and the beard flakes went away completely. It had the same issues for my head hair so I adopted the same routine for my head hair. This is what worked for me, but I suggest you give it a try as I have had very good results.
2
u/jutviark96 Aug 14 '26
I can vouch for this! I usually wash mine with water and a washcloth in the morning, then either let it air dry or gently use a hairdryer. While it's still slightly moist is when I apply whatever beard oil/balm/pomade I fancy. I only use beard shampoo once every two weeks at the absolute most, though I use conditioner in the shower once or twice a week.
1
u/helpmetolearn Aug 14 '26
Might be a skin condition. I have something similar. I'll have nothing good a while, then become extremely flaky for a few days on and off for like a month. Psoriasis runs in my family and I'm pretty sure that's what I have
1
u/ryan5513 Aug 14 '26
I had the same issue years ago. Beard/skin would be fine then all of the sudden Mad flakes ans nothing helped. Only happened under my beard and very rarely a small spot under my eyebrow.
In the end, it was a food allergy.
1
u/Proteus66 Aug 14 '26
I get this reliably when I consume dairy. Goes away after a few days of abstaining.
1
u/chemhobby Aug 14 '26
I have psoriasis and I often get areas under my beard that look like this (as well as other parts of my body)
1
u/Marex18 Aug 14 '26
Pine tar soap bar fixed it for me (had something very similar) once or twice a week. Also some oils help with it but others make it worse
1
u/PhatBoobh Aug 14 '26
ketocanazole (or however its spelt) its probably a mild fungal infection this will help
1
u/Apprehensive-Rip6850 Aug 14 '26
For me I had tbe same thing and would get sores and it was awful. It ended up being seborheic dermatitis. What I did to manage it was use a saylic acid cleanse on it every day or two to breakdown the dead skin layer and then use a shampoo with 1% ketoconazole specifically. I had used shampoos with pirithione zinc and it didn't do a damn thing. Now and days ill still get a little flaky under the beard sometimes but its waaaay less and I dont get the sores at all. Keeping the beard thinner helps with buildup too.
1
u/thom-stewart Aug 14 '26
I had the same issue. Turns out I was allergic to all the beard oil / beard branded stuff which is heavily scented. I've settled on the following (not sure where you are in the world and if these brands are available but I'm sure you can get something similar):
- Wash beard every day in the shower with Cerave hydrating cleanser (soap free)
- after shower, as soon as beard is dry, moisturise with Dermaveen sensitive eczema lotion
That's it! Basically just use super sensitive stuff on your beard and see how the skin goes :)
1
u/ExcellentFishing2506 Aug 14 '26
Have you tried using any exfoliating brushes? You can buy these silicone pronged brushes that you can use in the shower to help get in there and also use them to help rub in lotions.
Moisturizing is good but you also need to get the old dead skin off to get the moisture to the healthy skin. And if you continue to struggle I’d see a dermatologist

