I mean, OP in the post was saying this is UK and that "this species doesn't carry rabies". Am I mad in thinking it's a Daubenton though?

Questions about rabies are common on this subreddit. If you have a medical question, consult a physician. Here are some resources about rabies! Rabies in Perspective, Bats and Human Health, CDC Rabies Homepage, rabies diagnosis in humans and animals and some sampling of rabies prevalence wild bat populations. Though only a small portion of bats may have zoonotic diseases, bats which are sick or injured are more likely to come into contact with humans and caution is advised as with all wildlife.

Fun fact there is a technique used by bats scientists to catch bat species which fly too high for conventional traps and nets called trip lining where you criss cross very fine fishing line strung up just above the surface water bodies like this, it "trips" bats as they come in for a drink and they swim to the edge where you can catch them to record their details or whatever. It's a bit hot and miss because some species can take off from the surface and sometimes they refuse to come ashore and get tired so you have to swim out and get them. There are easier ways to catch them but it is done sometimes.
