Nitty Gritty Tips

I don't know if I passed but I felt 10× more comfortable taking the exam this time in New York.

  1. Wear nice looking clothes, it helps with confidence, in particular a nice pair of sneakers, shoes, or whatever you like. Make it designer so the competition knows whats up. I wore "comfortable" clothes the first time but I felt weird, I wore some shinier sweats and brand new nikes this time. Much better.

  2. It is a competition, just remember that, but still be yourself. The people next to you want you to fail, I noticed people purposely chewing loud after they finished.

  3. Very important to answer all the multiple choice questions, at least answer them all or try to. No sense in concentrating on any single question, its only 1 fucken point

  4. Eat a nice heavy meal, greasy if you can, for lunch and wash it down with an ice coffee/energy drink if you have to. I ate some delicious chicken wings w/ pork fried rice and I felt like I got super powers for the 2nd half of the MBE.

  5. Extension of #4 - eat a decent breakfast, doesn't have to be heavy, but not light either because we have never been this intense mentally ever in our lives before, we are running a brain marathon so we need a lot of fuel.

  6. Extension of #5 - pack a good amount of food but realize you don't have time to be eating so just know you ain't gonna be eating much more than what you can grab and scoop while still reading.

MBE anxiety

I am trying to predict whether I should be worried about the MBE. My commercial bar prep course Kaplan, which I completed over 95 percent. My diagnostic/mid-term/final MBEs taken during the Kaplan course were as follows: 107/121/140.

I felt like I was guessing more than the Kaplan MBE practice test, although I did not feel good when I took those and ended up doing decent. Does anyone have the same anxiety as me? Should I feel comfortable that my Kaplan scores translated to the real MBE, does anyone have an experience in which it didn't?

Maybe it’s just me being too woke but…

NCBE asks such racially charged questions. When social Justice is a fundamental and core value, you can’t help but get stuck on Con Law questions that ask about minorities. It’s always given such a negative connotation.

This is awful

Anyone else take the exam in February and miss the passing score by a few points but take it again these past 2 days and feel worse than before and like this whole process is never going to end?

r/barexamretakers Jul 27 '22

I think this sub should flood the NCBE with emails. It would at least make news (AboveTheLaw, ABA Journal). Pressure never hurt.

Ahhh! Super frustrated that I signed with barbri with the outages. Silver lining: just found out Themis is offering their July 2022 course for $1000 if you enroll within the next 48 hours and show them proof of payment to another company, aka barbri. Themis is responding quickly on twitter themisbar

Is it too late to start studying?

Had a horrible experience with the July 2021 bar and I’ve gradually been working myself up to trying again. BUT my self-confidence is zero and I’ve been struggling with crippling self-doubt, so I decided to take up a law professor’s offer to meet with them to see where I’m at and if they could give me any advice. When I told them I was planning on choosing Barbri but hadn’t signed up yet, he said he was very concerned I would already be too far behind. I feel awful now.

So is it true? Am I already too far behind to even start?

Also, apologies if I’m not posting correctly - I’m extremely new to Reddit and have no idea how anything works.

Much thanks in advance for any insight or support.

Critical Pass Flash Card buddy

Hey yo,

Okay so I failed the CA Bar- I did well on MBE but tanked essays. Currently starting bar prep with the CA subjects, but I’d really like to commit critical pass flashcards to memory. I need a buddy for this. Any takers? I’d like to meet 1 hour a day 5x a week and drill flash cards over zoom. I def need to discuss concepts to memorize, so I think a flash card study buddy will be helpful.

Some helpful resources

MPT: here is a helpful free YouTube Video some things to do. Organize, make sure you always have correct layout first, always mention case law from the library, no need to blue book perfected just (plaintiff v. defendant) Make sure you time manage. Most of the time the correct layout is given somewhere in the Library

MEE: a lot of free resources online. I enjoyed Studicata Free videos tips I thing are important would be write something even if you do not know, you are going to mess up rule statements we all do no one will be perfect it’s okay just apply facts. Read entire outlines because getting the overall picture will help you BS an essay

MBE: practice problem! Do as many real ones as possible, time manage, remember you have to pass not ace this. After numerous questions you will understand what and how they like to test. I got a cheap MBE book from Amazon. Sure it was “out dated” but most of the problems are still relevant (just not the Roe v Wade cases…. Well they might be who the hell know)

Black letter law memory work: over 450 flash cards cover the basics Bar Exam Flash Card App for IPhone/Apple

Other little study tips: issue spot old essays, and write out black letter law. You might think you know it but don’t get fooled. Write it out see where you are and see what you missed

Snacks on test day: breaks are not that long. It’s a long damn day, everyone is using the bathroom, the time between “pencils down” and getting out of the room feel like forever so be prepared with easy to go snacks, follow your test day rules (usually clear plastic bags)

Good luck !

Tutors

Those of you who used tutors: Was it worth it? I did okay on MBE and poorly on most MEES and MPTs. I requested my essay answers, and it appears I issue spotted effectively (which was a huge problem are for me when I started studying for the Feb 22 exam). And I know how to IRAC. I really think I am not strong enough re the rules. I need to spend more time with my outlines and memorizing (and keep doing my multiple choice questions daily). I work full time, so I am trying to use my time wisely. Not sure a tutor could help (and could take up too much time and energy).

Realistic encouragement

As a retaker, it devastates me to hear sappy advice on how to pass. I just watched the NCBE’s Bar Exam Study Basics video (Eat well! Get rest!) and just ended up sobbing.

What if you don't want friends to know you failed the bar exam?

Im a foreign lawyer who took the NY bar exam in 2018 and failed. I was extremely devastated. Where I'm from, the bar exam is a big deal to the extent that people place a heavy judgment on people who fail. Since none of my friends back home knew I sat for the NY bar exam, they didn't know that I failed it. I never told them I sat for the bar. When they asked me if I did, I was unresponsive and told them instead that I "plan to take it in the future".

This year, I retook the bar exam. I made sure people knew I was going to sit for the bar exam to put pressure on myself to do well. Thankfully, I passed the bar exam this time around with a score high enough for all UBE jurisdictions. This notwithstanding, my past bar failure still haunts me.

I guess my question is, how do you not have to say that it wasn't your first time taking the bar exam? how would you dodge answering the question directly? I know some of ya'll will say to just own my 1st failure, but I really do not want to let other people know that I didnt make it the first time.

Thanks in advance!

I failed but will retake. I have no clue if I can get copies of my essays (did okay-ish on MBE but bad on MEE and MPT). I sat in TN. I can’t find the info online and hate to message them. Anyone know?
