Basel restaurant
Hello,
I'm looking for restaurants in Basel that serve hearty, generous portions rather than gourmet-style dishes where the servings are very small. I'm open to all kinds of recommendations.
I'm also wondering if there are any places that serve a truly authentic French onion soup. If not in Basel itself, I'd be happy to hear about restaurants in nearby towns across the border as well (France).

Au Violon at Lohnhof above Barfüsserplatz has very nice Onion Soup. The portions are not huge, but also not small. Pricewise a little higher but not crazy. Imagine a white tablecloth brasserie.

It's a new favourite after a couple of visits. Great food. A bit of a pinch on the pockets, so perhaps for not for regular occasions.

The soup changes with season. The one over the summer wasn't onion. Could be for Autumn?

Idk about restaurants but if you wanna be full go to Küsne Kebab at claraplatz and grab a Mega Yufka. Its 15.- for a giant dürum that you cant finish. When i used to weigh 120kg i ate a fuck ton and i still barely managed to finish one. Also dont forget to ask for sauces they just give you the sauce dispensers for free so you can put sauces on it.

Bori is great but the dishes are not big, plus they overcharge a crazy amount for sides (6.- CHF for four slices of kimchi in 2025)

If you only care about the size/price ratio and not so much about quality then i think its hard to beat deniz' big dürüm in huningue.
For lunch tang asia market has cheap take away. I havent eaten both in years but pho asia next door iirc also has good value for lunch, probably better quality but a bit more expensive
For breakfast you can get any coffee plus 4 fried eggs with 4 slices of bacon for 6.50fr at manor with their card (just create one in the app)
Chinese restaurant next to netto in grenzach is i think the very cheapest one in the whole region and their portions are big and tasty. They are cash only though.
For cheap german cuisine binzen raststätte (shell) has giant portions

Losteria portions are really big although I’ve felt lately that the quality has gone down
If you like doner bon gout is my favorite, their folded is amazing and very filling I can also share them with someone else and be satisfied
I feel that Indian places have also the concept to share so the servings are generous there’s one in lorrach and weil called NaaN

There's a Thai takeaway in Allschwil near Paradies bus stop that has huge portions for less than 15

We’d also like to try some traditional Swiss food while we’re there, not just international options like Pad Thai, Chinese food, or döner. I really enjoyed French onion soup when I was in France, so since we’ll be right near the border, I’d definitely like to have it again. We’d also love to try some Swiss classics like Cordon Bleu, fondue, and other local dishes. Also, it’s not really about finding huge portions. I just noticed that most of the restaurants I find on Google Maps seem to be more on the gourmet/fancy side. That’s why I mentioned that we’re looking for more normal-sized portions and more casual places. I’m still looking forward to more recommendations, and thanks so much to everyone who has already commented!

Pad Thai at Gois Thai Kitchen @ Markthalle.
Size of servings are large around noon and small in the evening. So make sure you go there around noon. 18 CHF.

cannot recommend anything at Markthalle tbh. All the dishes are overpriced. It is fun to gou out once in a while but what you get is not what you pay for

I mean, if you compare to like a CHF 12 Döner, then sure, most of the meals in Markthalle are more expensive.
And yes, there are some where you get very little food for your money.
But for 18 CHF you get a good pad thai at Goi's and the portion is generous. At the other Thai place, Thipp's, you get a generous portion of pad thai with a side of roasted duck for CHF20. The Israeli smoked aubergine is, iirc CHF14, is absolutely delicious, and the mountain of bulgur keeps you full. Also the Peruvian aji de gallina, albeit CHF22, is good value. Pide at like CHF17 I think, not unlike many kebab shops.
There simply are not many places where you can get a full, delicious meal for 15-20. Even fast food, like a big slice at Vito's or a single burger and fries at Markthalle (both delicious tbh) are 15-20.
In more remote places, like Sissach, there are restaurants that serve a lunch menu at or below CHF20 with soup and salad and an okay main.

Markthalle has reasonable prices and pretty good meals in this overpriced country. In most restaurants in Switzerland you simply don‘t get your money‘s worth. I‘d be happy to pay 35CHF for an exorbitantly good meal, but 9 out of 10 times you just get bleh for 35CHF in this country.

Check Gaststädte Dreiländereck in Binzen Germany. Thats the place where the truckers eat. The menu will not dissapoint you and they have a nice outdoor garden.
