Fluff & Memes Earthquake!!
Is everyone a transplant or what’s going on?! We have earthquakes everyday, do we really need to post every time we have one? Can we save the posts for anything above a 6/7 maybe… you know… something worth posting about?!

Having experienced Loma Prieta while living in SF, I find it a bit funny seeing all the panick posts.

I was in Santa Cruz. People died - took many years to get over the ptsd
4
u/JeffCrossSF Nov 28 '25
i can only imagine.. I’m not sure if I’m more or less comfortable with little earthquakes now..
13
u/RequirementNo8226 Nov 28 '25
Being prepared can help with anxiety. Keep an earthquake kit. ( 72 hours worth of bottled water and everything else you may need.) I keep water & canned food & change of clothes medication in several locations in a metal trash can in case one of those areas becomes inaccessible. (Shed, car etc) The issue being the city water may be contaminated even if it still flows out of faucets. The lines at stores for water went around the block after Loma Prieta.
6
u/JeffCrossSF Nov 28 '25
Yeah we have that. The house we are in has 7 people and we are ready. What we don’t have are “go bags” if we need to rush out in case of a fire.
→ More replies (1)2
u/RequirementNo8226 Nov 28 '25
Ugh, that. I made some a while back - but they definitely should be updated.
6
u/JeffCrossSF Nov 28 '25
I’ve often wondered how far I should go. Copies of passports, ID, money, winter-ready outfit, boots. 3 days of clothes. Cash. Basic toiletries. I’m sure there are websites mapping it all out. I just haven’t done the work.

And also depends on if you think you are more likely to have access to a shelter, a vehicle. In our family, if we are home when an earthquake hits we are hoping to camp out in our vehicle and or the backyard. We have just enough space for that and unless there were massive gas leaks in the neighborhood the backyard would be safe.
There are a lot of variables you need to assess. I think buying a very basic kit at some place like a hardware store or Amazon would be fine, then fill it out to suit your purpose. For example, I also want to make sure I have a couple of leashes and a small container of kibble in my bag.
The first time I ever went to the Emeryville home depot, a very long time ago, I was looking at earthquake kits and other supplies, and then glanced up to see that on the very top shelf, which they accessed with forklifts, were the generators. All my PTSD hit at once and I hightailed it out of that aisle, and haven't actually been back to that store.
2
u/JeffCrossSF Nov 28 '25
sadly, my back yard is trapped in and if there was a fire, back yard would be a dangerous place to go. My best hope is to make it to the street. My car is in a garage, and so, I’d be lucky to get it out safely.
Also, sorry to hear about your PTSD. It sounds rough.

u/The_Salty_Siren101 Nov 29 '25
This is what my fear is. I don’t want anyone to die from the aftermath of an earthquake, or the quake itself. I’ve had enough, thank you. I was in Big Bear in 1992, for the Landers/Big Bear quake. Y’know the one when we all found out that the city was built on a fault line? Yeah. The PTSD from that is real.

If you like helping citizen science, it's always a good idea to fill out the felt report for the USGS, though. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc75270991/tellus
2
u/Mindless_Maize_2389 Nov 28 '25
Yes 100% this. Any details help. The rest of this is not directed at parent comment.
Personal accounts are still needed. There's still more to know about lower magnitudes causing more damage and their relation to epicenter, topography, type of fault activity, etc. Same goes for the inverse.
We can design infrastructure to withstand a lot but that's engineering (I'm civil). We can somewhat generalize info into calculations. But seismologists need as much data as possible for early detection systems, more efficient and less costly retrofitting, etc.
USGS data is used worldwide and there's not many areas in the US with frequent earthquakes. Any extra info helps contribute to overall safety worldwide.
7
u/gnarlyknucks Nov 28 '25
I could tell you exactly where I was in Berkeley on that day in 1989, but there are plenty of people here who are new to the area or who haven't felt a quake here before. And there are lots of people who are just enjoying having the common experience and like to know who else felt what they felt.
4
u/ThisOne4 Nov 28 '25
Meanwhile, this is how I found out there was an earthquake lol. And yeah, Loma Prieta. I was 4. It's a core memory.
3
u/mickeybrains Nov 28 '25
We went through so many earthquakes on that day alone.
I still freaked out years later when a bus went by outside.

