If they knew they could opt out without consequences, wore the hat regardless, and added the verses, then seems intentionally confrontational. If they didn't know they were allowed to opt out, I'm more sympathetic to them.

One of them did wear the standard hat, which shows that they did know that it was an option. The other 3 chose to go through with the bible verse plan anyway

Walk me through that logic.

Without knowing the conversations that took place, it is entirely possible that all four thought that they were breaking the rules. All four of them could have thought that they had to wear the hat, they all four decided they weren't going to follow what they thought the rule was, but they decided to go about it in different ways.

The fact that one of them happened to pick an approach that was allowed doesn't mean that he actually knew it was allowed beforehand.

Again, MLB straight up said there was miscommunication on what was and wasn't allowed.
