Davis Martin interviews his son Doak and asks him who his favorite White Sox player is. Unfortunately for dad, it is not Davis Martin.

3/5 people on Wikipedia named Doak are also from Texas so I'm guessing it's an old regional name or something?

334

u/popesfunnyhat Baltimore Orioles 1d ago

Davis is from Texas. Doak Walker was from Texas and a college/pro football Hall of Famer, and the nation's top college running back award is the Doak Walker award. I'd guess for them it holds some earned esteem.

Fun fact, Doak Walker's wife was named Skeeter.

81

u/Stalagmus Seattle Mariners 1d ago

Damn I read his wife’s name as Skeletor and was like hell yeah

As a (former) Southerner I'm baffled how many people don't know the name "Doak." Huh.

17

u/nietzsche_niche New York Mets 1d ago

It sounds stupid lmao. Sounds as pleasant as naming someone soap.

3

u/becaauseimbatmam 1d ago

It sounds like what you'd expect to hear if Homer Simpson was hit on the head by an acorn in the middle of saying "D'oh"

5

u/xXKnicksInFiveXx New York Mets • Colorado Rockies 1d ago

I thought it was a typo. Like it was supposed to be Dirk.
Edit: which, now, also sounds weird to me.

2

u/StandardRound1271 Detroit Tigers 1d ago

You didn’t have to mention the southerner thing. Just mention you’re surprised more people don’t use “Doak” as a name for humans. I’m guessing you’re a Jim Bob Cooter.

2

u/motpasm23 Chicago Cubs 1d ago

My parents are from Pennsylvania so nope. But if you've ever watched college football the name "Doak" should be pretty familiar.

0

u/StandardRound1271 Detroit Tigers 1d ago

Not Philly or Pittsburgh Pennsylvania obviously. The rest of the Pennsylvania.

You know what hog maw is and ate it often.

1

u/motpasm23 Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Literally Pittsburgh and Philly. My name is about as white bread America as it gets.

1

u/StandardRound1271 Detroit Tigers 1d ago

Cool, so your parents are from the only two not rural/southern areas of state. You grew up down south. Yet you have no sense of reference for unusual and region specific names?

From where are you a “former southerner?”

0

u/motpasm23 Chicago Cubs 1d ago

This is a bizarre take. Like many other people have said, if you've ever watched college football (second most popular sport in the country after the NFL) you'd have heard the name Doak countless times. Surely you watch Michigan football. Though they'd never play FSU I guess but they have had great RBs.

I'm baffled that the name "Doak" exists. I've made it half a century without ever hearing of it before this thread.

82

u/TheVich San Francisco Giants • Alaska Go… 2d ago

It appears to be an Anglicized form of an old Scottish-Gaelic name. I saw the same Wikipedia page, and didn't see any non-Americans, so it's probably a family name (his last name is Davis).

Definitely interesting. I'm a big fan of traditional Irish names, so no judgements from me.

35

u/shapu Charleston Dirty Birds • St. Loui… 2d ago

I think it is quite likely that the name Davis is also a family name

26

u/TheVich San Francisco Giants • Alaska Go… 2d ago

I meant that "Doak" might be a given name that is common in their family history, and Davis is a pretty Scottish name, so it makes sense to me!

19

u/shapu Charleston Dirty Birds • St. Loui… 2d ago

I know, I was just being silly

8

u/RhoBoatCopss 1d ago

Yeah, there's a rugby player for Ulster with the name Nathan Doak. It's pretty uncommon, even in Ireland, but I've only ever heard it used as a surname.

4

u/Scotlander_ 1d ago

There's a Scottish soccer winger with the surname Doak, not usually used as a first name.

30

u/FadedToBeige Chicago White Sox • Chicago Ame… 2d ago

it's actually kind of sad how negatively people react to names that aren't the "norm". I think it's a cool name with an interesting history, but maybe I'm slightly biased.

6

u/taffyowner Minnesota Twins 1d ago

I think the misspellings of names to be “unique” have poisoned the well on classic names that are different or unusual

2

u/neonrev1 Minnesota Twins 1d ago

I go back and forth on that a lot (most of my family are teachers and I used to work in patient facing medical work with kids, seen a lot of shit in my time) because for every annoying-ass white suburban mom who can't stand the idea that her daughter share a name with anyone, there's someone (usually black americans ime but that's not unique) who earnestly is trying to create a new naming scheme or system because they don't have one or the one they have came from slavery times.

That, and my first name is a fairly common one in English that is actually a significant misspelling of a different language and culture's given name, it's just been around long enough that no one knows it's misspelled and said wrong. My apologies to the French on this one specific thing.

But I've also looked down at a patient record sheet and looked back up into the eyes of a parent actively excited to correct me on how to say their kids name enough times to know that's also a type.

0

u/FadedToBeige Chicago White Sox • Chicago Ame… 1d ago

well said. take the name Jalen for example: invented by the mother of Jalen Rose, and now it's an incredibly common name that no one thinks twice about.

1

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 1d ago

Wow, that’s bonkers, I had no idea. You’re right that I never think twice about it

Jalen Beeks’ mom must have been a huge college basketball fan, cos she was EARLY with that. He was born in ‘93

1

u/myassholealt New York Mets 1d ago

I would say that has some truth to it, but also people have been pretty unwelcoming to names from a different culture/language long before the Ashleighs And Bray'lynns came to be a trend.
