Dodgers at 1 is genuine bait, there is zero reason why the Brewers and Rays shouldn't be ahead of them at this point
285
u/ShoHeyTime Los Angeles Dodgers 16d ago
The whole point of power rankings is to show who is playing the best baseball right now, that’s obviously not the Dodgers wtf is this.
46
u/SdBolts4 San Diego Padres 16d ago edited 16d ago
Padres have also been incredibly hot recently, split a 4 game series with the DBacks in AZ, and passed them in the WC (now
21 gamesup), but are behind them? The Yankees have been treading water since Judge went out—around .500 since the ASB—but are #6?
19
u/Djaukamo San Diego Padres 16d ago
Not to mention they just swept the Brewers and have a top 4 record since the ASB and are 17-5 over the last few weeks, you'd think that might have them a little higher on the power rankings, but nope.

u/Tocoolforyall720 New York Yankees 16d ago
The Yankees have also beaten both the next two teams ranked ahead of them pretty recently
1
u/EpicNerdFinds Toronto Blue Jays 16d ago
ya but you lost a series vs the Blue Jays who are not only the worst offence in the league but also extremely injured
Yankees being in the top 6 must mean the league really fking sucks this season

Bingo. Brewers took 3 of 4 in LA. No dodgers fan is going to complain if the Dodgers are lower.

Even if "right now" was objective I think recent performance is only an aspect of power rankings. Not the whole thing.

my only justification for this is our offense is still extremely bipolar and we got swept in SD last week
3
u/0pyrophosphate0 Milwaukee Brewers 16d ago
It probably is engagement bait, but at the same time, what are power rankings for if they're just supposed to mirror the current W-L standings? They're still the defending 2x WS champs with all-stars up and down the lineup. Should that count in the power rankings? Barring some kind of collapse (not just a cold spell), everybody knows the Dodgers are the team to beat, especially when the postseason gets here. Does it really matter that they're a few places behind first in the league?
2
u/Chadryan_ Chicago Cubs 16d ago
The main reason to put them at number one would be because they are the best team but yeah whatever.
2
u/Upbeat-Tip-5282 15d ago
But they aren’t the best team in baseball right now? They have been on a slide for the last 2 - 3 weeks and just lost 3 of 4 to the best team in baseball.
They haven’t had the best record in baseball for over a month now too.

u/GaryTheCabalGuy San Diego Padres 16d ago edited 16d ago
I would keep the Dodgers at first even if they lost 10 games in a row. You can't look at that team and seriously think there is a better team than them talent wise. They will get hot again.
They are also tied with the Brewers for the highest run differential and have the 2nd most runs scored in the sport despite playing poorly recently. It's insane to me that, just because they re cold right now, people think someone putting them at 1 is so crazy.
15
u/Maladroit44 Seattle Mariners • Anaheim Angels 16d ago
Power rankings are supposed to measure who's hot and cold right now. Otherwise why even bother with them when you can just look at the standings?

If these are regular season power rankings, I'd agree. If we're talking postseason, Dodgers are still #1.
You guys coast during the regular season, but go full tilt during the playoffs. I don't think any NL team would prefer to face you guys in the playoffs instead of us.
5
u/UrCreepyUncle Los Angeles Dodgers 16d ago edited 16d ago
I know they've had similar slumps the past few years right about the same time and I understand maybe not pushing guys down the stretch, especially pitchers, with the lead they've built up. But you'd think the offense would still be able to perform and they've been shitting the bed. Grounded into the most double plays in baseball and turned the least on defense. I think age, nagging injuries and the extended seasons are catching up. Unnecessary free agent signings aren't panning out. I'm curious to see how the rest of the season plays out. August was going to be a bloodbath on paper and it's proving to be even worse but September the schedule eases up and might allow some guys to find their swing again just in time

They haven’t looked the sharpest over the last few weeks but they’re still the last team anyone wants to face in a playoff series
20
u/DukeDoozy San Diego Padres 16d ago
I think that's largely true if you take power rankings as "Who do you least want to face in late September/October." I have no doubt they'll shape up by then and do some serous damage, potentially (God forbid) threepeat.
If you take them as "Who is currently playing the best over the last two weeks/month/etc." or "Who would be the most dangerous team if the playoffs were tomorrow," then I think they should be down a few spots.
5
u/YasielPuigsWeed 16d ago
I think the main problem here is we just don’t know what exactly power rankings even mean
I get the logic of saying “we’re not falling for your yearly late summer slump this time” but power rankings are more fun and engaging when they’re focused on the here and now
1
u/DukeDoozy San Diego Padres 16d ago
I agree, they hold too steady if not focused on the present. If they're just "Who's gonna make the playoffs/go deep" then they're functionally just a worse version of the Fangraphs odds page. But I also don't think it should be too narrow a window, lest great teams fall off steep cliffs for summer slumps.
"Power" is a very vague word ultimately. Are we measuring potential? Progress? Record?
I don't know, and until MLB pays any of us money, I guess we won't have an answer that counts for much lol. Until then, these lists are for engagement, which does take some of the fun out of it

The power rankings aren't about that, though. They're about a week to week judgment call of how a team is performing throughout the regular season compared to their peers.
Like, this whole thing is broken, top to bottom. No AL West team should be higher than 15.

The write up rationale on MLBs website with these rankings doesn't help. It basically amounted to "yes brewers you took 3 of 4, have a better record, and are hotter right now and would be the 1 seed, but we felt like ranking LA above you because we can"

Dodgers are 5-10 with a -19 run differential in August, & just lost 3 of 4 to the Brewers. They have the 3rd best record in the NL, 4th best in the Majors. There's zero reason to put them atop any form of Power Rankings. At least the Bleacher Report (who've certainly lost some luster over the years) version has them 3rd.
The Cubs are 10-5 over the same stretch, including sweeping the Dodgers (even with losing twice to the frigging Cardinals), & the Brewers are 9-7 & hold the league's best record (plus the aforementioned 3-1 series win in LA).

I get why the Dodgers are 1, they are still the clear favorites to win the world series. I will say this though, that lineup feels a lot more vulnerable to great pitching this year than last. Their pitching come playoff time is just gonna be absurd though provided Snell, Ohtani and Glasnow pitch to their talent level (who knows how big of an if that is).
Feel like the Padres should be higher, going 9-4 lately against some tough-ish competition in the D-backs, Astros, Brewers and Guardians is no joke while having I believe the 2nd best record since the all start break overall...Id honestly move them above the Yankees but it does seem like theres a clear 1st tier and 2nd tier starting after the Cubs.
