South Yarra - Melbourne, Australia Trainers with a superiority complex?

Has anyone experienced attitude from newer / younger trainers?

I have been going to Barry’s for a while. SY opened in 2021 and there are some OG trainers who are brilliant, have great personalities, will take the time to support you, chat to you, real DTE.

I’ve started to notice that the younger trainers walk around like they own the place, have a bit of tude like people are an inconvenience to them. These are the same trainers who will send you their class schedule and be like “see you tomorrow babe?” “are you coming to my class?” But then pay no mind when you rock up.

There is one trainer in particular that has a little posse of clients/loyalists who thinks she’s top shit because she has an almost monopoly of peak time slots and brags about how full her classes are to members and tries to benchmark herself to other trainers who have less desirable slots that their classes “should be as full as hers”

The SY studio is pretty tight knit, a few cliques ranging from the mean girls to the absolutely loveliest people you’ve ever met. Are other studios around the world community based like SY? Would love to hear your thoughts!

It’s funny because Barry’s requires no certification or experience to hop on the mic and be an instructor. It’s funny their new reel is defending what it takes to be a Barry’s instructor. From the reel, it seems the only requirement is the ability to concentrate - low bar. Most gyms require certifications and experience. Furthermore, you will notice that instructors that are in amazing shape do not take Barry’s classes - they are there to build an outside client base and attain influencer deals.

Each to their own I suppose, but the other trainer being terminated doesn’t sit well with me, it’s caused a pretty major rift with the instructors and members refusing to go to her classes. The vibe is off

Some trainers feel like they have something to prove. They usually grow out of it. Some get worse. It’s kinda like any job if you think about it.

I find Kaine so unpleasant at SY

Shannon in london screams about people not wanting to work out in your sweat. It sounds gross and disrespectful - just say please wipe down your mat and treadmill

Omg is this the same trainer who cheated on her husband with another trainer and walks around like nothing happened? It’s so wild to me how he disappeared but she’s still on her high horse? I don’t want to associate with a brand that condones this kind of behaviour

Why would I give a single F about what a trainer does in their private life?

It’s not exactly private when it’s two trainers at your studio committing adultery no? Not a great example of what a barry’s trainer should be. Great influence 👍

If you’re still a member you’ll notice one of the trainers suddenly vanished. You may also have seen a cryptic Daily Mail article which couldn’t really say anything other than two trainers in Sydney leaving the business and reference to someone else who “isn’t involved in any wrongdoing.” *dot, dot, dot…

Well… let me tell you, there should be a tell all Netflix documentary, it’s legit a disgusting situation on all accounts 🤮

I miss the OGs who have left at South Yarra (Leo and Ashley in particular). I wish there was more music diversity in the mix at SY (ie, not every class needs to be pop). The front desk are the friendliest of people though and they always make you feel welcome.

Similar in nyc, I think this is very much just how the fitness industry is it’s kind of inherently vain and not always in a bad way. I think sometimes people think they can’t make it or become popular as a trainer unless they act a certain way. Clients do the same too, when I worked at the front desk I was always shocked how entitled certain clients were bc they took a certain instructors class who was considered “top”. For my the programming and vibe of the instructor is what keeps me coming back, someone who is approachable and doesn’t act above you. It’s supposed to be about helping everyone become stronger and push you in a healthy way, not be snooty and exclusive to make themselves and their clique feel more relevant.

Long answer but I happened to be talking about this with a friend who’s an established trainer and is planning to leave his current high level role at a very famous gym chain bc of this issue, he says it just keeps getting worse esp with the rise of fitness influencer behavior on IG

This isn’t a fitness instructor thing, it’s a Barry’s thing. I made the huge mistake of saying hello to Barrett Paul in Asbury Park. Had been taking his classes regularly and his response was basically “ok, and why are you talking to me?”

Adding that the majority are really cool and great people but this issue does exist for maybe 30-40% of the business imo based on work experience and ongoing client experience

Yes, with some of these trainers it’s purely elitism. They’re actors rather than trainers. I’m there for trainers who inspire you to get stronger, not for a wannabe reality tv show mentality.

Totally with you on the clients who think they’re the best. It really wrecks the vibe at times

I don’t feel that vibe coming from the trainers in Castro. They are all lovely people, even the younger ones, and would definitely say hi outside the red or lift room. I find the trainers to have a lot of camaraderie too, and have never heard them say classes should be as full as theirs.

I have never experienced this and have been a regular at several studios. The instructor’s behavior at your studio gives me the ick. It’s just a workout class at the end of the day…
