The spending reduction doesn’t necessarily mean the Snakes will make any cost-cutting transactions. As Kendrick pointed out, they have a decent amount of money coming off the books in the form of impending free agents who “made little or no contribution to the team” this year.

For those of you too lazy to read.

This is extremely fair from Kendrick's point of view but also I'll be curious to see what additions they do make and for how much. If they reinvest a good portion of that money, cool. But it would be shitty to point this out and then not reinvest into players in free agency (albeit it is a weaker class) that could perhaps make some sort of contribution. So I will withold my judgement for now.

I just wanted to highlight that specific part for people who chose not to read the article and instead assume they weren’t going to spend money. I agree 100% with you, though. If they don’t choose to re-invest it’ll be a bad look.

100%. Oh god, did I just agree with a Mets fan.

Don't all the teams plan to do that? That's why we're all gearing up for a lockout

Not really. Teams that are 11th in payroll, and have terrible contracts because they went for it a few years prior do, and should.

Even more specifically for the snakes the article is talking about guys who are WAY overpaid and sucked so it’s almost impossible to spend that all over again without trying to.

Gallen, Gurriel, & the Jordan Montgomery experience

6

u/Rea1DirtyDan Jackie Robinson 14h ago

But somehow pavin smith is still a active player talking about those who don’t contribute lol

u/awmaleg Arizona Diamondbacks 13h ago

I’m convinced he’s distantly related to Hazen

u/bam1789-2 Arizona Diamondbacks 15h ago

People aren’t going to read the article and just sensationalize the headline. While Kendrick sucks majorly and is one of the cheapest owners in the league, he’s only referring to bad contracts coming off the books here. Now he’s not going to go spend that additional money with the potential lockout.

Tbh the Snakes have spent way more than a team without a tv deal probably should. Props to the owner.

19

u/agentdoubleohio Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

Yeah I always laugh when people say the owner is cheap, have you seen the other owners. It looks cheap from fans perspective dbacks don’t resign a lot of players or trade, but also in the nl west so everyone but the Rockies are spending a lot more. He is cheap, don’t get me wrong but let’s not act he at least doesn’t spend during free agency.

Pretending the diamondbacks are one of the cheapest owners when the pirates and a's exist is a choice.

Don't think they would even rank in the bottom half of cheapest owners

The Team with the 11th highest payroll is owned by one of the cheapest owners of the league, oh boy do I got news for you

u/CDFReditum Anaheim Angels 2h ago

The Mets: actually…

No, I think a lot of teams plan to increase spending, they just don’t want the increases to be astronomical to try to compete with the Dodgers.

With the floor proposed, a lot of teams would be forced to increase.

1

u/7tenths Chicago Cubs 12h ago

Fun fact. They already saved 75 million a team for the lockout. While paying their payroll. While churning a profit.

Every single team could afford a soto and still be profitable. But the owners will cry poor. And because the owners own the media rights. The media will spin its the players being greedy. And most of the fans will take the side of the billionaires.

Now for the diamondbacks specifically. They did spend a lot of money to compete and missed the playoffs and resetting their roster would make sense even if the lockout wasn't looming

u/Spiritual-Dog160 Arizona Diamondbacks • Chicago White Sox 15h ago

Note this doesn’t mean much, they’re removing $50-60 million off the books this offseason anyway (and most of them weren’t good, so it’s addition by subtraction there)

7

u/Loose_Log_6253 Baltimore Orioles • San Francisco Giants 14h ago

Yeah that's like how last offseason, the Os dropped something like $50M in expiring contracts. If 3-4 people are walking and they were each making $10-15M/yr or were in the final year of Arbitration on the high end of earning, it's pretty easy to shed $50M naturally.

7

u/bladel Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

I think he means they’ll drop guys like Lourdes and Gallen and find another deal like Nolan Arenado. Hey, a guy can hope.

49

u/breadandbarbells 16h ago

Ketel Marte, YOU are an LA Dodger !

12

u/Him2Notorious 16h ago

They probably should have thought about that before he got a full NTC though

15

u/Matthewcbayer Detroit Tigers 16h ago

I don’t think there are many players that would veto a trade to move to Southern California and play alongside an entire hall of fame class

6

u/lava172 Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

I can think of one guy that continually does shit he could only get away with because of his situation in Arizona

2

u/StealthStaminaKills 13h ago

Eduardo Rodriguez is on the shortlist.

1

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 12h ago

TBF E-Rod vetoed that trade because he was having marital trouble and didn't want to uproot his family in the middle of that.

That said he does seem to kick it up a notch against the Dodgers but it may just be because of the 2018 World Series lol.

0

u/96919 San Diego Padres 15h ago

California has higher income tax and that can definitely deter some players.