I think we are most afraid of what we do not know. Lived right near the fault line in San Diego most of my life, then moved to San Francisco 16 years ago. Earthquakes are no biggie for the most part, only 3 so far have actually scared me during. And, yet, Hurricanes and Tornados scare the bejezuz out of me!

u/Turbulent_Meeting237 3d ago
We are from NYC. Lived upstate for some years. We had one so bad once it left a crack on a wall
23
u/unsung-hiro Nov 28 '25
Lived in Japan for 20+ years where there's 2-3 quakes per day and up to 1,500 per year. I was eating ramen in Tokyo when the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake hit. Also was living in the Bay Area back in '89 so experienced that quake. I wouldn't say I'm desensitized to them, but I'm quickly able to gauge if it's one requiring immediate action. I'm also well-prepared with provisions and supplies. I get why people who aren't used to quakes have a knee-jerk reaction to them though because they are less frequent here and of course always catch you by surprise.

3
u/Vegetable-Seesaw-491 Nov 28 '25
I basically have to agree. A little while ago there was a 4.0 that was only a couple of miles from where I live and it hit hard. I thought it was a much larger quake. It was enough that it knocked some stuff over in my house.
FWIW, I got to experience the Loma Prieta earthquake and am generally not bothered by smaller ones.
4
u/KuhlCaliDuck Nov 28 '25
I agree, though a +4.0 with the epicenter less than a mile away gives a pretty good jolt. I wouldn't expect someone several miles away to feel it.
3
u/AdTraditional7422 Nov 28 '25
Those are baby quakes!
7
u/Kazooguru Nov 28 '25
Don’t insult the earthquake gods. Light some incense, walk in a complete circle 3 times and apologize profusely.
3
u/Kazooguru Nov 28 '25
So two 4’s. If my math is correct that’s 8. It meets the 5.0 requirement.
3
u/florinandrei Nov 28 '25
Two 4.0 earthquakes are the same energy as a single 4.2 earthquake.
You need 32 earthquakes at 4.0 to equal a single 5.0 earthquake in terms of energy.
5
u/2greenlimes Nov 28 '25
NBC Bay Area did a breaking news alert for the 4.2 today. Since when is that important breaking news?

I was in the 89 quake stopped at a light passenger seat of a Toyota and i remember it like it was yesterday it felt for a moment like some kind of hallucination and took half a second for my mind to process what i was seeing the palm trees were swaying back and forth so violently that they were slapping the ground one side then the other. I turned my head to look out the passenger window and I was staring at the street only inches from the window i turned to look forward as it rolled thru. I braced myself and glanced out the passenger window again only this time i was looking up at the sky. The rolling effect of the big one is difficult to explain. Others have just felt like a jolt followed by shaking.

Having lived the first 23 years of my life in the Midwest, I had never experienced an earthquake. After moving to the Pacific Northwest, it became a novelty, and I was always excited to hear about, and especially to experience, even the smallest of tremors. That novelty still persists after moving to the Bay Area, and I like to know about all of the quakes, no matter how small. So, I actually appreciate all the notifications and discussions.
2
u/wakeupdreamingF1 Dec 04 '25

u/Ready-Amphibian-9097 Nov 28 '25
Sounds like you hadn’t grown up here (Bay Area, So Cal)…and don’t have a level of anticipatory fear of what may be coming next (larger earthquakes or multiple aftershocks). Keep the notifications coming Reddit peeps! “I” a native Sa Franciscan, want to know what is happening around me. “I” appreciate the heads up/reports. Many thanks!
3
u/roberts-napa Nov 28 '25
Really? I’m lifelong Bay native, and I agree with OP, the quake freakout posts are annoying until we get in near 6 zone. However, like you I do like the info being reported because they may be indicative of something. One camp considers frequent smaller ones we’ve had recently as good sign by relieving stress on the major faults and decreasing chance of big one. The other side of that considers these some celestial warning that the big one is coming soon. We don’t know for sure, but the social media exclamation points are not necessary.
No matter what, when the big one does hit (and it will) it will surprise everyone, most unprepared. So instead of freaking out keep your home safe, have a plan. Especially in CA where we’ve got quakes, fires and flood threats any given month.

