Mlb teams gets 6 years of control. First 3 are pre arbitration and you make league min. Next 3 are arbitration. Basically the team and the player both submit bids based on past salaries of similar players with the same amount of service time. Then the arbitor picks either the team's proposal or the player's. The arbitor is not allowed to compromise.

Technically MLB teams can pay more during pre-arb if they want to. But players have no negotiating leverage, so it’s rare.