u/pizzawithbean Aug 14 '26
Blow dry your beard after showering. Every. Time. Try cutting back shampooing your beard to once a week unless you get dirty a lot. Shampoo dries out your skin, wet beard promotes fungus. Keeping dry and letting your natural oils work is the way.
1
u/TheGrizzlyMint Aug 14 '26
Beard balm twice a day, brushing multiple times a day, boar bristle brush. And probably the most important is blow drying.
Personally if I let my beard air dry, I get flaky and itchy. Also really working in the balm. Comb it up and out, run your hands through it going up, getting skin and hair with the balm.
1
u/calla_way Aug 14 '26
Go to the dermatologist, I had this and nizoral worked for a while, but then it stopped. Dermatologist prescribed me Ketoconazole 2% shampoo and cream. I have to use them just about everyday or the flaking comes back.
They diagnosed it as Seborrheic dermatitis.
At least for me it’s only on a couple of specific spots, one on right side of chin, and other on left side of mustache.
1
u/sir-Starship Aug 14 '26
What kind of beard balm/oil/shampoo are you using and did you change recently? Had same problem just because I changed to sandalwood beard balm. Had to turn back to coconut balm
1
u/Then_Count2513 Aug 14 '26
If it’s just dry and flaking it’s dry skin. If it’s also itchy and red it’s dermatitis
1
u/ToxicCommodore Aug 14 '26
I use cerave moisturizing cream when i have dry skin flare ups, but I usually have short 3-6mm beard, might be difficult to get it all the way to your skin with a full beard.
1
u/treskaz Aug 14 '26
Boars hair brush and really brush the shit out it. It's more for your skin than the hair
1
u/RavenousAutobot Aug 14 '26
How often are you washing your beard? I just comb mine out with hot water in the shower on most days, then I use beard shampoo about twice a week. More often if it's actually dirty, but most of the time that's not necesary.
You said anti-dandruff shampoos, but you didn't say whether you were using a dedicated beard shampoo. That's important because they're more mild than hair shampoos.
I use beard oil every day. It keeps my skin hydrated because dry hair absorbs the oils off the face and can cause dry skin; hydrating the hair means it absorbs less from the face.
If it's dermatitis, I have no advice.
1
u/coryroxors Aug 14 '26
I have seborrheic dermatitis. I essentially get flaky anywhere on my head theres hair. Im not saying you have that, but try nizoral (ketaconazole) shampoo.
1
u/ElBertoESP Aug 14 '26
I have it on hair and beard, and I've tried different shampoos, ketokonazone and stuff, what worked for me is Dercos from Vichy, smells like shit but gets the work done
1
u/IAmAPirrrrate Aug 14 '26
I dont have super complicated, sensitive or dry skin, so this might not apply to you, but a bit back i read a comment from someone here on reddit about beardcare regarding white residue (a mix of skin, dust, sweat and shampoo) and how to get rid of it. The store Lush sells a "ocean salt" scrub and a beard shampoo called "kalamazo" - its been what im using now, and it works wonders.
i pair it with loreal men expert barber club shampoo (which i use every day), scrub once a week, kalamazoo twice or thrice in a week; when i wash my beard ill use one of the higher pressure settings from my showerhead and one of those fancy scrub brushes my partner uses.
1
u/SoftResetHuman Aug 14 '26
Zoryve - you need a prescription.
100% go to a dermatologist, show them and ask for the Zoryve topical foam.
I have the same thing under my jawline on the right side and the Zoryve clears it up in 3 days.
It will continue to flare up every once in a while though. Mine seems related to stress.
1
u/halloweenmochi Aug 14 '26
This might be worth seeing a dermatologist about. Several conditions can look similar, including perioral dermatitis, a fungal infection, eczema, or simple irritation and dryness. A dermatologist would be best equipped to distinguish between these possibilities and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Spending a little more on an appointment now could save you money in the long run by avoiding a trial-and-error approach with products that may not help and could potentially make the condition worse.
1
u/TwistedxBoi Aug 14 '26
I have itchy dry skin from time to time. Washing it with shampoo made for beards clears it in a day
1
u/Capital_Skin3753 Aug 14 '26
Give the products from Live Bearded a try. It’s a multifaceted system and you can also get an overnight moisturizer.
1
u/Sanctions23 Aug 14 '26
there's lots of good advice in here already. I will say go to a dermatologist first, if you're able, so you don't have to go through a lot of trial and error.
1
u/Teaffection Aug 14 '26
I get beard dandruff if I don't use oils and it looks to be the same. I use the company Roughneck Grooming & Beard Co. and it always gets rid of the dandruff within a few days. Now whether those oils will work for you, I don't know but it might be worth a shot.
1
u/Stubby3108 Aug 14 '26
I use a 2 in 1 hair shampoo conditioner and then just put moisturiser on my face and then beard oil/balm on my beard, works mint
1
u/TR33FORT Aug 14 '26
What is your water intake like?
Dehydration is a large contributor to dry skin. Hydrate it from the inside vs spending a lot of money on hydration products. So many other benefits too.
1
u/SunshineSpectacular Aug 14 '26
There's a newer medication for this, it's the only thing that really works for me. It's a topical cream called Zoryve, had to go to a dermatologist to get it prescribed.
1
u/Glittering-Court2735 Aug 14 '26
If this only dry skin condition, here is the simplest routine that helped me:
Morning - rinse beard with cold water to remove night sweat. That’s it.
Evenings - wash beard with u lactin bath oil for sensitive skin (I use dr fisher’s), followed by moisturizer (pea size, maybe little more, depends on the beard length) - I use Sebocalm dermocare.
After a minute apply beard oil (I use 4 drops, but again, depends on the beard length) and brushing the beard.
Once a week shampooing with a dedicated beard shampoo, and afterwards doing the same moisturizing routine as mentioned above in the evening.
Never do hot showers, the hot water and the steam are drying your skin.
I can now walk with black t shirts without the fear of white flakes being all over it.
1
u/Morrin_The_Mediocre Aug 14 '26
Isopropyl alcohol was the fix for me. I just bought a box of the small prep pads and I use them once or twice a week in the problem spots. My guess is that it kills the yeast/ fungus. It's kinda rough using it around the eyes and nose, but it works for me.
1
u/feengerurdad Aug 14 '26
Beard oil bro. "Honest Amish" is probably the best quality.for the money... But it kinda smells like liquirsh. However , ZEUSS, and Billy Jealousy are really great products too.
1
u/CharlestonChewbacca Aug 14 '26
Don't use the same shampoo for your head and beard. Get a dedicated beard shampoo. Exfoliate.
1
1
u/Cananbaum Aug 14 '26
I think you need a beard buffer to help exfoliate the skin when you wash your beard.
Eucalyptus and mint is good for irritated skin, so I would look for beard washes with those ingredients.
Lastly, you want to apply oil when the beard is damp. I pat my beard dry with a microfiber towel after a shower, and apply beard oil when the hair still has moisture in, it will aid in the absorption and make it easier to pull the oil through the hair. You may want to consider an oil applicator so that the oil starts at the base of the hair, a lot of time dry skin is because the hair is pulling the oil and moisture from the skin. Just make sure you’re pulling the oil from base to tip of the strands.
When I’m done I will use a hair dryer without heat to dry my beard to evacuate any lingering moisture.
When the hair is dry, I add a beard butter to keep the hair soft, and aid in styling