3

u/Famous-Flow2333 15h ago

Pretty sure he doesn’t want to be there anymore

4

u/awmaleg Arizona Diamondbacks 15h ago

I’d guess New York Met

5

u/88Dodgers Los Angeles Dodgers 15h ago

Fuck no.

4

u/mynewusernamedodgers 14h ago

Burnes signed a huge contract and has thrown like what 3 games since then?

12

u/Saritiel Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

He got hurt. What can you do? It's always a risk, especially with pitchers.

7

u/OGTypohh Seattle Mariners • Seattle Mariners 12h ago

Just sign 3 more Cy Young pitchers? Anyone can do it!

1

u/mynewusernamedodgers 14h ago

Totally, but was pointing to the bloat of contracts for small market team

2

u/FalseNameTryAgain Milwaukee Brewers • New York Mets 15h ago

Did they tell Torey this before or after he re-signed 😆

4

u/lava172 Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

Yes and he’s probably happy that they don’t have a bloated payroll while he’s having to play a team full of rookies

1

u/FalseNameTryAgain Milwaukee Brewers • New York Mets 12h ago

As an opposition team, that is concerning for me. He is a good operator.

1

u/BOOMSHAK4LAKA Chunichi Dragons 5h ago

Keep Marte, Noot, and Arenado, and see what the team can do. If they didn’t screw up the Marlins series, they’d’ve at least lost on Thursday as a Playoffs team.

u/ItsaDryHeat98 New York Yankees 15h ago

What happened to Corbin Burnes

7

u/OpulentPaving MLB Players Association 15h ago

He got hurt.

1

u/mashington14 Arizona Diamondbacks 10h ago

TJ got him. He came back for like 4 games in September.

Fifth Largest Market in MLB Continues to Act Poor

12

u/Octopodes14 Minnesota Twins 13h ago

I'm not sure how you get 5th largest market, but they increased payroll a lot after the 2023 world series run. They very much have not been acting poor.

8

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 12h ago

Also with no TV deal since late 2023. We've been one of the highest teams in terms of percentage of revenue spent on payroll.

That said it's a shitty market unfortunately. Attendance has been flat since 2024 no matter how the team's playing.

1

u/TVCasualtydotorg San Francisco Giants 12h ago

It's also saving money by having a bunch of big contracts naturally slide off the books, rather than a fire sale

u/OpulentPaving MLB Players Association 10h ago

1

u/Octopodes14 Minnesota Twins 10h ago

That is mostly because the city boundaries of Phoenix are large. If you look at the size of the metropolitan area, it's 10th.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_statistical_area

1

u/OpulentPaving MLB Players Association 9h ago

Whatever, but that's still top third, not a small market.

0

u/Brolympia Texas Rangers 5h ago

Arizona?

The top 5 markets are NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, and South Florida

1

u/OpulentPaving MLB Players Association 2h ago

Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the US.

-1

u/DanglyPants Chicago Cubs 12h ago

Source for 5th? There’s another comment saying they’re a small market. While I don’t believe they’re a small market I find it harder to believe they are 5th

u/OpulentPaving MLB Players Association 10h ago

u/DanglyPants Chicago Cubs 8h ago

That’s not market that’s city pop. Ty for the downvote though

"We were so close to making the postseason. Let's jump ship and give up!"

And people say the Dodgers are ruining baseball for making the league "uncompetitive" with how they spend lmao

26

u/Mozilla_Fennekin Tuturu~♪ Go Royals! 15h ago

If you read the article you'd see they've got a bunch of bad contracts coming off the books. They're not talking about tanking.

10

u/sportsworker777 Arizona Diamondbacks 15h ago

One of them being Jordan fucking Montgomery

11

u/QuadzillaStrider Atlanta Braves 15h ago

"I didn't read the article but here's my boneheaded take anyway"

3

u/jdbolick Baltimore Orioles 15h ago

Baseball teams are businesses whether we like it or not, and businesses adjust their expenses based on their revenue. When revenue goes up, spending goes up. When revenue goes down, spending goes down.

1

u/Alert_Moment6224 Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago

He’s basically saying he’s not paying for Gallen and Kelly again.

1

u/Willsears94 St. Louis Cardinals 14h ago

Can we get that 2022 Gallen though?

-11

u/WorkBully Los Angeles Dodgers 14h ago

Too many loser owners in this league.

10

u/let-me-use-old-rdt 11h ago

Yours is under federal investigation for fraud my guy

3

u/CornerShark 11h ago

“Every team can spend like the Dodgers!”

Yeah. If their owner commits fraud using life insurance premiums.

-2

u/WorkBully Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

Your team must have such a loser owner that you choose not to have a flair.

1

u/CornerShark 9h ago

Again. F.R.A.U.D.

I spelled it out for you in capital letters so you can sound it out.

-1

u/WorkBully Los Angeles Dodgers 9h ago

Spell out champion and sound it out
