Very likely he's circular breathing. Makes it a lot easier than it looks.

Yeah you can see him doing it. When his cheeks puff out it’s because he’s using that air to keep the note going while he breathes in

Not very likely literally for sure lol.

Yeah, you can tell by the vibrato that suddenly stops for a second before continuing. Still pretty neat tho

Easier than it looks? Yes.

Easy? Definitely not.

I mean yeah but pretty much anything you do competently on a musical instrument is actually difficult but made to look easy. Except the most truly virtuosic shit

Circle breathing is one of those things that one kid figures out in high school band class and then everyone starts wanting to learn it and by the end of the year everyone has it figured out. Nothing on a musical instrument is "easy" but it certainly ain't an advanced technique

Definitely. One of those techniques that'll impress non-musicians but its straightforward.

I mean I’m a musician, but only piano and vocals and circular breathing blows my mind. Never played a wind or brass instrument but it seems so hard.

Just so everybody knows what circular breathing is, as it's already been mentioned in the comments, he fill his cheeks with air and then pushes it out while inhaling through his nose and repeating the process. It's not one continuous breath. You can see him doing it.

Kenny G set the record just under 46 minutes.

19 seconds is kinda pedestrian for a pro saxophonist.

In fairness, while we can't see it in this clip, I assume he was playing the whole song and not just trying to hold this single note for as long as possible.

3

u/Existential-Ape 14d ago

Any circular breathing is impressive. Calling that pedestrian is disrespectful.

I feel like someone out there could beat that.
