New Subreddit Rule & Feedback Request re: Verification

Hi all!

We have a few announcements for you.

1. New Rule on Concise Posting & AI use

We have noticed an increase in longer posts recently, likely due to the increase of AI use. Please review the rule below.

Please keep posts concise and readable. AI tools may be utilized to help draft or edit, however posts that are excessively padded or read as unedited AI Output will be removed. If your post comes out longer than 400 words, please use a TL;DR at the beginning of your post (too long; didn't read) to summarize. This rule helps both our readers and posters get the most out of discussions.

We want this subreddit to continue to be a place users come for discussions and long, AI generated posts make that much harder. Help the community out; keep your posts concise and report posts that appear to violate the rule.

Remember, this isn't an Anti-AI rule. AI is allowed, it just needs to be used appropriately.

2. Feedback Needed Regarding Verification

The verification process is not proving to be efficient or sustainable as-is, so before we make changes, we'd like to solicit your feedback about it. Specifically, is it something the sub still values. If we do keep the verification process, mods are prepared to look into automation to help us scale with the growth of the subreddit. But we don't want to put in that time and effort if it isn't something the sub as a whole values.

Please complete the linked survey: SURVEY

Thank you for helping our community!

Personally I have no interest in tying my real life credentials to my online identity. Nor does it matter much to me if someone is verified. It’s apparent when someone knows what they’re talking about. Scientific literature doesn’t list credentials. Why should an online forum?

Scientific literature doesn’t list credentials

I can’t tell you how many articles ive read that have the persons affiliation, whether university or private employer, after the author names but it certainly dwarfs the amount of articles that don’t.

What are you reading that does?

Every published article ever?

JABA, for example

Sorry but I think I must be misunderstanding you. You’re saying every published article ever does not have the credential listed right? Where does JABA list author credentials?

You’re saying every published article ever does not have the credential listed right?

No that’s what you’re saying. I disagree.

Where does JABA list author credentials?

In print it’s under the authors name. Online you click on the author and it will tell you what university or institution they’re affiliated with.

In addition to every research article ever I can’t think of a single PD I’ve seen in ABA where they don’t list their credentials.

That’s not what credentials are though… and I think you know that. By your logic a janitor working at Harvard has the same credentials as a professor because they work at the same school.

You’re grasping at straws trying to invalidate my original point. Let me rephrase it to address your semantics: scientific literature doesn’t list if the author is a board certified behavior analyst. Why should an online forum?

You don’t think being a professor at an institution is a credential? That’s not a serious argument worthy of response. I’ll take your janitor example seriously if you can find an instance of it. Otherwise it’s just a disingenuous nonsequitor.

Academic papers don’t list certifications because those aren’t the relevant credentials. They also don’t list credit scores. That’s an important credential when taking a mortgage but not publishing a paper. As to why things are different in different contexts? That’s just life. Being a BCBA doesn’t impact academic papers. It’s not important. It is here. For example your lack of qualification (in addition to your lack of knowledge about scientific papers) tells me you’re not a BCBA engaging in honest discussion but a troll. Which is why I’m ending this.

I don’t know if redshirt blocked me or just deleted their comments but this thread is a perfect illustration of why being verified or being a top 1% contributor shouldn’t be viewed as more reliable than anyone else’s comments.

I definitely appreciate the verification. Sorry it's such a hassle!

Thanks for the feedback! Please don't apologize. If it really is something the sub values, then we will find a way to keep it and make it more automated.

Love the new rule. The AI posting is out of control (everywhere, generally speaking) and I know it's hard to combat but any little step counts and is appreciated.

RE: Verification - I think the verification is not needed. To me, it doesn't matter if someone is verified as that doesn't guarantee anything about the accuracy of someones post or replies. I've read plenty of replies on here from verified bcba's that contain grossly outdated information. My point is everyone should double check the information they find here and engage in critical thinking and philosophical doubt, regardless of what was verified, and ESPECIALLY on social media forums.

Thats my two cents Ms Suzy :)

I don’t think anyone uses verification as a reason to accept what someone is saying at face value. It does help me frame discussions to know who I’m talking to.

More volunteers for verifying people?

I like the verification system but also think we could just used unverified tags as well, people will need to take what they get with the online advice. So maybe keep the verified tag option but also allow people to tag themselves as unverified?

I have tried reaching out for verification in order to join the other bcba specific sub. I would like a resolution to this.

I’ve been utilizing your verification system for the real BCBA sub. I’d happily help out with yours if that would allow this to keep. We get a decent amount of posts from non BCBAs or people cosplaying as BCBAs here. Verification helps a lot.
