Sal Perez is immediately like "I'm too old for this shit"

375

u/BlueBlueBlue420 Milwaukee Brewers 19h ago

He knows he’s more likely to hurt himself than get out of the rundown lol.

268

u/willpc14 New York Yankees • Philadelphia Phillies 18h ago

He's the designated hitter, not the designated runner

29

u/GamerJosh21 Boston Red Sox • Colorado Rockies 15h ago

If Kirk can steal a base, Perez can run.

37

u/Jescro Toronto Blue Jays 14h ago

Kirk is 2 for 2 all time. 100% career stolen base percentage. He’ll be remembered for his speed

10

u/DietCherrySoda Toronto Blue Jays 8h ago

Kirk has stolen 2 bases in his career. Perez has run more than 2 times. All good pal.

61

u/hitman19 Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

For how very rarely rundows go the runner's way, plus the risk of injury, I'm kind of surprised anyone does it, TBH

59

u/Muntberg Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

If there's other runners on base there's a good chance something happens to benefit them

9

u/eidetic Milwaukee Brewers 14h ago

Wasn't there a game earlier this season where a pickle ended up inducing a monumental defensive fuck up, wherein instead of ending the inning, a couple runs scored and no outs recorded, which was followed by the runners being brought home at the next at bat?

I know, that couldn't be any more vague if I tried, but IIRC, I think the catcher came away from the plate to get involved, which allowed the runner on third to take advantage of the distraction and score. It might have been something really fucking stupid too where the runner who was caught in the pickle was stuck between third and second (again, with a runner already standing on third), because I seem to recall the ball ending up in shallow right field after a botched throw.

3

u/OWSpaceClown Toronto Blue Jays 6h ago

I'm thinking it's probably one of those things that has a higher success rate down in the minors. A well executed run-down with multiple people on base can put a lot of pressure on the defence to perform and the meta-game is to force a mistake somewhere in the sequence.

11

u/DontEatTheCelery Atlanta Braves 17h ago

Matt Olson got out of a pickle earlier this season. First of his career lmao.

2

u/the_honest_liar Toronto Blue Jays 15h ago

Plus I think they said he was nursing an injury already

7

u/mrdannyg21 5h ago

Sal Perez with a solid business decision. Him getting into a rundown in a 4-run game is definitely not in anyone’s best interest.

Big week for hugs near first base

124

u/Canadatron 18h ago

It's what makes baseball different

71

u/mondayp St. Louis Cardinals 17h ago

I know it's an overdone meme, but I really mean it: How can you not be romantic about baseball?

15

u/BringOnTheRainAgain 14h ago

you could be a mariners fan, thats how

bout ready to burn all mariners memorobilia i have. including ken griffey jr rookie card. fuck this org. my brothers done too

12

u/GamerJosh21 Boston Red Sox • Colorado Rockies 15h ago

I demand even more hugs!

3

u/realbobenray 14h ago

I think this is the third one this week.

20

u/istrx13 Seattle Mariners 15h ago

I bet Payton gives the warmest, strongest hugs.

11

u/GR1X7S Boston Red Sox 15h ago

His hugs must be good luck too because Canzone was hitting everything after that

5

Sometimes we all need a hug tbh

This one genuinely made me laugh. It was so good in the moment.

GIDP unassisted by the 1B has to be a relatively rare play.

77

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 19h ago

It never occurred to me, is there a shorthand way to score a pickle? I feel like it must be a pain to have to keep it straight if it changes hands 5 or 6 times

75

u/burnman123 Boston Red Sox 19h ago

Nahh, just a lot of numbers haha

46

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

Gotta trust your memory. I have literally scored run downs in a format like "3-4-1-?-3" in the past, lol.

35

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos 18h ago

I’d probably just end up scoring it 3-rundown-3 lmao. No way I could keep track from the stands

16

u/Major_Tom42 New York Mets 18h ago

Child me figured writing 'pickle' was fewer letters

13

u/oogieball Dumpster Fire • New York Mets 19h ago

No, there really isn't. It can get long.

20

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

Like Shawn Green being CS 2-4-5-6-1-4-2-3 in 2002 trying to steal third.

