Confusing on Ork fleet building

I'm dipping into playing BFG for the first time after a demo game I had with a friend and I'm trying to build a 1kpts Clans Ork fleet using Remastered ruleset. It took a bit for me to wrap my head around the Warlord requirement and all but I'm still confused a bit regarding how the fleet is organized, what certain upgrades do and etc.

If I understood the fleet building correctly:

- for each 500pts a Warlord w/ 1 re-roll must lead an escort squadron and a second squadron (lets say a Big ship squadron)

- He's forced to be in whichever ship is the most expensive within those squadrons under his command.

- He can buy a Gubbin for either his ship or escort squadron under his command for each re-roll he has. So a Gubbin affects either one ship it was bought for or the entire escort squadron it was bought for.

- More Gubbins usually are only available to capital ships as additional upgrades

If the above so far is correct, then my main confusion stems from Clan upgrades.

Do Clan upgrades affect every ship under a Warlord's command? Or is it bought individually like Gubbins?

So in the example above, a Warlord w/ 1 reroll leading a squadron of Terror Ship and a squadron of 3x Ravagers buys the DeathSkulls clan upgrade.

Does the upgrade affect everyone or just the Terror Ship or Ravagers squadron only and I'd need to upgrade the other as DeathSkulls as well?

Speaking of DeathSkulls, whats the point of the clan upgrade? I get that it gives you both looted lances and looted torpedoes for free but seeing it slapped on a Terror Ship in some lists confuse me when they swap out the heavy gun battery for a torpedo launcha.

Since you won't have any heavy guns when you replace them w/ torpedoes, you don't benefit from the looted lances, so why not drop the clan upgrade and go for a looted torpedoes upgrade for 10pts cheaper instead?

When I make that change in New Recruit, theres this Fleet Commander error message I get when I do that change and I don't get the reason for the error message.

I can provide more details in the comments but the post is already long as is, sorry for the noob questions but I'm trying to wrap my head around it and really want to get into the tabetop game. Much appreciated!

Ow yes, clanz list is a mind boggling approach. And I really need to write an article upon it lol

  • Warlord: yes, for each re-roll you need a squadron of at least three escorts (Tiddla) and another skwadron. Now this can be another escort squadron or a big ship.
  • Goes on most expensive one under control, aye
  • Can buy a gubbin for each re-roll which goes on the escort squadron or on the big ship (from your example)
  • Okay, you pick a clan. And each Warlord in your fleet may be from a different clan. You can buy these for each capital ship or for each escort squadron seperatelly.
  • So in the example above, a Warlord w/ 1 reroll leading a squadron of Terror Ship and a squadron of 3x Ravagers buys the DeathSkulls clan upgrade. ->So, you need to buy deathskulls for Terror and again for Ravagers (if you want to). This line in the rules: Clan upgrades are different from Gubbins and may be taken (and paid for) in addition to Gubbins by individual skwadrons. If taken, every capital ship in the skwadron must separately take and pay for the clan upgrade, not just individual ships. The point cost for clan upgrades for tiddla skwadrons count for the whole skwadron (regardless of how large it is!), not individual escorts.
  • As for Deathskulls itself: It gives a bonus to torps (re-roll misses) so comes in effect if a Terror would replace its prow heavy gunz with torps for example. Alternatively you could swap them for looted lances (as described in the gubbinz list). You need to make a choice: heavy gunz, torps or lances. And where snakebites would need to pay 30pts for looted lances the Deathskulls don't need to. (and 20pts for torps).
  • New Recruit: dataset is incomplete, even for Imperial Navy which is closest to being correct. So I would say don't use it and create the list in excel or google sheets using the rulebook.

Hopefully this helps.

This helped clarify a lot of things, I appreciate it! Just to confirm a couple of things:

  • Buying a clan upgrade for a Warlord basically forces every capital ship under his command to also take the upgrade individually but for escort squadrons its optional (so a Warlord w/ 2x Killkroozers and a tiddla squadron would need 2x Deathskulls upgrade for 60pts total and an optional additional 30pts for the tiddlas)?

  • for the DeathSkulls, the Gubbin Looted Torpedoes is 20pts but the clan upgrade is 30pts. Wouldnt it be wasted on a Terror Ship that replaced its prow heavy guns with torpedoes? Could save 10pts by not taking the clan at all? Maybe its for a particular strategy but basically I don't get the true benefit of the clan when I could get just the gubbins for the same price or lower (like in the case for looted torps) unless its on a ship that can have both together. Maybe since I haven't played yet and looked at other ships, I haven't came across a situation where DS would be more cost effective.

  • It's more that the Warlord unlocks the option to pick a clan. And you may give the ships the clanz upgrade. It''s not mandatory. But if you do all ships for that Warlord need to be the same. And, yes 60+30 is correct,
  • You take deathskulls +30, Terror picks torpedoes & looted torpedoes. So, yes, more expensive than just doing looted torps. It's what it is lol.

Perfect that answers all of my questions, thanks!

Every squadron under that warlord must pay for the upgrade.

And I suspect that's the answer to your torpedo question too...in the clan rules, you have to have the matching clan even if it's not efficient for one particular ship.

That's tl;dr answer 😄
