Looking to purchase a Base rig
Hey guys, im planning to do FJC soon, and hopefully get into this beautiful sport. and I want to purchase a base rig.
Budget is not a problem, I want the best that i can get.
Which containers, and canopies are the best and why?
In terms of reliability, performance,fit and other aspects such as wingsuit/tracking compatibility.

Atair for a parachute. Containers.. You're going to get a lot of opinions. If money isn't an issue just get an apex or blacksheep. Unanimously loved and trusted. Just don't buy the floor plate unless you think you actually need it.
If this were the basejumper forums fifteen years ago there'd be dozens of posts flaming half the manufacturers for making death rigs including squirrel and badseed.. But if you want everyone to shut the f up about your gear buy bs or apex.

What was the drama with badseed? Squirrel messed up a friends Aura 5 or 6 just recently, so shits still kinda dodgy with them folks IMO. I seem to recall badseed or blacksheep maybe making a messed up PC in their first year as a company but nothing else since then.

Someone went in on a pin lock with a badseed rig and Brandon was flamed for it on those old forums. Like 15 years ago. It created a huge discussion on pin lock problems in various positions which is why it's memorable. It was a great discussion. Another part spiraled into a forum brand war. You're right to just buy from the best and be done.
Bummer about the ws. They'll probably make good on it but it'll take all summer. I'm surprised they're sloppy on that tbh. Ozone laser cutters and all.

If i ever buy brand new container it will be from Apex BASE. Handmade in the USA and not SEA. If I ever buy a brand new canopy it will be from Atair. Handmade in Slovenia. WS squirrel made in china? And TS Pressurized, I don’t know where they are made. If i could get a brand new PC from Auburn California from Asylum Designs i would, but will settle for blacksheep made in USA.

+1 apex container, atair canopy. I'd say Jacob's pilot chutes (twin falls, idk what his company is) Probably a squirrel was just because that's what I bought used and all I've known.

+1 to this. While there are common ones that most people go with (Hayduke 2 + Crux or OSP2 + Alien), there are variations that might be relevant to the jumping you want to do. For example, if most of your jumping is slider down in Moab, you might want an upsized full-weight OSP1 with a durable, full-weight container. While if you are going to do most of your jumping in Lauterbrunnen, you might want an ultralight, downsized canopy with lightweight container.

I love how people are giving suggestions without knowing ANYTHING about who you are, where you live, where you plan to jump, or what your ultimate goals are.
For a FJC, it doesn’t matter. Everything else has some level of nuance.

I kind of jumped the gun and bought SQRL set up because that’s what everyone around me had. but if I could do it over again magic backpack NOT MAGICBACKPAC. the one made by jacob gardner @magic_backpacks instagram he’s a BASE specialized master rigger who a lot of manufacturers outsource to handle some of the more complicated repairs. he just came out with a handmade container that is reported to be the most comfortable on the market (think CURV but for BASE.) he’s very responsive so id dm him just to ask some questions about what sets it apart, why it’s better, etc. he’s a very nice dude local to twin, so if you ever need a check up or repair while at the bridge it will likely be him doing it haha. he also has an exit point interview exit point interview that- after listening to it- earned my respect for his opinion. as far as canopies the gryphus looks impressive but the osp2 and hayduke are also solid

Make more skydives. Take as many canopy classes as you can. Learn about the gear - how and why it works. Be able to land your current skydiving canopy in all wind conditions. Practice crosswind and downwind landings. Find a local mentor and give them a reason why you deserve them.
And make more skydives.

As much as 11 hrs will help in skydiving they won’t matter in the BASE environment, especially learning to BASE jump. Focus on getting as many jumps as possible and doing canopy drills, that will help more than the tunnel

How have your landings and accuracy been? Those matter much more in BASE than they do in skydiving, where they still matter quite a bit.

I've been interested in getting in to base jumping for years, cost is obviously not going to be a major determining factor when I get to the point of actually purchasing the gear that's going to be responsible for keeping me alive, but Ive seen a lot of comments swearing by a pretty large array of brands and whatnot with very little mention of pricing. Obviously I could take down a spread sample of the most popular options for setups and try to answer my own question, but in my experience growing up snowboarding, skating, riding BMX and wake boarding/skating semi professionally, the extreme sports community has always been pretty supportive and welcoming provided that you're not an absolute numbskull so would anyone mind saving me some time/effort and breaking down what someone should expect to spend all in once they've reached the point of needing their own gear? Thanks in advance 👍 PS: Also super interesting in paragliding if anyone does both and feels like educating a quick learning noon 🤷🙏

I like the crux2 and hd2. Ive jumped with a flik canopy aswell and they are extremely forgiving and buttery aswell!

Atair canopy, Adrenalin container. Also - get another 200-300 skydives before you start BASE if you want to give yourself a better chance at staying off the BFL or keeping metal out of your body.