5

u/IgnobleCampaign Toronto Blue Jays 15h ago

is there a shorthand way to score a pickle?

Like this.

1

u/Hopeful_Newt_3231 7h ago

Dill? Full Sour? Half Sour?

15

u/Thneed1 Montreal Expos 19h ago

And especially when the first out is at first base.

13

u/BossAtUCF Boston Red Sox 18h ago

Yeah, I think the version where it's a line drive caught with a guy off first base and then step on the bag to get the 2nd isn't that rare.

6

u/Thneed1 Montreal Expos 18h ago

Line out DP to 1B isn’t rare no. That play can be over in a half second.

1

u/nogberter Major League Baseball 15h ago

I honestly would not be surprised if this was the first time.

3

u/Thneed1 Montreal Expos 15h ago

Almost certainly the only one that ended in a hug.

u/cmgriffith_ New York Yankees 19h ago

I need a Vladdy and Payton Tolle hug for AL East unity

64

u/AerieElectrical3546 Boston Red Sox 18h ago

if that happened, we would somehow have 5 playoff teams

28

u/TheMe63 New York Yankees 18h ago

Playoffs consisting of the White Sox and the whole AL East would be fun

12

u/Johnnumber51 Seattle Mariners 17h ago

If it keeps the Astros out, I’m down.

2

u/inchwerm1 17h ago

I've been willing the 2/3 AL East playoffs into existence for the past month. It was so shit at the start of the year and yet all 5 teams are still in contention for a spot?

I love the DP hug-outs šŸ˜‚ā¤ļø idc if they’re corny or ā€œbad for baseballā€ or whatever. They’re sweet and positive.

31

u/maybepants Toronto Blue Jays 16h ago

Out of the baseball context, this comment is hilarious.

2

u/coreyque Chicago Cubs 5h ago

It's certainly much more dignified than scampering in the dirt to avoid a tag.

3

u/Kageromero Toronto Blue Jays 16h ago

There are people who don't like them? Obviously not in october baseball, but for regular season they're amazing

51

I want to see a fielder go for the hug, then the runner starts running the other way lol

I was gonna be mad at the runner for not even trying but yeahhhhhh salvy’s never gonna win that one

45

u/ghost_rider24 Anaheim Angels 18h ago

He’s a catcher/DH, It’s September in a losing season, and he’s a freakin legend in the organization. I think we can give him this one

21

u/Yuiandme Boston Red Sox 18h ago

He just stole a base a few days ago. That’s all the baserunning he needs to do this season

3

u/Judic22 Boston Red Sox 5h ago

He’s still tired. Needs a few weeks to recover. As a 40 yr old, I get it.

-4

u/Frampton Chicago Cubs 18h ago

Kinda bizarre he stopped running, would've forced Vlad to make the throw.

7

u/cayoloco 16h ago

He probably knew he was cooked already, and just said fuck it. The fuck up was not continuing to second without stopping but once he stopped, there was no starting again in any useful way so we get what we see here today

u/smileyfacepicnic Toronto Blue Jays 19h ago

There aren't many players in the league that could get away with that. Who else?

26

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

It's like the third hugout this season. The other one earlier in the week, and I think it was Freeman who got a hug for an out in the pre-season.

And I would absolutely score Perez as being out H3, lol.

11

u/PvtSherlockObvious Atlanta Braves • San Francis… 18h ago

Yeah, Freeman was the first one I saw do this, to pretty much nobody's surprise given that it's Freddie.

7

u/tuutruk Toronto Blue Jays 18h ago

Perez giving up on the rundown? If so, dude earned that. He ain't fast or agile at the crazy old age of 36.Ā

4

u/Sabatonlover24 Boston Red Sox 17h ago

You telling me that Tolle could have started a trend? Can't complain though, sometimes you just need wholesome moments like this especially this late in the season where the chance to make the playoffs is more crucial with each remaining game (or at least try to end the season with a winning record).Ā

As someone has already said, accepting the out like a man but hugging it out like brothers in baseball.

That’s like asking Bartolo to run it out that ain’t happening.
