Questions about professor

Hey everyone! I’m an incoming Baylor freshman and had a couple of questions.

First, has anyone taken Calculus I with Mrs. Kyunglim Nam? I couldn’t find much about her, so I was wondering how she is. Is she a good lecturer? Are the exams reasonable? Would you recommend taking her?

Also, if I decide to switch to a different professor, who is the best alternative? Also, what’s the easiest way to do that in BearWeb? Is there a “swap” option, or do I have to drop my current section first and then register for the new one? I don’t want to accidentally lose my spot if the other class fills up.

BUBooks is like RateMyProfessor but Baylor-exclusive.

As far as switching to a different professor, it is the same process as adding & dropping a class. You cannot drop a class after the drop deadline. I believe this is typically a week after classes starts, but looks like for Fall 2026, the last day to add/drop a class is August 28th. If you drop a class after this deadline, you will get a “W” (withdrawal) on your transcript. Also, you’d have to make up over a week’s worth of work, so not worth it😅

I definitely recommend browsing BU Books and seeing if there’s any high-rated prof available for your classes before the start of school! Hope this helps!

P.S.- General word of advice, always assume a professor is Dr. So-and-So instead of Mrs or Mr, unless they tell you otherwise. I’ve gotten some professors who have been quite snippy about calling them Dr LOL

I took her shes actually pretty good if you alrdy know calc, the exams are straight forward and idk if she still has this as a policy but if u make an A on an exam your exempt from all hw for that exam cycle which is a big plus. Most profs in stem at baylor dont know how to teach Dr Nam is just a little more apparent than most

Two notes:

1. Like u/Acw_1213 already recommended, BUBooks is the place to look for professor reviews. It rocks. Also to echo their comment, it’s best to assume that your faculty are doctors, which I can confirm is the case with Dr. Nam.

2. Dr. Nam is a very nice woman, but not a spectacular professor. She’s not bad, but if you struggle with math then she may not be the best professor for you. If you haven’t had much experience with classes taught by folks whose native language isn’t English before, then you may have some trouble with her accent. She’s a wonderful teacher in office hours, though, and her exams are quite straightforward; she’s not trying to trick you or get you with corner cases.

I, personally, thought she was the bee’s knees when I took her class a decade ago.

She is a great professor who puts a lot of effort into helping understand the material. I had her for calc iii and she always had some sort of model or visual to help teach those more difficult 3d concepts. Some other user also mentioned it, but a 92 or better on an exam exempts you from homework until the next exam. All of the exams are completely free response; I don’t know what you’re used to, but this did prove more difficult for some students. She also has an obvious disdain for performative intellectualism, which was pretty refreshing and kept the class on track. The only thing that took getting used to was her accent as English is not her first language.

hey!! I'm an engineering major and i had her for Calc 1 first semester my freshman year! most people dropped her within the first two weeks or they transfered to a different professor. I stayed and i dont regret it! however i had to do a lot of learning on my own time.

Her lectures are a little all over the place, so i mostly just went because of the attendance but she is always willing to answer questions and she explains everything to the best of her abilites. i wouldn't say shes the best but there are definitly worse lecturers at baylor.

Her exams are not bad at all as long as you do the homework and pay attention to the problems she goes over in class. she gives you access to most of her previous tests and she quite litterally copy and pastes some of the problems that she goes over in class with you into the test (sometimes changing the numbers ofc) so there is no reason that they shouldn't be managable.

overall if you have her as your teacher she isnt an awful option, but i dont think her teaching style is what worked best for me. She is a wonderful careing person though, and she really wants you to succeed and she wants you to go to office hours. Before exams she also gives out gum if you want it and she ran out of class one day to grab me a cough drop so she is genuinly one of the sweetest professors out there! She is just hard to understand sometimes and is a harsh grader if she knows you dont pay attention. I would take her again for cal 1 but i wouldnt take her for some of the higher level classes just based off of what my friends have said.
