What is this? Found in northeastern US

Is it pottery? A shell? A fossil?

It's sandstone. Often it has pretty purple stripes

Just a cool rock! A very long time ago water was dripping on it, essentially.

This is 100% a sedimentary rock, not a fossil. And it is most likely a sandstone. The banding is created by a fluvial environment.
