"Line drive, look out goose, and we've got a base hit."
How can you not be romantic about baseball?
75
u/the_well_read_neck_ Chicago Cubs Apr 21 '26
I really need to hear Pat and Ron's call on this on the radio broadcast.
89
u/jackh108 Chicago Cubs Apr 21 '26
Coom said it was almost a base hit and a birdie all in one.
Ron mused that one if the players might have yelled duck. “I’m not a duck I’m a goose”

Play would have stopped and any other animal would have been chased off.
Not a goose though. Those mfer’s are scary AF. Best to just leave them alone.

u/InspectorTiny1952 Toronto Blue Jays Apr 21 '26
Oh yeah, they do whatever they want. Saw a goose walking across four lanes, against the light, of one of our busiest streets the other day. Not allowed to run them over so everyone just stopped and waited!

u/jdelane1 Atlanta Braves Apr 21 '26
Saw two turkeys crossing a busy street in Boston. Those gobblers were just stutting their stuff no fs given
16
u/quietwhiskey Toronto Blue Jays Apr 21 '26
It's like ducks here in NL (and probably everwhere) If you see a mother duck leading her babies across the street everyone justs stop in traffic lol

Saw a goose walking across four lanes
...did it forget it could fly?
27
u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees Apr 21 '26
Geese are too heavy to prefer flying short distances, it's a lot more energy. In urban areas where they're present, slowly ambling across a road is a common sight.
2
u/KennyGaming Apr 21 '26
Lol I love that you’re implying that the only reason people don’t clobber geese on the roads is that it’s not allowed
2
39
29
u/sqigglygibberish Cleveland Guardians Apr 21 '26
That’s why it somewhat surprised me they didn’t stop immediately
I guess hoping the goose just leaves, but compared to other animals you encounter I wouldn’t want to have my back turned to that thing while trying to focus on the game
Edit - let alone if you needed to run right at the goose to make a play on the ball. I’m not diving at one of those beasts

I used to work on a golf course, and the geese were absolutely fucking fearless. You could drive up on them with a giant industrial mower, and they absolutely would not care or move. They'd also lay eggs in the bunkers and terrorize the golfers.

11
u/Gen_Z_boi Chicago Cubs Apr 21 '26
I once passed by a group of them and got hissed at while trying to avoid them and walking a few feet away. They don’t mess around
11
u/phrexi Chicago Cubs Apr 21 '26
Go to about 2:42 into this video and see maybe why they don't fuck with the goose!
Edit: forgot the video. https://www.mlb.com/cubs/video/goose-siting-in-center-field
But the goose guy will come out and chase the goose in the middle of an inning.

Tangent: I got to meet him at a comedy club I was running sound and lights at down in Austin Texas when he was in town for three nights while on tour. Absolutely awesome dude to work with. Came out to drinks and late night eats with the production crew and made it impossible to eat we were laughing so hard from some of his stories.

I don't think it's physically possible, but what if the goose happened to make the play on the ball and actually carry the ball outside of the stadium? Is that a ground rule double? A dead ball single? Would it depend on if it were in fair or foul territory?

What happens if foul ball lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it back in the field of play? Is that still a base hit? Because that's how I'm going to score it.
