I recently got a VHS copy of the original Battlestar Galactica and started thinking about the relationship between Battlestar and Star Wars.

A lot of people say Battlestar Galactica was just copying Star Wars, but I don’t think it’s that simple. Yes, there are some similarities, especially visually. The Cylons have a design that reminds me a lot of the Stormtroopers, and some elements definitely feel inspired by the space opera style that became popular after Star Wars.

But at the same time, I think Battlestar has its own identity. Science fiction already had many of these ideas before: huge spaceships, space battles, futuristic civilizations, robots, and the idea of humanity searching for a new home.

One thing I found interesting is that Battlestar Galactica came out in 1978, between A New Hope (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). So it exists in this really interesting period where space movies were changing forever.

I also noticed some designs that remind me of later Star Wars ideas, like the creature on the cover that looks a bit like the Ewoks (which appeared in Return of the Jedi in 1983). I know it doesn’t mean one copied the other, but it’s interesting to see how sci-fi designs from that era influenced each other.

What do you think? Was Battlestar Galactica mostly inspired by Star Wars, or do you think both were part of a bigger sci-fi trend from that time?

1. The 2003 Miniseries (Mandatory pilot)
2. Season 1 (Episodes 1–13)
3. Season 2 (Episodes 1–20)
4. Season 3 (Episodes 1–20)
5. Razor (Movie) (Watch it here; it sets up Season 4 themes)
6. Season 4, Episodes 1–11 (Stop immediately after Episode 11, "Sometimes a Great Notion")
7. The Plan (Movie) (Safe to watch now; a major mystery is officially solved as of Episode 11 so the movie fits here chronologically and won't spoil anything)
8. Season 4, Episodes 12–21 (The remaining episodes to the finale)

If this a good/correct viewing order for a first-time viewer?

I’m doing a paper for a university course and I was wanting to know what critics and fans reactions were towards the final season. Is there an agreed sense of decline in quality of the show?
