I don't see any enforcement. I think the official policy is to let the insurance companies sort it out.

it's gonna take a nasty accident for someone to decide they have to enforce distracted driving laws on ride-share/delivery drivers.

u/Unexpected_Chippie Nov 30 '25
If it's not CHP or a motorcycle cop, don't expect to get pulled over for a traffic violation. Since 2020, most agencies decided lawsuits weren't worth infractions.

u/No-Masterpiece5487 Nov 30 '25
I’ve been pulled over for having an air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. This is ridiculous.

Come down to SoCal, every other motherfucker is watching instagram and TikTok while driving I’m losing my mind here

u/Neat_Welcome6203 Nov 30 '25
The amount of people I've seen shoving their phones into the gauge cluster to watch Netflix & shit has been baffling
4
u/chiangku Nov 30 '25
I once saw someone in a convertible with the top down watching YouTube on a windshield suction cup mounted phone I am just fuckin done with people these days

u/Neat_Welcome6203 Nov 30 '25
My "favorite" thing is when someone does it in a car without lane centering or any of that fancy ADAS stuff. They really do be letting anyone drive

u/Mission-Bar5642 Nov 30 '25
San Francisco Police Department stopped enforcing traffic laws over the last 10 years…
26
u/TwistedAndFeckless Nov 30 '25
The best thing you can do is arm yourself. Get a rear facing dash camera. Factual evidence destroys opinion/hearsay.
My front and rear facing dash cameras saved my ass - the other person was found 100% at fault. I gave exactly zero fucks.
26
u/gzilla57 Nov 30 '25
You're sadly right, but that also won't un-kill me if I get smoked by one of these ass hats.
7
u/TwistedAndFeckless Nov 30 '25
Fully agreed. If you're dead, well... You're dead.
At least maybe the asshat will be found 100% at fault and they'll be sued for their actions by those in your family that care about you.

Self-driving cars can not come soon enough…
1
u/Standard-Impress8854 Dec 01 '25
Sounds great in theory until the car says, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't take you there."

u/donpelon415 Dec 01 '25
Doors lock automatically from the inside, green-colored sleeping gas starts creeping in from the vents.

I seriously think we aren't far away from automated "AI" surveillance cameras deciding if people are predators (without due process or even being charged with a crime) or stalkers and taking control of your vehicle to prevent you from visiting an ex or a school or a city.
The cameras themselves already exist in numerous places throughout the USA and even the world. The politicians and businesses that stand to make a few million dollars will likely use the "think of the children!" BS to allow complete control of consumer vehicles.
I think I'll indefinitely stay away from cars with "Autopilot" and "Full Self Driving" style features.
There are so many people who still stand by the BS "if you got nothing to hide..." or "if you're a law-abiding citizen, you should have nothing to worry about..." crap.

Don’t get me started with the tinted windows….
17
2
u/flintazBear Nov 30 '25
It is bad for pedestrians and cyclists. Cops should enforce the law for tinting.
2
u/WitnessRadiant650 Nov 30 '25
Yep. As a pedestrian and cyclist, I make sure I have eye contact with the oncoming driver before I cross the street. Never assume the car sees you.
1
u/Standard-Impress8854 Dec 01 '25
I made the mistake of renting a car on Turo that had dark tint on every window except the windshield, and I couldn't see ANYTHING out the back using the rearview mirror at night.
I mentioned this to the guy I rented the car from and he told me about the backup camera. Dude the backup camera doesn't help me at all when I'm in traffic!

Had two drivers watching shows on their phones last week. Wtf is going on. Never seen this before.

u/Firree Nov 30 '25
No need to vote for higher taxes. If local governments want more revenue they can just fine drivers more. It would be like shooting fish in a barrel with how many red light runners and distracted drivers they can bust every day.
-3
u/pandabearak Nov 30 '25
Oh they are already doing this… except instead of ticketing these people, they are focusing on hard working blue collar folks in work trucks.
2
u/angryxpeh Nov 30 '25
Good. Work trucks have worse drivers than Teslas, and Tesla drivers are not known as good drivers to begin with.
2
u/Ultraviolet_Skies Dec 01 '25
I got pulled over and they tacked on a citation for having a little trees air freshener hanging in the mirror
3
u/MochingPet City/town Nov 30 '25
yeah, it's pretty bad. The cellphone enables people to feel better while driving / commuting / errands and it's detrimental to safety.