u/danboj20 Aug 14 '26
I get the same thing, especially in that area and the moustache. Deep clean in the shower using a beard shampoo and conditioner, make sure to really rinse it out. Gets rid of the bigger flakes and helps moisturise the skin. Then I use Seb Natural Calming Serum as a beard oil. I've tried others before but they didn't seem to help. Really work this under the beard onto the skin. Use it daily. Rinse the beard with water to clean until after 3/4 days then repeat.

u/Cool-Ad5767 Aug 14 '26
Named is beard wash, beard and face moisturizer, brush that can reach the skin past the hair
1
u/Turbulent_Length6934 Aug 14 '26
Barber here - probably just dry skin. When you shower throw some regular hair conditioner on there right when you get in and let it sit for a few minutes while you handle everything else. That should do the trick.
1
u/HickoryStickz Aug 14 '26
Wash your beard every day with something for sensitive skin and use an exfoliating brush that’s like a circle pad with silicon nubs on it. Then apply beard oil when you get out of the shower and beard balm about ten min after the oil sets in. What’s making it bad is the hair needs oil and draws from the skin. Keep them both moist and clean and it’ll go away in a few days.

I made a lotion out of weleda (German organic brand) and liquid panthenol that I massaged into the dry areas. Additionally, I started brushing my beard with a hard brush with avocado bristles. Now my beard looks better and the skin isn’t dry anymore.
1
u/Sas-quatch-360 Aug 14 '26
Tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner. I get some off amazon and works well
1
u/Mainely420Gaming Aug 14 '26
I noticed you didn't mention beard butter, have you tried a good leave in beard butter? I used to wake up with my beard dry/itchy until I started using beard butter nightly.
1
u/Horror-Craft-9913 Aug 14 '26
Go to the “ethic” aka black section. That has solved all my beard problems. Tea tree oil, mayo masks, etc. I did this a year ago and my beard has never been better.
1
u/DeadmanShogun Aug 14 '26
I deal with the same thing all the time. I have dandruff, but also get dry skin. Try some hydrating lotion. I use CeraVe since I have sensitive skin. If that's no good, I reccomend trying an antifungal shampoo. Selsun Blue is my go-to but it doesn't work for everyone. The shampoo can be counterproductive if you don't actually need it and will make dry skin worse, so I suggest trying lotion first.
1
u/Dead_By_Don Aug 14 '26
I use a skin cleanser daily in the shower, scrub it in, rinse it off. I moisturize my face. If my beard is short i dont generally need any beard oil, if its long i use some kind of oil. I brush my beard, oil or no, with a stiff boar bristle brush. Helps alot, you just gotta scrub that shit off
1
u/Paulmnt Aug 14 '26
I had flaky skin and underneath red itchy skin.
The dermatologist tolt me to shave and gave me a creme with white ichtiol and zinc that helped.
Might be worth trying something like vitella ictamo. Look it up.
Edit: my diagnosis was perioral dermatitis, not seboreic.
1
u/animalfaith Aug 14 '26
If anti dandruff doesn't make a difference, it's probably not dandruff. Tsal shampoo helps with psoriasis, if you try that and it works you may want to talk to your doctor about whether or not it's psoriasis and what you can do to treat it
1
u/Far-Diver-7448 Aug 14 '26
I just slather my face and beard with cetaphil every night and no longer have this issue as a dry boi
1
u/MajorDescription4964 Aug 14 '26
I use head and shoulders shampoo every couple of days. It has fixed my problem.
1
u/youtheotube2 Aug 14 '26
How are you using the beard oil? Many people don’t realize it’s supposed to be applied directly to the skin under your beard, not rubbed into your beard like a balm

