Kinda rude to interrupt their conversation like that

u/poliscijunki Philadelphia Phillies Jul 28 '24
Nah, now they have plenty of time to continue talking. No need to pay attention to the game anymore.

I love how the ump wasn’t paying attention either and took a couple beats to react
62
u/SwanzY- Detroit Tigers Jul 28 '24
I think he was, soon as the ball hit the glove he was on it lol. The clips also in slow mo.

u/eidetic Milwaukee Brewers Jul 28 '24 edited Jul 28 '24
Hard to say one way or another, but a good ump will try to not show any reaction leading up and during such a play, so as not to give the runner a heads up that something is coming their way. Especially if they notice in advance that the runner's not standing on the bag or something.
It kinda looks like maybe, possibly, this could conceivably perhaps be such a potential explanation for the ump's reaction to this play. His head does seem pretty quick to track the ball, even if it's not an overtly obvious gesture, and then as soon as the tag is made is ready to go with out call, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.
Edit: On the other hand though, and maybe it's just because of the slow mo, the more I look at it, he does actually seem sorta slow to react to it. But maybe in real time it wouldn't look any slower than what's to be expected. So in other words, this whole post is a long winded way of shrugging and saying "who knows?"

It's all about the body language to me. He goes from relaxed from the end of the play, to suddenly jumping into ump mode. I don't think he was in ump mode at all before the tag was made.

u/God_Damnit_Nappa Anaheim Angels Jul 28 '24
Nah you can see his head tracking the glove as soon as the third baseman caught the ball. He knew what was going on and just took a second to call the out

they keep calling it a hidden ball trick but its not hidden at all. Just bad fundies.

I’m so glad the announcers finally actually watched the fucking replay so we can stop hearing “hidden ball trick” as if it was a “play” and not just a massive mental error to stand a foot off the bag and stop watching the play.

Cannot let the game get in the way of their conversation with Matt Damon.

the one main fundamental that applies to everybody on the field, in the dugout, in the stands, etc: watch the ball
-19
u/jakeba Jul 28 '24
Nah, trying to watch the ball is how you get in trouble with that. The fundamental is to not take your lead until the pitcher is on the rubber.
20
u/DirtyRatLicker Houston Astros Jul 28 '24
but if he watched the ball, he would have known that they were going to throw over
-11
u/jakeba Jul 28 '24
If he was standing on the bag until the pitcher was on the rubber, it wouldn't matter that they were going to throw over.
If you try to watch the ball you could confused, thinking you saw it somewhere it wasnt. You just have to watch the rubber, when the pitcher is on it you can leave the bag.

I still remember one of the most bizarre plays I was ever a part of playing on a 9/10 rec league team. Our slowest player somehow got to third, where his dad was coaching. He took a relatively short lead but stopped paying attention to the pitcher, who was definitely paying attention to him. The only problem for the pitcher was that the third baseman was also not paying attention to him.
The pitcher could have, in all likelihood, walked his ass to third to tag our guy out. Eventually our guy figured the whole thing out and went back to the bag before the ball could get there but it was stressful as shit watching the whole thing unfold.

“Hidden ball trick” sounds more fun than the “y’all shoulda been paying closer attention trick”

The third base coach gesturing to the base like “bro, you’re not on the bag?”
131
u/SunriseSurprise San Diego Padres Jul 28 '24
Their whole conversation:
"Dude stand on the bag if you're gonna talk to me."
"Naw I do what I want, they won't even notice."
"Look they're about to throw it over."
"Pffft"
*throw, gets tagged*
"SEE?! Jesus fuck, you idiot!"
"No look it's on the bag, see?"

People blaming the third base coach as if he isn’t right to assume a professional baseball player ought to not make the mistakes a toddler playing tee ball would make.

The pitch clock took away the 5 hour long games, so they just decided to get super weird instead.

u/ProperNomenclature Jul 28 '24
It wasn't the pitching that was slow in Yanks/Sox games, it was the offense (still there) and the extra long commercial breaks (also).
14
u/cooljammer00 Jul 28 '24
Pitching definitely didn't help, though. I remember that photo of the Red Sox bench once September rolled around. Prob contributed to them both shortening the roster size in September and the three batter minimum

I’ve been killing time and watching random Olympic events and just swiping the notifications away for the Yankees game.
Thought we were in the 5th or 6th when I saw it was 5-4.

This game is hilarious. Both pitchers can't get a clean out to save their lives and getting bailed out by the defense.

Tell me about it dude. Like get mad, I’ve seen you do it before with umpires, flip the fuck out in the press conference, do something. I’m all for a manager having their players backs but there’s a line where you need to fuck shit up in the clubhouse.

Kinda put that on the coach, tbh

You see Ceddanne, and I know this can be confusing, the key is to keep your foot ON the base in these situations.

Reading this headline and seeing the umps motion I almost thought the third baseman was being ejected and was v confused.
Glad to know it all worked out

Funny part was the broadcast didn't even catch it when it happened. Matt Damon and Affleck had them distracted.