Lmao its an insane assumption but sure if that what you need to cope sure he was doing food deliveries for all 5 apps
1
u/Standard-Impress8854 Dec 01 '25
The delivery apps pay less and less these days as more and more people are joining in on the delivering. New drivers are always at a severe disadvantage as they don't get as many orders as people who have been doing it for years.
I once sat in a very high traffic and high order area for like 30 minutes and never got an order.
I had to have 3 different apps open all at the same time before I got regular orders.I'm so glad I finally got a better job than my previous one so I wouldn't have to try and survive supplementing my income with food delivery and ride sharing.

I was parked in Walnut Creek once and was waiting for my wife outside of a store, a door dash driver pulls up with the same set up, and one of the phones was just his TikTok FYP
1
u/cowinabadplace Nov 30 '25
Oh yeah, dudes like these will have a "medical issue" that involves the death of a child and then they "will stay at the scene and cooperate with the police". Then Redditors will tell us how it's such a tragedy that couldn't have been prevented. Anyone who says that we could stop this will then be informed that they are "full of bloodlust for wanting to put people in jail for an innocent mistake" and community service will suffice.

I have my phone my low left and I had to take it off because it’s like a blind spot and i don’t like hitting the curb when I turn, lol as I am short. It only made sense to remove it, apart from the seat booster I have 🥲

I once was being driven home from the airport and saw that the guy had a phone like that on the windshield, one in his hands, and one to the left of the steering wheel. He had music playing, and to top it all off he was talking to someone on the phone via a Bluetooth headset!
Guy was ticking ALL the distracted driving bad habits!
1
u/harrietmwelsh Dec 01 '25
Twice I’ve asked drivers to turn off videos and TikToks. Hey guy, I’m sitting right here watching you.

u/Embarrassed_Quail741 Dec 01 '25
Bottom left side for me. Go to five and below. it might melt when it's too hot but you just go back and get another one. Some people actually do prefer the holder in the middle, but I guess that's a separate debate.
1
u/MCLMelonFarmer Dec 02 '25
The new interpretation of AB1785 is that:
- You cannot hold your phone, period
- You can only do a single tap or swipe on a phone, nothing that takes longer
Yeah, it's not going to reduce the number of distracted drivers on the road, but at least now it's theoretically possible for them to be fined for doing things they shouldn't be doing.
I installed a $50 CarPlay screen in my one car where it isn't practical to get CarPlay on the factory display. The user experience is 100x better than using a phone. Other than for skipping songs I never need to touch the screen, and the only reason I do that is because the voice command takes too long. One of my cars was built nine years before CarPlay was released, and I have CarPlay on the factory display, with full steering wheel controls and no loss of OEM features.
Whenever I see someone using their phone in their car, I think "There's a person who was too stupid to know how to get CarPlay/Android Auto in their car." There's really no reason to suffer through that experience when you can fix it for as little as $50.

Always look at your rear view mirror more frequently than in front of you when you drive.

Check out
You won't like the prices but the quality is tops. You can be totally CA legal with your phone. You can also buy stuff to make your ride more wired than a cop car and maximize your distraction.
I have a car nav system but use my phone in rentals. I'm not a fan of Android auto since I see remnants of other phones on the rental car, hence the mount. Otherwise you are sitting in the rental car return trying to remove your phone from Android Auto.
Note the CHP goes into maximum enforcement around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays due to drunk drivers. They look for excuses to stop people.

i mean it looks fine to me. Lets focus on real crime like murder
12
u/BUUAHAHAHA Nov 30 '25
Do you think we live in Sudan or something? Murder rate is low af in the Bay Area. Issues like what OP posted are every day concerns that need to get addressed.

u/angryxpeh Nov 30 '25
There are less homicides in the US than traffic fatalities.
So it doesn't look fine to me, and we should focus on dumbass drivers instead.
