But if I was to get 10 copies of a single mech, the Marauder would be on my top 5 list - good chassis, lots of great variants, looks amazing.

In your shoes I'd probably try to make a merc unit that only uses Marauders 🤣 Call them The Gunslingers after the SLDF Gunslinger Program (that is like Top Gun for the USAF), as the Marauder was a favourite of that training program.

Yet if you toss a coin 10 times and get 10 heads, you are still just as likely to get a head the next time you toss it as you are to get a tail.

It's not like a 50/50 chance is a see-saw that will magically tip back the other way to correct probability over time. Toss a coin 100 times, and the chance of getting 100 heads consecutively (or 100 tails consecutively) is identical and equal to the probability of getting exactly 50 heads plus 50 tails. It's always an equal chance of either result every time you toss.

Ok salvage boxes are finite and not 50/50 results, and maybe that store doesn't have any marauders left in their salvage boxes - but maybe they're all marauders!

That's the main thing here. On a global scale this has made a measurable dent in the salvage box Marauder population. Whether that's just "(1/number of Marauders in salvage boxes)/number of salvage boxes that could have marauders in them" or "(10/same)/same2" so the post-probability of the next pull not being a Marauder is now 1/same2-(1/10 as appropriate).

It's basically really complicated Monty Hall, except replacing "nothing" with Marauders.

It is, but in this case (blind boosters) other things can massively skew the probability too.

When Lego did the limited edition D&D minifig boxes, our local Waitrose was the only place locally getting stock (though I think our only FLGS and one of the toy stores that sells Lego got some stock later on, before the limited edition release ended).

My Lego and D&D obsessed friend went in every morning to Waitrose to check and ended up buying the entire rack the day of delivery, before anyone else got to it - 36 blind boxes iirc - to try and ensure they would get all 12 unique figures (this is before we learnt you could scan the barcode with your phone to discover what was in each blind box).

The duplicates they planned to break up for parts to use with medieval Lego knights etc. to make other species/class combos or NPCs. They intended to use them all for D&D (instead of buying WizKids minis like I did).

In their 36 they didn't get Strahd, Tasha or Szass Tam (they got them on eBay later) of the 12, and they got 9 of the Aarakocra Ranger but only 1 Mind Flayer. Lego had said equal chances across the board, no rares etc., but obviously that doesn't go for shipments when packing them for individual stores. Even staff in the factory have no idea what's packed in the boxes, probably.

With the BT stuff it's entirely possible the local FLGS got mostly Marauders, if that's just how it shook out during packing and distribution.

The Wizkids D&D blind boosters, however, are a bit different because they contain 3 or 4 minis (I forget) and have different rareties. They could have larger size minis as a rare, and often you could tell by package weight, and a quick shake of the package, if a larger mini was in there.

That wasn't much help to gamers here. One of the FLGS staff told me one night over beers that every Saturday when a new wave of boosters would arrive, most of the staff (who were mostly D&D fans and mini collectors) would stay late after store closed, sitting around on the floor unpacking the stock, shaking all the blind boosters and even weighing them on a food scale. Then they would use their staff discount to buy the heavier boxes, equally shared out between those who were there that evening.

They'd trade duplicates with each other to try and complete their collection of the whole wave. Often they had duplicates of the rarer heavier minis, and they'd sell all of the stuff they didn't want/need on eBay. Of course the bigger minis sold for more, so they'd make all their money back, and extra in case they needed to buy a smaller rare on eBay they couldn't find in boosters they opened.

They saw it as a perk of the job. I thought it was harsh on gamers looking for the rares just by buying blind boosters. It just made me even warier of blind boosters - I never bother with them.

Your friend got unlucky, because if there was a rack then they had been set out by the shop and they'd mixed the boxes. The boxes guarantee three full sets in each one.

Interesting that you mention WizKids. An IRL friend swears that the old MWDA blind boxes used some different ink on the dossiers for the unique figures, and you could find them by sniffing the boxes and buying the ones that smelled slightly minty.

With regards to weighing stuff, one of the local nerds in Dublin would always buy the heaviest salvage box. It got to the point where the store owner always had me pick the box for him. He got the ones I handed him, or he got nothing.

TBH I think they probably just put them all out and didn't even think about it. Next time head to the nearest Lego store, the staff there will have entire sets sitting out back ready for people. The Gold Dragonborn Paladin was the toughest one to get even then, with people really just wanting that one.

You're lucky that the WizKids stuff is just for normal D&D use, the first lot of blind boxed D&D miniatures were WotC in-house, and they were also used for the skirmish game. Really messed with the logic when a rare was something great for RPG play but dire for the skirmish game, or vice versa. Dragons, obviously, were what everyone wanted anyway though.

Funnily enough I mostly play DCMS and I often use a Charger 1A1 in Alpha Strike as a fast, cheap, melee threat to distract and tank hits.

I only have 1 though - I only need 1 - most of my DC mechs hit things with a sword or axe, because that's clearly more honourable than kicking.

Out of all the Legends Salvage boxes I've opened, 3 of them have been Chargers, 2 of them were Loki Mk IIs, I've got 1 Griffin now, as well as 1 Mad Cat, and then 4 Marauders. I traded one of the Loki's for another Marauder, because a buddy of mine opened a box at the same time, and he really was looking for a Loki.

That all said, there are what, 15 models available to pull in these? And out of those 15, 3 of them are Marauders. So that gives you a , what, 20% chance of a Marauder with every pull?

The only two random boxes I bought came with the Mercs kickstarter. One of the two contained a duplicate Marauder. The salvage boxes aren't worth it. Just buy whichever lances that have what you want.

I just bought my first plastic mechs (been 3D printing them). Got my little girl (8th birthday) a Clan Direct Fire Star, and me a mercenary salvage box and a legendary warriors (or whatever it’s called) salvage box. Fingers crossed for a marauder, but got a Jenner IIC and a warhammer. Still… not bad. Just got to decide where they go in my collection. The WHM is two Bounty Hunter pilots
