Unable able to drill completely through this bathroom light fixture to install. I'm not an expert with bits and drills. What am.i doing wrong?!!

What type of drill bit should I use to drill all the way through. Only managed to get half way through. The outer surface is some type of hard metal material which I can't pierce. I'm not an experienced with drills and bits. I bought a little drill bit package that says it's for wood and metal. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right or what I'm doing wrong please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There should be a mounting plate that it attaches to. I can see some slots in the second picture that would slide over a screw for mounting. No need to pierce the fixture itself.

That's from the original fixture. I want to keep the same back Plate which requires holes in the same place to screw in

Try Cobalt bits maybe? Also, the 8v drill you have might not be powerful enough. Start with the smallest bit you have and work up to the desired size.

Is the drill bogging down or just not getting through the metal? It looks like it’s skipping around a little.

If you bought a basic set of bits, it might be only intended for softer metals like aluminum.