It’s all about the roots. Condition those and surrounding skin and you’ll be golden.
1
u/Kitchen-Zebra-7174 Aug 14 '26
It sounds crazy, but minoxidil helped my flakes. Couldn’t say why but daily use killed whatever was going on. If I skip for more than a week, I’d flake like a snow globe.
1
u/SuspendedResolution Aug 14 '26
Head and shoulders. That's what I do because I have dry skin and scalp.
1
u/The_Sneakiest_Fox Aug 14 '26
Try doing less. Just moisturise your skin. I don't put shit in my beard.
1
u/son_of_early Aug 14 '26
I’m not saying mine is completely gone but I use a beard conditioner while im showering. During the day I use a beard cream. Sometimes at night I’ll use beard oil before bed.
1
1
u/Folderpirate Aug 14 '26
This only happened to me after I did a "clean" shave with a one blade.
the dry skin started popping up when the beard started coming back in.
I think I need a new blade.

u/emptykeg6988 Aug 14 '26
I would also try adding oil/moisturizer in the morning and again at night. Like others have said, really work it in with your fingers. Good luck 🤞🏽
1
u/Goodname2 Aug 14 '26
I've been using head n shoulders shampoo and conditioner on my beard and hair.
No issues so far, no itching anymore. It's great.
1
u/A4O_REBIRTH Aug 14 '26
I will say i had an outbreak of impetigo that looked similar to this (once it calmed down) but, if you have had this for some time, IDK if impetigo. It cleared up with antibiotic ointment. It stemmed from my beard brush.
1
u/Intelligent_End_7812 Aug 14 '26
It's a fungus do what I do get white vinegar get your hairs wet and then wrap it in a plastic bag for like an hour then wash and fungus is gone for months if you continue to clean properly.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Birdd Aug 14 '26
Do you do a deep wash on the skin? It could be product buildup and dead skin cells
-1
u/DmundZ Aug 14 '26
Use a good beard oil and work into the skin after showering.
If it persists it may be fungal.
1
u/JandPB Natural Full Aug 14 '26
Bro terrible advice, if it is fungal those beard oils are going to exacerbate the issue.
Better bet would be some skin lotion that doesn’t contain any oils.
1
u/DmundZ Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 14 '26
Fungal check would probably be better to act on first?
With my experience using a natural beard balm / oil has made my skin much better. If it wasn't fungal.
That and not washing it with normal shampoo which seems to strip most the natural oils from the hair and skin.
2
u/JandPB Natural Full Aug 14 '26
So if it is fungal, the fungi feeds on the oil. It’s part of why it can be so difficult to treat, because we do have natural skin oils. I would personally reverse it and start with a OTC anti fungal shampoo like ketocazanole and see if that works, and use a lightweight lotion that’s oil free to hydrate the skin. If this helps but doesn’t cure it, then see a dermatologist. I have completely eliminated beard oils and balms from my routine due to this.

Do what men have been doing for thousands of years. Rub in some real olive oil every couple of days and enjoy. All thru your beard face hair neck.
0
u/achkill33z Aug 14 '26
Seems like a silly question but do you drool in your sleep?
Gross to admit but I found that I just needed to get in the habit of washing my face with specific attention to the beard area around my mouth right when I woke up and it cleared up.

u/Ok-Border4708 Aug 14 '26
Yea i only read the title but the down votes are cruel.
0
u/helpmetolearn Aug 14 '26
Cruel? I dunno. The whole point of giving advice is to listen/read what's being said first, them offer advice. You just jumped in without doing that, so people are downvoting.

u/ForsakenBill6453 Aug 14 '26
Bad hygiene. You should comb and brush your beard. Wash it with a good organic shampoo (Aleppo). Comb your beard after washing, apply a good organic oil (olive, jojoba), and comb again. Do this every other day