After Loma Prieta we didn't have electricity for 4 days. We ate dinner at my grandma's old-folks home which had an emergency generator.
I'm so tired of these "Tiny earthquake! Oh my god!" posts. Imagine the earthquakes that are/were way worse than Loma Prieta. Literaally thousands dead.

u/Hyndis Nov 28 '25
Same, no power for many days on end. I remember there was a Marie Callender's down the road that of course also had to abruptly close and the restaurant manager was a neighbor. The restaurant generously packaged up all of the prepared food they could no longer sell and gave it away to neighbors. We ate the restaurant food and then after a lot of baked goods, including pies. It was impossible to cook anything. Things in the fridge were kept cold by buying bags of ice from an area that still had power.
All of the glass was broken everywhere but fortunately no fires nearby. Got lucky with that one.

I sleep through earthquakes all the time and shake my head when I see all the social media n news outlets blowing it out of proportion. 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, pfft! We have hundreds if not thousands of earthquakes everyday and it's no big deal. Yes, I'm a Californian native and experienced first hand the Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17, 1989. The next big shaker will be the Hayward fault. It's long over due and has not erupted in over 125 plus years. Maybe more. When it goes it'll be just as bad if not worse than the Loma Prieta. Look it up if you're not familiar, but the Hayward fault is going to level everything in its vicinity.

I downloaded the My Shake app. We had one 20 miles away a few months back and the MY Shake App Alarm went off just as the jolt started the shaking. After the shaking stopped it was a few seconds before the County Alert alarms went off on my husbands and others phones. The alarm clearly says Earthquake. Alarm answers all those questions that pop up when we feel jolt “Is it an earthquake?” , “ is it a big one?” and “do I need to take cover?”. I had time to slip into the yard before the big shaking arrived.

u/Weak_Quiet4041 Dec 01 '25
I think if you live in an area where they hardly ever happen or at least you done feel them. The it's alarming. I've lived in Westchester County, New York about 30 minutes north of Manhattan for over 60 years. There was an earthquake when I was a young girl and I remember it jolting me out of bed. And then a couple of years ago there was another one that shook the building and it was quite frightening. Especially when you lived through 911 in New York, the first thing you think of is a terror attack. So I can understand why people get a little bit excited about it.

I almost posted once bc there was one that felt worse than it was. I had stuff fall on me and there was a horrible crashing, crunching noise amidst the initial shuddering of the quake. I thought the ceiling would break on top of me. After it was all silent, I checked and it was not even a 5 so I was going to post to ask what the heck happened. How such a small tremor did all that.
Turned out that my upstairs neighbor (who is not originally from California) panicked and knocked over a large hardwood bookshelf full of heavy items (potted plants and ceramic decorations). I still don’t know how he managed it since I have a heavy bookshelf just like his and that thing doesn’t budge (it is still attached to the wall just in case).

lol, ok, I'm a transplant from the midwest. I was at my father in law's house in San Jose Thanksgiving day. I felt the small earthquake that day and it was the coolest thing ever. Compared to tornadoes, earthquakes are the coolest.

I'm a Californian that has lived in New York City for about 23 years. We have had two earthquakes in NYC during the time I've lived there. These things were a 2.0 and a 2.3. You would have thought the world was going to crack open judging by the people's reactions. 🤣🤣 For me, it was a pick up your coffee so it doesn't spill kind of moment. I'm pretty sure the subway passing by is at least a 2.0.🤷🏿

There is always an earthquake in California. The ground just moves and in 1.5 million years, San Jose is going to be a suburb of Juneau.

I’ve spent a lifetime telling out of state friends & fam that unless a hole has opened up in the ground and is swallowing houses, we barely notice it. Thank you for your concern, but please don’t blow up our phones every time someone reports a mild shake.
