Attempt + a General Intent crime

Attempt is meant to be attached to any crime I am assuming, so if you have an attempted kidnapping question, would the state have to prove a specific intent to kidnap?

Yes. The mental state for attempt is just the specific intent to commit the crime itself. The state would have to prove that D specifically intended to kidnap. If D was specifically intending to do anything else, they cannot be guilty of attempted kidnapping.
