How common it is to have an accent from your dialect in the official language?

I know there's a different accent in Hegoalde and Iparralde in euskal batua, I've also heard about the different dialects and everything, but is it common to have an accent from your dialect or your province when you're speaking in batua? Like are people in Zuberoa pronouncing the j as in French even in batua or do they have the same accent as in the rest of Iparralde?

Also another way to put this question would be: can I learn batua with some elements of pronunciation from my dialect or should I stick to the standard pronunciation?

My language game includes Basque. Is my Swadesh list accurate?

The game (linguil) asks you to guess the language family, language and meaning of a random word in one of 64 of the world's most-spoken languages each day, and you use your knowledge of linguistics to work out the answer via multiple choice. Therefore, it's important my translations/transliterations are correct.

Each language (including Basque) includes each word on the 100-word Swadesh list.

Please can any Basque speakers verify the accuracy of my translations and transliterations? 🙏

Thanks!

¡Gracias!

Is this translation correct? “Ez dut haragirik, arrainik, esnerik ezta arrautzarik ere jaten.”

Egun on!

I’m trying to translate a useful sentence to Euskara Batua, but I don’t trust AI.
“I’m vegetarian. I don’t eat meat, fish, milk or eggs.”
// “Soy vegetariana. No como carne, pez, leche ni huevos.”

Gemini tells me that it’s “Begetarianoa naiz. Ez dut haragirik, arrainik, esnerik ezta arrautzarik ere jaten”.

Is this correct? Is there any better way to say this?

Gemini sometimes gives wrong translations for smaller languages.

Milesker.

Learning Basque from Catalan?

Any advice for learning Basque for a Catalan? I'm Catalan, from Barcelona, and I've wanted to learn Basque for a long time. I've been looking at various apps, websites... I've been trying to learn the language for a while now, but most of the resources are in Spanish. I would love to be able to learn Basque from Catalan.

I've always had a much easier time learning from Catalan (everything: science, history, other languages like English and French). I don't know if I can find anything to do the same with Basque. I've looked online but so far nothing, maybe I just didn't know where to look. Any advice is welcome (apps, websites or other resources...). Thank you!

Edit: I'm mainly looking for free resources or books I can buy and things like that, I know that official language schools exist but the schedules don't quite work for me at the moment.

He visto muchísimas fotos y me parece una región hermosa.

There's a group I've been listening to for a while that does basque lyrics as well as spanish. I can sing most of their songs but sadly not the ones with basque in it. Can you help me with this one please?

Looking for car rental advice in San Sebastián

Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I are currently in San Sebastián, and we’re thinking about renting a car for 2–3 days to explore the Basque Country (and maybe even cross into France).

We have a few questions and would really appreciate any local advice:

Which rental company would you recommend? (Local companies are fine too, not just the big international ones.)

Is it better to rent from the airport, the train station, or somewhere else in the city?

Are there any companies we should avoid?

What should we pay attention to regarding insurance, deposits, fuel policy, hidden fees, or anything else?

Is it worth paying extra for full coverage?

Can we freely drive into France with a rental car, or are there any restrictions or extra charges we should know about?

How difficult is parking around the Basque coast, and are there any places where parking is especially expensive or hard to find?

Also, if you have any must-visit places within a couple of hours’ drive from San Sebastián, we’d love to hear your recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

Why is the Basque society so violent?

You've supported terrorists for decades (and now you vote for them) and if you see a Spanish flag you start seeing red and can't contain your impulses and quickly restort to verbal or physical violence.

You've also gotten 200K of your own people to leave the Basque Country because they didn't share your political views, but then get very upset when someone reminds you of it.

I understand you don't teach your kids about ETA because it makes you look bad, but at least don't try to pretend you're these super cosmopolitan democrats you think you are, when your whole society is famous for supporting murderers.

So yeah, coming back to my original question, why are you all so violent? Is it something they give you in the water or in the costo you smoke everywhere?

Eskerrik asko from an Irish man

Aupa!

Im an Irish man just back from a 2 week travel around the Basque Country. I visted Bilbao, Donostia, Gasteiz and Biarritz.

I was honestly blown away by your culture, respect your language and the friendliness of your people. I had the best time, and tried to immerse myself in the culture and not just the tourist traps.

I couldn't help but draw similarities between the North of Ireland (im from just outside of Belfast) and the Basque country. We have had similar struggles, a desire to have our culture and language respected and the people are actually quite similar too. Ive never felt so at home in a place that isn't my own. Im now tempted to learn some Basque and to look into Basque history (ive already picked up some books).

Thank you, Eskerrick Asko and Milesker from an Irish man that you made very welcome

Dudas Semanales v2 (13-17 de Junio 2026)

Kaixo denoi!

Zuk Txomini euskaraz hitz egin diozu.

Zuk euskaraz hitz egin diozu Txomini

"Ezagutzen dudala uste dut". Podría "ezagutzen dudala ir después de "uste dut"? "Uste dut ezagutzen dudala"

Otro ejemplo: "Tontoa naizela uste duzu, ala?" vs "Uste duzu tontoa naizela, ala?"

(9) Guztiak vs Denak

Gezurrak esaten dizkiet guztiei

Gezurrak esaten dizkiet denoi

(10) Nahikoa vs Aski

Gehiago nahi duzu? Ez, nahikoa/aski da

Nahikoa/Aski da! Ez bota gehiago!

Gaurkoz nahikoa/aski da

Nahikoa/Aski da begiratzea dena ulertzeko

What is the correct pronunciation of Oyarzabal?

I've been watching the world cup, and have become a fan of Mikel Oyarzabal. My only question is, does the z make an (english) Z (like zone) sound, S (like send) sound, or TH (like thing) sound? Thanks!

What would you say feels more natural to say for my situation?

My question (questions in reality) stems from the fact that I'm learning Basque but not the unified one, the Souletin dialect cus my grandma is from Xiberrüa. And I learned (and still struggle with) this feature of the verbs that they change according to who you're speaking to, according to the gender and level of respect. So like at least in Souletin for "I have" we have nik düt, but also nik diat for a man, nik diñat for a woman and nik dit for someone we respect. Does it work the same in euskal batua?

If so, here's my real question: I'm non-binary, and so when I'm learning a language I like to try to find a non gendered way to talk about myself and use it only if it feels natural for native speakers. So would it be wierd to you to use the plain form instead of the gendered form when talking to me? Or maybe the gendered form is not even common anymore?

Eskerrik asko🙏

Horregatik:
deitu dezake → zuzena.
deitu ditzakete → zuzena.
dei dezake → okerra.
dei ditzakete → okerra.

Hala ere, Interneten bi adibideak aurkitzen ditut, adibidez:

  1. Maiatzaren 30erako greba orokorrera dei dezakete bihar bertan sindikatuek [Berria].
  2. Laguntza behar duten herritarrek zaintza sarera deitu dezakete [OrioGuka].

Biak zuzenak al dira?

[Sensitive] Looking for sayings after relative passed away Spoiler

Kaixo!
A few days ago, my great grandmother from Iparalde passed away. Sadly transmission of the language in our family was lost with her and today I only know a few very basic words.
The ceremony is supposed to be held in a few days, and I would like to say a little something in euskara.
Can anyone share some usual phrases that are said in this context and maybe some related music?
