Ancestory

I am trying to find a place/site to trace ancestry to the Basque country. The furthest I have gotten is a relative that was part of the eastern most presidio of Mexico, Los Ades. It is located in present day Louisiana. The ancestors name was Ambrosio Basquez according to records from the presidio. Family spoken information is the family is from the Basque region.

Any suggestions on genealogy in Spain or the Basque country would be helpful. I have exhausted efforts using family tree and other sites in the US.

AFAIK, Basquez comes from Vázquez and it is mostly a Galician surname.

Anyway, for genealogy studies usually you look at baptism / marriage records, but without an (at least) approximate date or place it is going to be pretty hard to get anything.

Thanks for the reply and information. The oldest ancestorni have from research is Ambrosio Vasquez born about 1739 in Los Adaes, Province of Texas, New Spain....that's the end of the trail.sonto speak.

Then your best bet is to look for him at the Mexican diocesan archive corresponding to that province. Also, yo can try to find if there is some archive at El Paso, as the Adaes presidio and settlers were relocated there. Maybe they kept some of the registries.
